Timely Debate on Diasporan Unity
http://www.keghart.com/Editorial_TimelyDebate
The hotly-debated topic of Diaspora unity has been the mainstay of Armenian public discourse over the past five decades, if not longer. To cite one example, a serious attempt to form a unified body was made in 1979 when about 300 intellectuals and activists met in Paris. In subsequent years the group held two similar successful gatherings in Lausanne and in Sevres. The fervour, however, abated over time. The Diaspora unity issue resurfaced with renewed zeal following the publication of the infamous Protocols between Armenia and Turkey.

Now Nikol Pashinyan, editor-in-chief of Haykakan Zhamanak (Armenian Times) daily in Armenia is imprisoned because of his political views. We, Armenians living in the Diaspora and our non-Armenian friends, are deeply concerned in the imprisonment of Nikol Pashinyan, editor-in-chief of Haykakan Zhamanak ("Armenian Time") daily in Armenia, and his treatment in jail. While Mr. Pashinyan's voluntary surrender to law enforcement agencies should have been duly noted by the Armenian authorities, the veteran journalist has experienced coercion while behind bars. We attest that these reprehensible acts of the authorities--aimed at silencing Mr. Pashinyan and punishing him for his political views--will have the opposite outcome, making the editor's voice heard more forcefully in Armenia and in the Diaspora. Deeply concerned with the treatment of the journalist, we are following the "judicial process" with vigilance, hoping that he will be released soon. Meanwhile, we demand that the Armenian authorities put an end to the unlawful acts against him and ensure his security.

Program to Benefit Water Projects in Artsakh
Los Angeles, CA – Raising funds for drinking water and irrigation projects in Artsakh, Armenia Fund’s “Water is Life” International Thanksgiving Day Telethon will air live from Hollywood today, from 8am to 8pm PST coast-to-coast and around the world. Airing for 12 hours, Telethon 2010 will reach every continent, entering Armenian homes through satellite, cable and the internet.
The Telethon will bring together Armenians from all walks of life regardless of their political or religious views and affiliations around one purpose: to bring life to Artsakh villages by giving them round-the-clock access to clean drinking and irrigation water.
The shortage of water is a serious problem in Artsakh affecting more than 70,000 people living in 200 villages. On average, each family spends 40% of their daily lives carrying water from a source 2-5 miles away. That water is not always clean - 88% of all diseases are related to tainted drinking water.
Today, more than 100,000 acres of agricultural lands are dry due to the lack of irrigation water and people in the villages are unable to grow crops and have incomes. Water is a serious economic engine and the driving force behind agriculture. Armenia Fund’s pilot projects in the Tavush region of Armenia have proven that every $1 invested in improved water access yields an average of $12 in economic returns.
In the United States alone the potential audience for the Telethon is around 55 million households in the states of Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington.
In Southern California, the Telethon can be viewed on KSCI Channel 18, KVMD, ARTN/Shant and USArmenia networks for full 12 hours. In the Glendale/Burbank/Pasadena/La Canada areas in addition to ARTN/Shant (388) and USArmenia (386), the Telethon broadcast will also be shown on AABC (384), HighVision (381) and Horizon Armenian TV (385) channels. The live 12 hour webcast can be viewed at www.ArmeniaFund.org
In Armenia, the Telethon can be viewed for full 12 hours on H1, Armenia, Shant and Yerkir Media networks beginning 20:00.
The General Sponsor of Telethon 2010 is VivaCell MTS and the Los Angeles Major Partner is Karoun Dairies USA.

INCUMBENT ARMENIAN MP VARTKES MAHDESSIAN ANNOUNCES HIS CANDIDACY FOR 22 MAY 2011 ELECTIONS
Gibrahayer e-magazine - At the opening of the new premises of the Larnaca Armenian Club on Saturday 6 November, Armenian incumbent MP Vartkes Mahdessian announced his candidacy for the seat of the Armenian MP in the Cyprus Parliament for the upcoming 2011 May elections. In an announcement that circulated last week, Vartkes Mahdessian declared that during the past five years he had worked closely with community organisations and individuals, ensuring the unity and progress of our community and had tried to assist everyone who had brought their problem to his attention. He added that he believed he had kept his pre-election promise - on which he based his campaign - and had worked with enthusiasm, a concrete work-plan, transparency, reconciliation and meritocracy, and based on the support of the majority of the community, he had decided to run again for the position of the Armenian MP.

"We want our land back" | ||
90 years since President Wilson defined boundaries between Armenia and Turkey
By Veronica Rocha - November 22, 2010 - DOWNTOWN - A ceremony in honor of the 90th anniversary of President Woodrow Wilson's Arbitral Award, which established a Turkish-Armenian boundary, attracted hundreds of people Sunday night in support of a sovereign Armenia. Ninety years after Wilson defined a boundary for the two countries, Greg Krikorian, president of the Glendale Unified school board, told audience members that Turkey has continued to deny Armenians rights to their land. "We want our land back," he said. "It's our land that they stole from us." Wilson's actions gave Armenians hope, which Krikorian said must be passed on to younger generations. "Each of us came here for hope," he said. "Each of us came here for a piece of our lives that was stolen." After the downfall of the Ottoman Empire following World War I, Wilson drew a map of the Armenian territories as part of a Nov. 22, 1920, peace treaty. The Western Armenian territories included 40,000 square miles, according to the Glendale-based Western Armenian Heritage Foundation, which hosted the event. But Turkey claimed some of the territory by force, said the organization's president, Michael Sosikian. The territory then became part of the country in a treaty signed in 1923. Armenians view the Arbitral Award as a stamp of approval from the United States, he said. "It means the United States of America obliged to obey international law from their president; then we will see what Turkey says," Sosikian said. Having support from Reps. Brad Sherman and Judy Chu, who was scheduled to speak at the ceremony, is a sign that some U.S. officials are trying to work toward a resolution, he said. In the past two weeks, USC and UCLA held symposiums on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, and the trend is moving toward full reparation, said Wilson's great-great-grandson, Donald Wilson Bush, president of the Woodrow Wilson Legacy Foundation.

“Constructive Ambiguity” Anyone?
http://www.keghart.com/Editorial_ConstructiveAmbiguity
In addition to throwing the monkey wrench into the fabrications of Turkish fabulists and “historians” who claim Turks are indigenous to Anatolia, Davutoğlu's statement and visit were typical of other senior Turkish officials in recent months. Together with President Abdullah Gül and Prime Minister Reccep Erdoğan , Davutoğlu pops up regularly in various capitals these days, sort of “If it’s Tuesday, this must be the day Gül-Erdoğan-Davutoğlu come to inspect the honour guard in some capital…Baghdad, Brasilia, Moscow, Tehran, London, Damascus, Baku, Sofia…”
The Three Musketeers of Ankara are all over the map, making brave statements about Turkey being the bridge between the East and the West, between the North and the South, Turkey straddling the crossroads of the East and West divide, Turkey spanning Christian Europe and Moslem Middle East, Turkey the intermediary between the U.S and Iran… On and go the quotidian drumbeat.
