Every year numerous American and Canadian politicians are invited to these jolly affairs by ambassadors, consuls, unions, corporations, special interest groups and even NGOs. The politicians are wined and dined, shown the sites, introduced to decision makers in the host country, given propaganda bumph and in most instances their travel and accommodation expenses are picked up by their hosts. Gifts, called “souvenirs” are handed. The more unsophisticated the hosts, the bigger the gifts and more blatant is the largesse extended to these politicians with flexible ethics.  Thus, on a recent trip to Azerbaijan, U.S. politicians received gold-painted plates, silk scarves, briefcases, crystal tea sets, and two types of rugs. Exploding Two Repugnant Ankara Claims

One of the ornate pillars of Turkey’s Genocide denialism is to blame the victims for their slaughter. The repugnant layers of duplicity, supported by Turkish historians and the doctored state archives, claim that Armenians were deported (Turkey had no intention to commit genocide, the fairy tale goes) because they were plotting to rise against the Ottoman Empire, dismember it and establish an Armenian republic. Historians have shot down the self-seeking Turkish rationalization but the light-touch police state keeps churning out its packaged falsehoods. Another widely-disseminated Ankara fable is that Turkish government archives (1915-’23) are open to Armenian and third-party researchers.

Armenia Protests Continue Unabated

For more than a week the Armenian and international media have reported the "Electric" protests on Paghramyan Street in Yerevan which is now on its ninth day. Political pundits have already begun analyzing the reasons and repercussions of the development, in addition to commenting on whether the unrest is of domestic origin or is being directed by outside forces--à la the Kiev maidan. A third speculation is whether the "home-made" protest could be hijacked by outsiders. The below news reports--describing the fluid situation--are a sample of what's on the electronic media--Editor.

Armenian Bar Association Condemns Police Actions in Yerevan

The peaceful march of a civil society must not lead to the barrel of a water cannon. The voice of the peaceful demonstrator must not be muted by the gloved hand of a ski-masked officer. And the peaceful exercise of the inalienable freedoms of speech and assembly must not be rendered the besieged enemy of the state.
The Armenian Bar Association condemns, with grave disappointment, the actions taken by police authorities during the early morning of June 23, 2015, in Yerevan, Armenia as contrary to a state’s obligations to its public. In societies governed by the rule of law, the duty of authorities in the face of public demonstrations is patently straightforward: to ensure that the manner in which public demonstrations are conducted does not pose a threat to public safety. To be clear, the purpose of policing authorities is to ensure that the manner in which the people voice their message is peaceful—it is not to police the message itself.

These thoughts--long in advance of the Canadian federal elections in October--are precipitated by the announcement of Norair Serengulian that he has withdrawn his candidacy for the Liberal Party nominations in the Montreal suburb of Ahuntsic-Cartierville.
Keghart.com and other media venues have previously reflected on four Canadian-Armenians aspiring for the nomination as candidates under the banner of the Liberal Party of Canada. Kurdish Conference Re Humanitarian Crisis

A Canadian cabinet minister, two MPs, a Toronto councilor, a former judge, a newly-elected Kurdish MP from Bingöl, Turkey, an evangelist preacher, the European representative of the ‘Kurdish Rojave Cantons Regional Government’ in Syria, and Syrian-Kurdish spokesman took part in the Canadian Conference on the Kurdish Humanitarian Crisis on June 21 in Toronto.
While the gathering’s name focused on the Kurdish tragedy, the speakers also addressed the plight of the other Syrian and Iraqi minorities victimized by the so-called Islamic State and other terrorists. About 250 people attended the conference. ....Read more >>

Skewed Priorities and Aleppo Armenians

No explanation is required to assert that the Republic of Armenia (RoA) should protect the Armenian Diaspora in addition to looking after the interests of its citizens. But what is happening to Aleppo Armenians is characteristic of how the Armenian leadership--inside and outside of the RoA--think and behave when it comes to national critical and existential issues.

For months Aleppo has been largely surrounded by Syrian opposition militants. Transportation to and from Aleppo has been confined to a secondary road secured by the Assad regime forces. Frequent power and water disruptions, the shortage and high cost of food have all contributed to the misery of Aleppo residents. Despite the siege, an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 Armenians have remained in Syria's largest city risking their lives in an increasingly brutal civil war which is being fueled by outside forces, particularly Turkey. ....Read more >>

Thirteen Schools Tune into Genocide Education

Merrimack Valley --- In what was a phenomenal approach to the genocide centennial this year, 13 schools called upon the Armenian Genocide Education Committee of Merrimack Valley to offer presentations to its students.

Lagging Transport Impedes Armenia’s Economy

Armenia--a mountainous country with severe winters and heavy snowfall-- has an economy that depends on transport far more than most countries. Armenia has a few railway lines or an extensive road network. While the rate of car ownership has grown steadily in recent years, it is still relatively low. Public transport plays a critical role, especially in the cities. The transportation network capacity is adequate to accommodate estimated demand up to 2020, but the infrastructure has deteriorated due to lack of funds. In recent years, the government has given priority to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the infrastructure. A Blueprint for the Future

It’s time “The Viability of a Worldwide Armenian Organization” by Dr. Z.S. Andrew Demirdjian was reprinted and with a much bigger run. The book, published in 2010 by Xlibris, is a blueprint for the future of the Armenian nation. The slim volume (185 pages) should be pored over by every Armenian committed to a bright future for Armenians.
The book makes a persuasive case on how to connect the fragmented Armenian Diaspora. Dr. Demirdjian believes the creation of a pan-Armenian organization would be the first concrete step to unite Armenians and subsequently proceed with their campaign for compensation and restitution from Turkey. A meta-Armenian organization can be a permanent entity looking after the national interests of all Armenians.
Dr. Demirdjian has written hundreds of articles and editorials in refereed journals and received over twelve best article/author awards for his research. Among his half-a-dozen books are “The Emergence of the Ottoman Empire: A Pattern of Passionate Behavior”, “The Demon in Diplomacy” and “The Triangle of Trade in The Cradle of Civilization” where he proved that Armenia was a constituent member of Mesopotamia and the bona fide birthplace of civilization. ....Read more >>

‘Cultural Genocide’? No, Canada Committed Regular Genocide

Perhaps the most controversial issue to follow the conclusion of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has been the affirmation that the government of Canada had committed “cultural genocide” against Indigenous people through the Indian Residential Schools (IRS) system.

Turkish Elections Mark Turning Point

On June 7, 2015 citizens of Turkey went to the polls to elect 550 members to their parliament. What did the election mean for the Armenians of Turkey, Armenia and the Diaspora?
First a few facts and context: More than 85% of the eligible 55 million voters, or some 45 million people voted. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is supposed to be impartial and above party politics by law, relentlessly campaigned every day on behalf of his former party, Justice and Progress Party (AKP in Turkish), leaving the current Prime Minister and leader of the party Ahmet Davutoglu mostly out of the limelight. The two opposition parties, Kemalist/nationalistic Republican Party (CHP in Turkish) and the ultra-nationalistic / racist National Movement Party (MHP in Turkish) tried to attack the governing AKP party but was mostly ineffective. The rising star in the election was the newly-formed pro-Kurdish Peoples Democratic Party (HDP in Turkish) which ran an extremely effective campaign, organizing not only in Kurdish-populated regions but fielding candidates all over Turkey on a platform of equality, peace and democracy for all ethnic minorities and other underprivileged citizens. The HDP faced the additional obstacle of needing to go over the barrier of 10% of the total votes, failing which they would have lost the right to be represented in  parliament.
