His Holiness Aphram II is the head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church. 

His Holiness Aphram II visited Armenia in Autumn of 2014 and in April 2015 

attending the canonization service of the Holy Martyrs of the Armenian 

Genocide. Syriac Orthodox Christians have suffered significantly in the hands 

of Ottoman Turks in the beginning of 20 th century. Last year the Syriac Church 

commemorated the 100 anniversary of Syriac Genocide known as the 

Syriac Sayfo.

On April 23rd 2015, the heads of the Oriental Orthodox Churches held 

a historical meeting in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin 50 years after 

their meeting in Addis Ababa in 1965 then by the gracious invitation of the 

Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia.
