At the end of the 19
th century August Ponsot discovered that Armenians households burned styrax as a fragrant disinfectant. With the help of pharmacist Henri Rivier developed (1880s) a chemical process whereby the benzoin resin was impregnated into blotting paper. The product, which is still manufactured in France, is used as air purifier, as anti-cholera remedy, against typhus and croup.
