Basket Case: Store Director Gulezian Discusses Market Basket Saga
Special for the Armenian Weekly
Manchester, N.H. (A.W.)—As the conflict between Market Basket’s employees and Board of Directors surrounding the firing of CEO Arthur T. Demoulas enters its third month, the Armenian Weekly sought an inside perspective on the standoff that has made the news as far away as New Zealand. Peter Gulezian, the store director of Market Basket’s Manchester location, has been with the company since August of 1983 when he began as a part-time employee. Gulezian went on to work his way up through various positions in the organization in a number of the company’s 71 locations and has been a store director for the last 16 years.

An Appeal for Armenian Involvement in NOW, ‘Women in Black’
Twice I have participated in women’s conferences, and both times I realized that I was the only Armenian there. More than 400 women recently participated in the conference organized by the National Organization for Women (NOW) from July 27 -29. Seven years earlier, I had gone to Valencia, Spain, to be a part of the “Women in Black” peace conference.
The participants at the NOW conference included delegates, board members, and some men who gathered to discuss national issues related to women. NOW is a grassroots organization that was founded in 1966 to provide equal rights for women. Today, the Equal Rights Amendment has yet to be passed. Men get higher salaries for performing the same duties at many jobs. NOW is a multi-issue, multi-strategy organization that takes a holistic approach to women’s rights.
Armenian women living in the U.S. are subject to the same issues and concerns as local women. We have to deal with discrimination, domestic violence, equal rights, and...

Dispatches from Camp Javakhk

Reflections from the First Day of Camp Javakhk

By U. Haigan Tcholakian, Counselor, Camp Javakhk Akhalkalak
Mornings in Akhalkalak are nothing short of incredible. Everyone should be so lucky as to wake up to a mountain topped with lush, green trees and to be fed banir, hatz, havgit, mees, and tea by a lively Russian woman who hardly speaks Armenian or English (and who you primarily communicate with through hand gestures and sounds).
It is hard to put into words what I felt as the Camp Javakhk group walked to the Gentron (center) to meet the children of Akhalkalak on our first day of camp. The mixed emotions of excitement and anxiousness vanished as we stepped into the Gentron and were greeted by 75 big blue and green eyes (apparently blue and green eyes are prevalent in Akhalkalak). Any hardships experienced throughout the year, while planning for camp and making sure we were ready, seemed moot as soon as the Jampar commenced.

The Library of Congress: Where American and Armenian History Come Alive
By Tamar Anna Alexanian
When I was applying for the Leo Sarkisian Internship back in February, the blurb at the top of the application said the following: “During the eight-week Washington, D.C. program, interns live at the ANCA Hovig Saghdejian Capital Gateway House, located a short distance from the ANCA National Headquarters. The participants work on a wide variety of projects based on their individual interests, while gaining hands-on experience within the American political system. A bi-weekly lecture series features guest lecturers including Members of Congress, ambassadors, and Armenian-American leaders.”
The ANCA Leo Sarkisian Interns with Dr. Levon Avdoyan, the Armenian and Georgian area specialist at the Library of Congress.

It was this last part—the bi-weekly lecture series—that I was most excited about. Ever since my first AYF-YOARF Junior Seminar 10 years ago, I have walked into lectures armed with pencil and paper. I have been, and still continue to be, inspired...

Hamazkayin Hosts Region-Wide Armenian Knowledge Bowl through Social Media
Members of the Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Organization USA – Eastern Region this year established the “Inaugural Knowledge Bowl competition” (HAKB) to promote Armenian knowledge across its chapters in a friendly, fun but competitive atmosphere, akin to a sports competition, but with no aching joints. Hamazkayin’s “Olympics” was successful insofar as the “best” from each city eventually met to claim victory within an organized regional tournament.

Executive members and liaisons from the Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Providence New Jersey, New York, and Washington, D.C. Hamazkayin chapters were asked to spread the word and prepare their communities. Thanks to their hard work, diligence, footwork, and inherent interest in “game show”-like knowledge competitions, the Hamazkayin chapters participated with strong interest.

‘Brand Armenia’: Promoting Armenia’s Image in the 21st Century
By Vasken Kalayjian
The Republic of Armenia, and by extension its worldwide diaspora, is at an exciting crossroads. What road it will take in the coming critical years depends largely on Armenia’s ability to grow its economy. Tourism and foreign investment are important factors in reaching this key goal.
Unlike other nations pursuing similar objectives, Armenia has been late to the party in terms of actively marketing its brand assets in today’s competitive global economy. However, thanks to a groundbreaking initiative, recently launched by the Armenian government, this is about to change.
The Armenian National Competitiveness Foundation, working in close cooperation with the Embassy of the United States in Armenia, has been tasked by Armenia’s government to market Armenia under the assignment’s banner, “Brand Armenia.”
Brand Armenia is driven by original research that explores the ways and means to properly showcase Armenia and its people on the world stage. It begins...
