Barnabus Fund partners with a compassionate doctor
In a land that has been impacted by war - whether nearby or on its own territory - for 14 year, Dr Jany Haddad has spearheaded visionary work among the people of Aleppo, particularly the Christian community. He has used his medical expertise as a surgeon, his God-given energy and courage, and his ability to organise and inspire others to establish ten ministries to help the weakest and most vulnerable in the name of Christ.
Dr Jany was born in I1954 in Iran of Armenian parents. His father's forbears had fled one of the earliest Ottoman attacks on Christians and moved to Aleppo in the 1860s: his mother's family fled in 1915 when the Armenian genocide was at its height. Raised in Kuwait, he moved to Aleppo in 1990, having studied medicine at Damascus and Glasgow, specialising in Oncology.
In 2006, Dr Jany founded the Armenian Christian Medical Association (ACMS) which Barnabus Fund has supported. He continues to lead ACMA's medical mission teams on their visits tp the poorest and neediest places where his indefatigable energy enables him to perform so many surgical procedures each day that he keeps two complete operating theatres running simultaneously and never takes a break until he finishes late at night. He was awarded the Republic of Armenia Gold medal 'for services provided to the homeland' at Armenia's 25th anniversary of independence in September 2016, as well as a gold medal from the prime minister of Nagorno Karabagh.

Karabakh Reports Fresh Azeri Shelling
February 07, 2017
Nagorno-Karabakh's Armenian-backed armed forces accused Azerbaijan
late on Tuesday of refusing to let OSCE representatives monitor the
ceasefire regime around Karabakh and shelling its frontline positions
afterwards.
The Defense Army said the Azerbaijani side fired 46 rounds from
mortars and light cannons at its troops deployed just east and north
of the Armenian-populated territory. It said it suffered no
casualties.
"If such provocations continue, the Defense Army of the
Nagorno-Karabakh Republic reserves the right to take disproportionate
actions," it warned in a statement.
The statement claimed that the shelling began at 5 p.m. shortly after
the Azerbaijani military refused to allow OSCE field representatives
to approach a section of the Karabakh "line of contact" and conduct
regular monitoring there from the Azerbaijani side.
Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to the
claims.
Earlier in the day, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev bestowed a
posthumous title of "national hero" on an Azerbaijani soldier who was
shot dead on the Armenian border in late December. According to news
reports, Aliyev said the soldier, Chingiz Qurbanov, was awarded for
defending Azerbaijan's territorial integrity.
The award was announced the day after Armenia handed over Qurbanov's
body to Azerbaijan. The handover was facilitated by the International
Committee of the Red Cross.
Qurbanov as well as three Armenian soldiers were killed in what the
Armenian military insists was an Azerbaijani incursion into Armenia's
northern Tavush province bordering western Azerbaijan. Officials in
Yerevan say the fact that the Azerbaijani serviceman's body was left
lying in Armenian territory proves that the border post was attacked
by Azerbaijani troops.
Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry has denied launching an incursion in the
mountainous area.

Russian blogger Lapshin extradited to Baku
February 7
Russian citizen Alexander Lapshin was
extradited to Baku from Minsk, the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General’s
Office said Tuesday.
"Lapshin was taken to a detention facility of the State Security
Service," Azerbaijani prosecutors said.
A special flight with the blogger on board landed in the international
airport of Baku at about 22:00 Moscow time, hours after the Supreme
Court of Belarus upheld a lower court ruling to extradite him. In the
airport, the Russian passport holder was handed over to officers of
Azerbaijan’s State Security Service.
Lapshin, also a citizen of Israel, was detained in Minsk. He was put
on an international wanted list at Azerbaijan’s request after visiting
the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region without permission from the
Azerbaijani authorities.
Azerbaijani prosecutors launched a criminal case into "repeated public
anti-state calls" and "illegal crossing of Azerbaijan’s state border,"
punishable with a prison term of five to eight years.
The Belarusian Prosecutor General’s Office decided to extradite
Lapshin on January 17. On January 26, the Minsk City Court upheld the
decision.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier said Moscow opposes
extradition of Russians to a third country and attempts to make trips
by journalists or individuals to certain territories a criminal
offense.

Francois Hollande attends annual dinner with Armenians of France
09 Feb 2017
French President Francois Hollande had an annual dinner with the Coordinating Council of the Armenian Organizations of France (CCAF).
In his last dinner with CCAF in the capacity of the President of France, Francois Hollande referred to the decision of the Constitutional Council to revoke certain amendments to the Equality and Citizenship Act, including those related to the criminalization of genocide denial, Nouvelles d’Armenie reports.
“To deny the massacres of yesterday is to authorize the massacres of today,” Hollande said. “I welcome the quality of the work of Jean-Paul Costa, which was the basis for an amendment during the debate on the Equality and Citizenship Act,” said Francois Hollande, and stressed that “it is necessary to continue to act.” He described it as “a fight for truth, not for a cause.”
He then announced that a mission was launched last October by education minister Najat Vallaud-Belkacem and chaired by Vincent Duclert to look for measures to “institute a day of National commemoration of all genocides, war crimes and thus the Armenian genocide.”
Francois Hollande said Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan will visit Paris next month. “2017 marks the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Armenia. I invited President Sargsyan to pay an official visit to Paris. It will take place on March 8, Women’s Day. It will provide an opportunity to discuss economic, cultural and academic co-operation, to hold discussions on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, because France has a special responsibility.”
Lastly, he stressed the contribution of the French Armenians to the Republic. “We are here to talk about the best of France. Because you are the best of France,” he told Armenians.
“Even beyond the month of May, I will always be at your side, as I have always been. I will not have the same responsibility, but I will have the same conviction,” Francois Hollande concluded.

Henrikh's out to make his own United history
by ANTHONY JEPSON
HENRIKH Mkhitaryan knows his United dream will be 'over quickly' if he
does not perform.
And the Armenian has revealed he studied Mancunian history to make
himself at home in the city as he bids to prove himself.
Mkhitaryan has become a key part of manager Jose Mourinho's team after
a slow start to life at Old Trafford following his £26m move from
Borussia Dortmund.
And after grabbing a starting spot - he has been ever-present in the
Premier League in 2017 - the forward is determined to keep it.
"Manchester United are not just any football club," he said. "A part
of the association with this club means to be part of a great story.
I have read history of wanted to people Henrikh "That also means when
you play for United you must always be ready, always try to get the
best from yourself.
"If you keep trying to do this and produce the performance, then you
always get a chance. But if you do not, then you are out quickly.
"I did not want to later look back in my life and say, 'Why would you
not make times change?' here live Mkhitaryan "I do not want to miss a
thing. Life is too short, too short to pass this opportunity up."
Mkhitaryan, 28, says he learned about Manchester before his arrival
from Germany.
"You have to be prepared," he added. "So I have prepared myself. I
read about the history of England, of Manchester. I wanted to know how
people here live, their interests.
"I also analysed English football.
The important thing was you have to be mentally ready."
Mkhitaryan, meanwhile, has hit back at Borussia Dortmund fans who
claim he only moved to United for the money.
The Armenian moved to Old Trafford in the summer after three years in
the Bundesliga.
But he has dismissed criticism from some Dortmund supporters who
insist his decision to leave the club was only motivated by money.
He said: "I can not understand that, and that's wrong.
"If it were just about money, I would have transferred from Shakhtar
Donetsk to Anzhi Makhachkala and not to Borussia Dortmund.
"But I did not want that. I wanted to develop further."
Bastian Schweinsteiger is another who has come in from the cold under
Mourinho and Mkhitaryan is glad to have the former Germany captain
back in the squad.
He added: "I'm glad he got another chance. He knows exactly what needs
to be done on the pitch.
"I can only report positively about him, because he has a great character."
