![THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE TRIALS OF THE YOUNG TURKS IN ISTANBUL (1919-1922)
In 1919, the Turkish government initiated trials of the Young Turks primarily for their role in planning and implementing the Armenian Genocide. Most of the documents presented in the Turkish court were later moved to international trials. The list included over 130 top suspects, most of whom were high officials. The military court found that it was the will of the Ittihad ve Terakki party to eliminate the Armenians physically, via its Special Organization.
The verdict read:
"The destruction of the Armenians was the result of the decision-making by the Central Committee of Ittihad ve Terakki."
[The extermination of the Armenians] was not due to a particular incident; nor was it limited to a particular locality. [Rather] it was organized by a unanimously acting central body comprising the above mentioned persons.
The Court Martial taking into consideration the above-named crimes declares, unanimously, the culpability as principal factors of these crimes the fugitives Talaat Pasha, former Grand Vizir, Enver Efendi, former War Minister, struck off the register of the Imperial Army, Cemal Efendi, former Navy Minister, struck off too from the Imperial Army, and Dr. Nazim Efendi, former Minister of Education, members of the General Council of the Union and Progress, representing the moral person of that Party. The Court pronounces, in accordance with said stipulations of the Law the death penalty against Talaat, Enver, Cemal, and Dr. Nazim."
The three top leaders of the Young Turks, also known as the "three pashas," included Mehmed Talaat Pasha, Ismail Enver and Jemal Pasha. The triumvirs had fled Turkey at the end of World War I. At the trials in Constantinople in 1919 they were sentenced to death in absentia. The Court officially ordered the disbandment of the CUP and confiscated the party's assets, and the assets of those found guilty.
The verdict was published in the governmental Official Gazette (Takvimi Vekayi).](https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xaf1/v/t1.0-9/s480x480/10453447_10205040904274664_4479340889633676460_n.jpg?oh=13edf56876eee7aea6a5c586926f70ca&oe=55508062&__gda__=1430856343_61af3ab13244156045890976bed57f5a)
