Man of International Affairs
In 1962, seven months before the Cuban Missile Crisis, Soviet Armenian journalist Mikhail Sagatelyan utilized his position to drop false information about a possible Soviet position on disarmament. This gave President John Kennedy the “in” to say that Premier Nikita Khrushchev might be prepared to make concessions. In 1965 Sagatelyan made an attempt at informal discussions about the Vietnam War with senior White House officer Pierre Salinger as go-between. From 1968 to ‘74 Sagatelyan was deputy editor and international correspondent of Izvestia. In 1972 he wrote a novel (“Washington Correspondent”) with the main character based on him. That same year he also wrote “Who Killed John Kennedy?” where he said that it was a right-wing plot to prolong the Cold War. In 1987 he wrote his memoirs. He died in 1994. See More
