ANCA Launches "Countdown to Erdogan"

November 9, 2009

ANCA Launches "Countdown to Erdogan"
Calling on President Obama to Honor
his Armenian Genocide Pledge

ANCA Website
anca.org/countdown
to feature 28 days of Armenian Genocide Affirmation Activities Leading up to December 7th White House Visit by Turkey's Prime Minister

WASHINGTON, DC - The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) today unveiled "Countdown to Erdogan" - a month-long campaign of grassroots activism aimed at encouraging the U.S. Congress, the media, and - ultimately - the White House to put America on the right side of the Armenian Genocide.

Starting on Monday, November 9th, the ANCA website - www.anca.org/countdown - will launch a new action item every day, ranging from on-line activism and call-in days to social networking, coalition-building, community outreach, and hands-on activities - all aimed at educating and inspiring President Obama, on December 7th, to tell Prime Minister Erdogan, to his face, that American stands for a truthful and just resolution of the Armenian Genocide. Each week will also include at least one action item geared to end the ongoing genocide in Darfur, as part of the ANCA's broader commitment to fostering U.S leadership in ending the cycle of genocide.

The first week of the campaign will address the U.S. Senate, the second the U.S. House, followed by the media on the third week, and then a final push in the final seven days directly to the White House. President Obama is set to meet with President Erdogan on December 7th. On the first day of the campaign, November 9th, activists are urged to send a free ANCA WebFax to their Senators and encourage them to cosponsor the Armenian Genocide Resolution, H.Res.316, spearheaded by Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and John Ensign (R-NV). A special Call-in Day for Senators is set for Thursday, November 12th.

"As we all know far too well, when President Obama met this April in Ankara with Prime Minister Erdogan, he got it wrong, breaking his clearly and repeatedly stated promise to recognize the Armenian Genocide," said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian, in a letter to campaign participants. "Even worse, in the weeks that followed, he compounded his broken pledge by joining with Turkey in pressuring Armenia, a landlocked and blockaded country, into accepting a historical "commission" that calls into question this very crime against humanity. This time, on American soil, President Obama has a chance to make it right - to honor his pledge and be, as he stated during the campaign, the President the American people deserve."

The "Countdown to Erdogan" campaign launch coincides with recent statements by Prime Minister Erdogan denying both the Armenian and Darfur genocides. In recent remarks, he asserted that "It's not possible for a Muslim to commit genocide." His statements came in response to international pressure on Turkey to arrest Sudanese dictator Omar al-Bashir during a scheduled visit, later postponed, to Ankara. "We are comfortable [with the visit of al-Bashir]," explained Erdogan.

DAY 28: SEND A FREE ANCA WEBFAX TO YOUR SENATORS IN SUPPORT OF S.RES.316. Take Action Now...

ARMENIA MUST BE NAMED AGGRESSOR
SAYS AZERI RULING PARTY OFFICIAL

(Today.az) - A leading member of Azerbaijan’s ruling New Azerbaijan Party on Monday called on the OSCE Minsk Group mediating the Karabakh conflict to officially label Armenia as an “aggressor country.”
“We can not achieve a just solution to the conflict until the OSCE Minsk Group, set up to resolve Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, recognises Armenia as an aggressor country,” New Azerbaijan Party Deputy Chairman Ali Ahmadov said.
“This conflict began as a result of Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan. This solution lies in eliminating consequences of this aggression if we want a just solution,” he said.
“If aggression is not mentioned at all and the mediators and the OSCE Minsk Group, set up to solve this conflict do not call a spade a spade, namely, do not call an aggressor an aggressor, how and by what principles they are going to solve this conflict?,” Ahmadov said.
All those who make efforts to resolve the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict should call those responsible by name and take measures to punish them, he added.
Azerbaijan invaded the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic in the early 90s after the indigenous Armenian territory, trapped under Soviet Azeri rule for seven decades, declared its independence from the collapsing Soviet Union. Azeri forces were expelled from Karabakh in 1994 and a Russian brokered ceasefire that year brought an end to the fighting. The OSCE Minsk Group, co-chaired by the US, France, and Russia, has been working with Armenia and Azerbaijan since then to find a resolution to the conflict.

SARGSYAN SAYS PROTOCOLS WILL NOT AFFECT
GENOCIDE RECOGNITION AND KARABAKH RESOLUTION

YEREVAN (RFE/RL) – President Serzh Sargsyan continued to defend his conciliatory policy on Turkey on Monday, reiterating that his administration will not stop seeking international recognition of the Armenian genocide or make additional concessions to Azerbaijan.
He made the assurances at the Etchmiadzin headquarters of the Armenian Apostolic Church while attending a meeting of top clerical and secular representatives of its worldwide dioceses that was chaired by His Holiness Catholicos Karekin II.
Sargsyan delivered a speech there before answering questions from the participants. Statements issued by the president’s and the Catholicos’s offices following the event mainly related to Armenia’s fence-mending protocols with Turkey and the current state of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
In a written statement, the presidential press service cited Sargsyan as saying that the signing of the protocols “does not mean, in any way, a renunciation of efforts at international recognition of the Genocide.”
Sargsyan has significantly complicated those efforts by accepting a Turkish proposal to set up a joint panel that would look into the events of the Armenian Genocide. Ankara has long sought such a commission to exploit the existence to prevent more countries from recognizing its crime against the Armenian people.
Many analysts close to the negotiations with Turkey and Azerbaijan say that Sargsyan has effectively agreed to speed up the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with more concessions to Azerbaijan. Armenian leaders have repeatedly denied that, arguing that none of the Turkish-Armenian protocols makes mention of the conflict. But Turkey’s top leadership has repeatedly made clear that Turkey’s parliament will not ratify the protocols until Armenia agrees to a resolution to the conflict favouring Azerbaijan.
According to the presidential statement, Sargsyan “once again reiterated that those two process are in no way connected with each other.” Armenia’s disputes with Azerbaijan and Turkey should be settled “separately,” he said.
Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian likewise insisted on Friday that the Armenian-Turkish thaw and the Nagorno-Karabakh negotiations are “two separate processes.”
“This is not only the Armenian approach but the approach of the international community,” he told Reuters.
But Nalbandian’s Turkish counterpart, Ahmet Davutoglu, said earlier in the week that the Turkish parliament will not ratify the agreements unless international efforts to end the Karabakh dispute yield a breakthrough soon.
Armenian leaders have implicitly threatened to annul the agreements if the Turks “drag out” the ratification process. “If one of the sides will delay and create some obstacles in the way of ratification and implementation, I think it could bear all the responsibility for the negative consequences,” warned Nalbandian. He also made clear that Armenia and Azerbaijan will not cut a framework deal on Karabakh “tomorrow or in one month’s time or in a very short period of time.”
Sargsyan, for his part, said on Monday that Yerevan has already devised contingency plans for various “possible scenarios of the process of normalising relations with Turkey.” He did not elaborate.

Γεννάται μέσα μου ένα ερωτηματικό: Πόση ΑΠΕΧΘΕΙΑ, πόσο ΜΙΣΟΣ, πόση ΕΠΙΘΕΤΙΚΟΤΗΤΑ έναντι των Αρμενίων, ειδικά των Αρμενοκυπρίων;

Internal Documents Reveal UK Officials
Misled Parliament on Armenian Genocide

By Harut Sassounian - Publisher, The California Courier

A prominent legal expert, Mr. Geoffrey Robertson, exposed this week the false and inaccurate statements on the Armenian Genocide made by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). The international jurist revealed that for many years the FCO (Foreign Ministry) had misled the British Parliament on the facts of the Armenian Genocide in order to curry favor with the Turkish government.
The 40-page meticulously-researched report, commissioned by the Armenian Centre of London, is based on hitherto secret documents obtained from the Foreign Office through the Freedom of Information Act. Mr. Robertson, the author of a report titled, "Was there an Armenian Genocide?" served as first President of the UN War Crimes Court in Sierra Leone.
Mr. Robertson had to make repeated requests over several months to the British government in order to obtain internal documents that the Foreign Office was legally obligated to release. According to the FCO, some of the documents were not released at all, while those eventually made public were partially blacked out, in order not to damage Britain’s relations with Turkey.
In his report, Mr. Robertson explains that the Armenian Centre had asked him "to consider the attitude of the British government in refusing to accept that the massacres of Armenians in 1915-16 amounted to genocide, and whether its reasons for taking this position are valid and sustainable in international law."

News in Brief by Sevag Devletian
  • Armenia's Foreign Minister has rejected Turkish calls for concessions in the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh in exchange for the historic rapprochement between Yerevan and Ankara. Speaking to Reuters last Friday, Edward Nalbandian said negotiations between Turkey and Armenia were over and both sides were obliged to move quickly to establish diplomatic relations and open their border under accords signed this month.
  • U.S. President Barack Obama will host Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan at a White House meeting on December 7, the White House announced. Obama and Erdogan will discuss implementing a "shared strategy" for Afghanistan and Pakistan, increasing economic and security cooperation with Iraq, Middle East peace efforts, normalising relations with Armenia, relations with Cyprus and other issues.
  • The Asian Development Bank will extend up to 500 million USD to Armenia to upgrade its main 550-km north south corridor road, Gagik Grigoryan Head of Foreign Relations Department at RA Ministry of Transport and Communication said.
  • A Malatya foundation established to build mosques has assumed the financial costs of the restoration of a historic Armenian church located in the neighbourhood where assassinated Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink was born, Today’s Zaman reported. The head of the Carmuzu Tepebasi Mosque Building and Preservation Foundation, Latif Yildirim, said they started planning the project to help restore the Armenian Tashoron Church in 2008 and wrote letters to the Prime Ministry and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as well as Armenian businessmen to win their support.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Armenians,
From my latest visit to Lebanon, I was introduced to Mr. Bassam Lahoud, founding member of the foundation, "The Lebanese House of Photography" by the Cyprus Ambassador in Beirut.
We are at the moment researching mainly on the photographic history of Amchit and looking for any Armenians or photographers from Cyprus who had taken any pictures there and most importantly the Melkonian Brothers who were photographers, who used to come from Nicosia to Lebanon to do portraits and take photos in Lebanon, specially in Amchit a city near the antique city of Byblos in the 19th century in Beirut.
We would appreciate any help from anyone who has any information regarding where to find this photographic material and most importantly the Melkonian brothers where can we find any or their photographic archives, as we would like to scan them and print them to be exhibited in Lebanon at the foundation.
You can contact me on

Daniel Sagherian writes (1)

  • The reality is that, as a country we are in bigger countries' pockets; and as diaspora we are citizens of other countries: at best, naturalised citizens of new lands, with the oath that we will do our military as well as civil (clandestine) duties to those countries...

Daniel Sagherian writes again... (2)

  • That's the aftermath of a genocide : Kill as many, expatriate the rest, and time will make them citizens of other lands, with oaths of allegiances to those "odar" lands. All leaders have obligations to other lands : And if naturalised, even worse, as they have taken oaths of even clandestine roles...
and again... (3)
  • So many of our political leaders are naturalised citizens of other lands. Them are the Genocide survivors... subject to foreign laws, taxations, political agenda. We cannot change that; we are the children of survivors. But at least we should see the truth. As for tiny suffering countries as ours, they are pawns for Russia, USA, Turkey, Iran, Arab petro-dollars...

Watch Erdogan enraged and unscripted

Dear Reader

Armenia's under merciless pressure.

Landlocked, blockaded, and bordered by enemies, her arm is being twisted by the biggest bullies on the block.

Turkey and Azerbaijan, sadly with the help of our own State Department, are pressing for "Protocols" that threaten Armenia, abandon our rights, and cast doubt on the Genocide.

And, even worse, they're pushing for "Madrid Principles" that trade the up-front surrender of vast Armenian lands for a vague promise that Azerbaijan may someday allow a decision on Karabagh's status.

Armenia's total surrender. That's what they want.

[Click on this video to see Erdogan enraged and unscripted.]

Armenia can't stand up against these forces alone.

She needs our help. Your help.

That's why I'm asking you for a secure on-line donation so we can push back against misguided U.S. policymakers, hell-bent on pressuring Armenia.

* America should stand up for truth and against
Turkey's "historical commission."

* America should stand up for freedom and against
the surrender of Nagorno Karabagh.

* America should stand up for real peace and justice,
and against foreign pressure on a free people.

Your secure on-line donation of $25, $50, or $75 is needed right away to help us lift the pressure from Armenia and pave the way toward a lasting peace based on real principles.

If you can, give more: $500, $250, or $100.

Your dollars truly do make a real difference.

FATHER FRANK’S RANTS - A.H. & Israel

Rant Number 370 5 November 2009

‘There should be a monument to Adolf Hitler in every Israeli town square.’ A ribald utterance. Almost as nasty as that by a British historian who said there should be a monument to ‘obliteration Bomber Harris’ in every German city. Made by a scoffing young man I met during a demo in Trafalgar Square. Naturally, I remonstrated. ‘I am Jewish!’ he countered, grinning. A lie, perhaps. Yet, I wondered. A loony claim. Still, could there be a kind of perverse, deviant logic in it?

Only recently on British TV millions of viewers saw far right leader Nick Griffin boast of his party’s support for the state of Israel. And my Swedish friend Chris tells me that in his country the extreme movement Sverigedemokraterna also roots for the Jewish nation. Ted Ekeroth, one of their members, and an avowed Islamophobe, even enjoyed the Israeli Herzl Award. (Theodore Herzl being the very founder of modern Zionism.) In Italy, former neo-fascist leader Gianfranco Fini also swears eternal support to Israel. Just tactical camouflage, probably. But nobody could accuse the distinguished Jewish intellectual George Steiner of belonging dans cette galere. His argument is literary and fictional in form and yet it is prima facie endowed with a weird, wicked appeal.

In The Portage to San Cristobal of A.H. Steiner has a team of Israeli Nazi hunters seizing a taciturn old man hiding in the Amazonian jungle. Yes, A.H. is Adolf Hitler. His captors would like to have him tried, Eichmann-like, in Israel, but time is short, so they decide to judge him there and then. But the Fuhrer, in a long, creepy diatribe, defends himself. In a nutshell, Adolf’s barefaced contention is that he fathered the Jewish state. ‘You should honour me. Thanks to me, Zion’s millenarian dream has come true. You have got your ancient nation back.’ He also raves about being Israel’s awaited Messiah, accuses the Jews of having invented racism...und so weiter.

Provocative but flimsy. First, if the Jewish state really needs a Gentile founder, he isn’t a plebeian Austrian adventurer but a refined English aristocrat. Statesman Arthur Balfour, the author of the 1917 British declaration favouring ‘the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.’ (Methinks there should be quite a few statues to him in Eretz Israel.)

Second, A.H. never remotely intended to bring about a proud, self-assertive and martial polity like the current state of Israel. Hitler’s Steiner no more coheres with the obsessive anti-Semite A.H. than Milton’s Satan resembles the authentic Father of Lies. Indeed, one of Steiner’s characters warns against listening to the terrible old man’s seductive nonsense, lest they end up believing it. A.H. strove to annihilate the Jews, not to restore them to their ancestral homeland. The only similarity between Mein Kampf and Herzl’s Juden Staat is that they were both written in German.

Third, the Messiah thing. It is true during WWII Hitler fantasised about himself being ‘a religious figure. Soon I’ll be the great chief of the Tatars....I shall become Khan’, he declared to Martin Bormann. He even deluded himself that ‘Arabs and Moroccans are mingling my name with their prayers.’ (See Hitler’s Table Talks, p.203) Might as well have fancied himself as the awaited Mahdi! Was it tongue in cheek? Had he really meant it, it would be another example of the Fuhrer’s self-delusion – a bit like certain mad passages in Nietzsche’s Ecce Homo, in which the philosopher imagines every stranger’s face lighting up with joy in his presence. Insane, all too insane.

Fourth, pray consider. Where Hitler is now, if he has not perished, what punishment would be more condign to is crimes? I mean a spiritual punishment. (Bodily chastisements make no sense in the Hereafter, because ‘nothing burns in hell, except the ego’.) Have your pick. I submit that the endless contemplation of the triumphs today enjoyed by the race he sought to destroy might suit. The contemplation of a powerful Jewish state might be part of his more exquisite torments. Dig it?

‘Dad, you’ve suddenly gone Zionist? Does justice means nothing to you? How can you whitewash Israeli crimes? The occupied lands, the fanatical colonists, that Liebermann racist guy, the Sabras, the daily oppression, the humiliation of Palestinians, the Gaza massacre – even Judge Goldstone admits that - and Jenin before that and...’ Thus e-mails me from Malmo my angry boy Linus, to whom I submit my incipient writings. The impetuosity of youth! Or, more likely, his current Palestinian girl friend. A familiar syndrome.

‘Calm down, Lin. You are picking on the wrong guy. Since Gaza I have been on four pro-Palestinian marches. I have spoken in conferences, written articles. All on your side. And I have got far too many Arab and Muslim and anti-Zionist friends to start waving the flag with the Star of David. Here I am simply concerned to draw a line between neo-fascist nonsense and...the rest. Liebermann is awful but he balanced by brave Israelis like Uri Avineri and Gilad Atzmon. As to ‘the Sabras’, do you know what you are talking about? You’d better look up Israeli writer Oz Almog. Yes, Sabras were supposed to be a Spartan or Prussian breed. A novel, non-intellectual, non-Jewish Israeli Jew. A self-conscious military elite or, dare I say it? – an agrarian master race – militarism always battens on country values – destined to renew the biblical victories of Joshua and David. Moshe Dayan perhaps came closest to incarnating the Sabra ideal. Guess even A.H. might have admired him. But the culture which gave rise to the sabras is no more. The rural, puritanical world they came from has gone. Most Israelis today are urban creatures, in many ways as deracinated and as individualistic as their Diaspora ancestors. Some of the colonists are fanatical Arab-haters, sure, but you can’t paint all Israelis over with the same brush, can you?’

Linus blabs on. He’ll soon grow even more petulant, as he learns that in his youth his dad actually bought the propaganda myth of little Israel threatened with destruction by its Arab neighbours. At the start the 1967 six-day-war, before the lightening Israeli conquests that stunned the world, a callow, naive Fr Frank then in Rome volunteered to go to Israel and help out as a civil worker. Little I knew what was really going on. Folies de jeunesse. But I have since seen the light.

As to A.H., he no longer means anything at all.

Reps. Pallone and LoBiondo Lead Bipartisan Congressional Effort

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressional Armenian Caucus Co-Chair Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and New Jersey Republican Frank LoBiondo were joined by dozens of their House Colleagues in urging Senate and House Appropriations Committee leaders to maintain $48 million in U.S. assistance to Armenia, increased aid to Nagorno Karabagh, and continued military assistance parity to Armenia and Azerbaijan in the fiscal year (FY) 2010 foreign aid bill, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

"We want to thank Congressmen Pallone and Lobiondo for leading this bipartisan outreach to members of the State-Foreign Operations Subcommittee - and also to express our appreciation to our friends serving on this panel, including Nita Lowey, Adam Schiff, Mark Kirk, Steve Rothman, and Jesse Jackson - for their work in support of the pro-Armenia provisions in the FY2010 foreign aid bill," said Aram Hamparian, Executive Director of the ANCA. "We are hopeful that the conference committee, which will be called to reconcile the Senate and House versions of this legislation, will approve the higher House figures for aid to Armenia and Nagorno Karabagh, endorse the House's decision to maintain military aid parity between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and support the House language reaffirming Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act."

Earlier this year, both the House and Senate adopted their versions of the FY 2010 foreign aid bill, with the House adopting higher figures for Armenia and Nagorno Karabagh and including new language reaffirming Section 907 restriction on U.S. assistance to Azerbaijan, due to that country's ongoing blockade of Armenia. Turkish Envoy Links Denial to Newly Signed Turkey-Armenia Agreement in televised VOA segment

ANCA Executive Director Aram HamparianWASHINGTON, DC - Turkey's Ambassador to the United States, Nabi Sensoy, appearing on a Voice of America television news segment on the Senate introduction of the Armenian Genocide Resolution, cited the newly signed Turkey-Armenia Protocols as a new reason for his government's intensifying campaign to block U.S. recognition of this crime against humanity, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

Responding to a question on this legislation, the Turkish envoy stressed: "I hope that there will be no progress on this issue. I don't think it was the right time to take this step since the resolution was introduced immediately after the signing of the Turkey-Armenia Protocols. It is wrong and sad. I am hopeful that it [the resolution] will not reach the [Senate] floor."

ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian, who was interviewed by Voice of America's Aram Vanetsyan for this segment, cited the broad-based support for the Armenian Genocide Resolution from President Barack Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during their years in the Senate. Responding to reports that the Turkey-Armenia Protocols would harm international Armenian Genocide affirmation efforts, Hamparian explained that Turkey entered into negotiations with Armenia, not because of any charitable impulse, but, rather, because of its desire to somehow derail the growing pressure of Armenians worldwide in isolating Ankara's bankrupt campaign of denial. Armenian Americans will, Hamparian added, continue to press, assertively, powerfully, and effectively for a truthful and just resolution of the Armenian Genocide. Read more. . . | Watch Video. . .

Senate Majority Leader Urges Secretary of State to Meet with Armenian American Leaders

WASHINGTON, DC - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has formally shared the reservations of the Silver State's Armenian community regarding the dangers of the recently signed Turkey-Armenia Protocols with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

In a October 30, 2009 letter to ANCA-Nevada activist Razmig Libarian, the Senate leader reported that he had recently written to Secretary Clinton to pass along the concerns of his state's citizens of Armenian heritage, and to encourage her to meet directly with the national leadership of the Armenian American community regarding the state of Turkey-Armenia relations.

In his letter to Secretary Clinton, dated October 20, 2009, Senator Reid wrote: "I am sure you are aware that this agreement has raised concerns in the Armenian community inside the United States. I have received many letters from Nevadans who do not support the creation of an international commission to examine the historical record on the genocide and who believe that the agreements are unfair to Armenia. (I have included a sample letter below). Given the serious nature of the community's concerns, I felt it was important to raise them directly with you. The commission is particularly sensitive to the Armenian-American community since the Armenian genocide has never been recognized by Turkey."
