Istanbul Governor Rejects Patriarchate Locum-Tenens in Favor of AteshianISTANBUL—The Istanbul Governor, after months of delays, finally announced its official rejection of Archbishop Karekin Bekdjian, who was elected the Patriarchal Locum Tenens during a March 2017 religious council meeting, further exacerbating the process of electing a patriarch, which has been marred by interference by Archbishop Aram Ateshian, who refused to step down as the Vicar-General following the Locum Tenens elections.
The letter from the Istanbul Governor’s office also asserted that the Turkish authorities did not recognize Bekdjian but saw Ateshian as the legitimate Vicar-General of the Istanbul Armenian Patriarchate.
Furthermore, the Istanbul Governor’s office has notified the Patriarchate that the only criteria for a patriarchal election are the death of the sitting patriarch, resignation or the vacancy of the position for other reasons. The governor’s office also stated that the Patriarch Archbishop Mesrob Mutafyan, who has been incapacitated for years due to dementia, is the recognized leader of the Istanbul Patriarchate and his illness does not meet the state criteria for electing a new patriarch.
Thus, the governor’s office stated that it cannot accept any appeal or letter sent by Archbishop Bekdjian, since it does not recognize him as the legitimate leader of the institution, despite the fact that he was elected by the religious council currently in place at the Patriarchate.
Last March, the governor’s office sent a letter to the Patriarchate saying that the election of locum tenens and the entire process of preparing for the election of a patriarch were not recognized by the Istanbul Governor. This initial rejection was presented by Ateshian at the meeting, which elected Bekdjian, after Ateshian did not receive the necessary votes to remain in the leadership of the Patriarchate.
The government’s intervention in the patriarchal election process has been at the center of controversy for the Istanbul Armenian community and has prompted Garo Paylan, an Armenian member of the Turkish Parliament to call for an investigation by the legislature into the government overreach into the Armenian community’s issues.

Armen Sarkissian meets with British-Armenian community representatives
(who were these representatives? what points did they raise?)
Armen Sarkissian, Armenian Ambassador to the UK, the candidate for the President of Armenia nominated by the Republican Party, met with the Armenian community representatives in the St.Yeghiche Armenian Church in London, reports Armenpress. The meeting aimed at exchanging views with the British-Armenian community.
Let us remind that during the meeting with Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan, Armen Sarkissian, before accepting the proposal of being
nominated for the post of the President, attached importance to the
meetings with different circles and the Diaspora representatives.
The meeting with the British-Armenian community representatives was
not a coincidence since for many years these community representatives
communicated and cooperated with Armen Sarkissian as an individual,
scientist and Ambassador for different occasions, supporting his
activity and at the same time receiving his practical support in
implementation of different programs.
Armen Sarkissian said before assuming the high responsibility trusted
him it was necessary to consult with this big Armenian family.
He drew the attention of the meeting participants on the fact that by
the adoption of the new Constitution the presidential powers underwent
some changes as Armenia transitions to a parliamentary system of
governance. He highlighted the active participation of Armenian
citizens in the process of building a democratic country and solving
the issues facing the country, as well as the further deepening and
strengthening of Armenia-Diaspora ties.
After his remarks Armen Sarkissian asked the participants to express
their opinions and issues of concern.
Many of the participants stated that Armen Sarkissian with human and
professional terms can fully demonstrate himself in this position, and
the existing broad ties and opportunities can serve for the benefit of
the Homeland.
The British-Armenian community expressed its support to Armen
Sarkissian and urged him to take an action and move forward the
honorable work for the welfare of the Homeland.

Akçam’s New Book ‘Killing Orders’ Destroys Turkish Government’s Armenian Genocide Denial Strategy
February 7, 2018
Turkey has always denied the Armenian Genocide carried out by the Ottoman Government beginning in 1915. While decades of scholarly research has decisively established the systematic annihilation of Armenians, the scarcity of direct evidence has allowed the Turkish government to persist in its denial.
In his groundbreaking new book, Killing Orders: Talat Pasha’s Telegrams and the Armenian Genocide , which was published on Jan. 23, Clark University historian Taner Akçam destroys the Turkish government’s denial strategy. Akçam includes a recently discovered document, a “ smoking gun ,” which points to the Ottoman government’s central role in planning the elimination of its Armenian population. Furthermore, he successfully demonstrates that the killing orders signed by Ottoman Interior Minister Talat Pasha, which the Turkish Government has long discredited, are authentic.
Akçam, described as “the Sherlock Holmes of Armenian Genocide” in an April 2017 New York Times article , made these landmark discoveries in a private archive. He argues that the documents he has uncovered remove a cornerstone from the denialist edifice, and definitively prove the historicity of the Armenian Genocide.
“Successive Turkish governments have gone to great lengths to ensure that evidence of the intent to extinguish the Armenian people could not be located,” said Akçam. “These findings are ‘an earthquake in the field of genocide studies.’ They will make it impossible for the Turkish Government to continue to deny the Armenian Genocide.”
Dirk Moses of the University of Sydney, Australia, says the book is “essential reading for all those interested in Genocide and Human Rights Studies.”
Akçam holds the Robert Aram and Marianne Kaloosdian and Stephen and Marian Mugar Chair in Armenian Genocide Studies at Clark’s Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. An internationally recognized human rights activist, Akçam was one of the first Turkish intellectuals to acknowledge and openly discuss the Armenian Genocide. Akcam has lectured widely and published numerous articles and books, translated into many languages.
His book, The Young Turks’ Crime Against Humanity: The Armenian Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing in the Ottoman Empire (2012), was co-winner of the Middle East Studies Association’s Albert Hourani Book Award and one of ForeignAffairs.com’s “Best Books on the Middle East.”
Akçam’s many honors include the Hrant Dink Spirit of Freedom and Justice Medal from the Organization of Istanbul Armenians and the Hrant Dink Freedom Award from the Armenian Bar Association (both in 2015); the ‘Heroes of Justice and Truth’ awarded at the Armenian Genocide Centennial commemoration in May 2015. The Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern) recognized him as a Friend of the Armenians in 2016. In May, he will receive the 2018 Outstanding Upstander Award from organization World Without Genocide.

Yerevan oncology center equipped with state-of-the-art ultra precision device
The Fanarjyan National Center of Oncology has been equipped with a state

The device, Varian Clinac IX, has been acquired thanks to Armenian and
Iranian businessmen and is the only similar device in the country.
Tananyan said the new management model enabled to invest nearly 820

According to him, radiotherapy is rather expensive globally, but
according to contracts, therapy in Armenia will be affordable for
citizens.
“I am sure that a segment of patients will undergo treatment under
state-funded conditions. Nearly 20 percent of oncology sector needs
are provided under state-funded conditions”, he said.
Radiotherapy prices start from 25,000 Euros in European countries,
from 8,000 dollars in Iran, and 4000 in Georgia, whereas the price in
Armenia will be up to 3000.
The new device is a modern super-prevision radiotherapy tool.
The device has an integrated robot-vision system, enabling ultra precision.

Whitchurch-based footballer fears he will be killed if he is deported to Armenia
By Aimee Jones
A footballer who plays in Shropshire is facing deportation to Armenia where he believes he could be imprisoned or even killed.
Hovik Nersesyan, who plays for Whitchurch Alport FC, says the Armenian government has ordered him to return for national service.
The club has hired a solicitor to represent the 23-year-old in court later this month and has launched a petition which has been signed more than 1,000 times.
"In my country they are looking for me," Hovik said. "If I go back now they will put me in prison and then after the imprisonment, I have to go to the army and my life will be in danger."
When Hovik came to the UK two years ago, footballers representing their country were exempt from national service but since then, a war has broken out with Azerbaijan.
Hovik added: "Now they don't care if you are a footballer. The government is taking everyone and sending them to fight. I read in the Azerbaijan news that Armenian soldiers are dying every day.
"Here in Shropshire I am safe and I like living here. Hopefully I will get a good decision in court."
First team manager Luke Goddard said was a worrying time for Hovik.
"As soon as we realised how serious this was, the club jumped on it and started fighting the case," he said. "We're putting a strong case together and hopefully it means he can stay.
"He's here on a visa which means he can't work, he can't claim benefits, and is just living off a few pounds with his aunt. He is a genuinely nice man who deserves the opportunity to have a chance at making it professionally."
Hovik arrived in the UK two years ago and has played for Eccleshall FC, Nantwich Town FC and Crewe FC before heading to Alport.
Mr Goddard added: "I think we've got a strong case. There's cases of people going back to their country and even being tortured. He's just an innocent young man and it's a worrying time for him but the people of Whitchurch and the club supporters are really supporting him."
Hovik's appeal for political asylum and will be heard in court on February 19.
The petition will be sent to the Home Office at the end of the week and can be signed online at avaaz.org/en/petition/The_Home_Office_Save_Hovik_Nersesyan

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also starred alongside hat-trick hero Aaron Ramsey.
Arsene Wenger was delighted to finally see Henrikh Mkhitaryan in an

Mkhitaryan set up three goals as he arguably even outshone hat-trick

Wenger's side following their shock defeat at Swansea four days

Ramsey, Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil and Mkhitaryan all looked sharp and
Wenger savoured the all-round display of his new-look attack.
He said: "When you have new players it gives always a little positive
swing, and it wakes everybody up as well, because there's suddenly
competition so they have to live with that as well.
"Overall, I think as well we have a game based on team spirit so that
kind of acceptance is very important and when they show on a football
field that they accept our game, they are even easier to integrate
into the team.
"I've been such a long time in football, but one part as well is just
purely a football lover. Your main target is just to get the players
to enjoy the game they play, to share it with the fans, so when you
have that positive experience it's great for you.

that it doesn't last for 90 minutes unfortunately."

Mkhitaryan was singled out for praise by Wenger, who finally landed
the man he attempted to sign from Borussia Dortmund before he opted to
join United.
"I met Mkhitaryan before, before he came here, because I always liked
his game but he's a player completely focused on football, dedicated
totally to the game," Wenger said.
"He comes from a country where you need special character to become a
great football player, so you have to really to love it, and that's
why he looks happy to play football because he just loves it."
Arsenal fans were also in good spirits after Ozil signed a new
contract, ending speculation over his future.
The Germany World Cup winner had been linked with a move away from the
club as his previous contract was due to expire this summer.
His commitment was welcomed inside the Emirates Stadium on Saturday
but defender Hector Bellerin always expected Ozil to remain.
