Armenian districts reinstating peace in Syria’s Aleppo

Hripsime Hovhannsiyan
12.12.16

The Armenian districts in Syria’s economic capital, Aleppo, are slowly recovering from war devastations, says Zarmik Boghigian, the editor-in-chief of the local Armenian weekly Gandzasar.

“After liberating different parts of the city from rebels’ control, the municipal authorities rapidly embarked on rehabilitation efforts,” he told Tert.am, ruling out the local Armenians’ return in the nearest future .

“Those who have relatives and friends have decided to return, but we do not have assurances that all can be back now. The city is only now recovering, with lots of parts still lying in ruins.”

Boghigian added that the local authorities are also recovering the local industries, economy, and electricity and water supply in an attempt to return the city to its normal life.

“But safety is in the first place, for which we have no certainty. There are still several districts which will be hopefully liberated in the couple of days to come,” he said.

Armenia’s IT sector needs 3,000-4,000 skilled personal
December 12.

Armenia’s IT sector needs currently three-four thousand skilled personnel, according to executive director of Synopsys Armenia Hovik Musayelyan. In his words, the only problem that hinders the development of IT sector in Armenia is the lack of high-skilled personnel.
Speaking to journalists as transport, communication and IT minister Vahan Martirosyan visited the company today, Musaelyan said universities in Armenia are not able to prepare personnel who immediately after graduation will be in demand.

"We are implementing a variety of educational programs with universities , for example, together with National Polytechnic University we are running the department of microelectronic circuits and systems, and I think that the use of such models can give excellent results", - he said.

"Some 300 people are being trained now in our company, 200 of them are students from the Polytechnic University,’ he said, adding that dozens of students get jobs in Synopsys Armenia, and 45% of the workforce are former students of the company.

According to 2015 data, Armenia’s IT sector has 500 companies, which provide an annual growth of 20-25%. The share of IT sector in Armenia's GDP is 3.8%. -0-

World Bank revises to zero its economic growth outlook for Armenia in 2016
December 9.

The World Bank has revised downwards its economic growth outlook for Armenia for 2016 to zero from its previous forecast of 1.9%, Gohar Gyulumyan, World Bank Co-Task Team Leader of the Project, said today

Gyulumyan described economic developments in the country in recent months as ‘disappointing’, saying after a 4.5% growth reported for the first quarter of the year things began to worsen dramatically from July.

She cited official data, which say that the economy declined in the third quarter by 2.8% compared to the same period of 2015.

"Based on these figures we are revising our forecasts. Still in October, we expected the growth to be 2.4% for 2016, and 2.8% for 2017, and up to 3% in the medium term. Now based on the indicators for January-October, when the economic activity index was only 0.4%, we have also revised our forecasts, according to which we do not expect positive economic growth in Armenia for this year, which in the best case may be zero, "- said Gyulumyan.

At that she stressed that based on data from a World Bank study, the GDP growth in 2017 will not exceed 2%. -0-

Amenia Gets More Loans From IMF, World Bank
December 09, 2016

The World Bank and International Monetary Fund have allocated over $71
million in fresh loans to Armenia which will be mostly used for
financing its budget deficit that has widened this year due to
worse-than-expected tax collection.

The bank said on Friday that its budgetary loan worth $50 million will
support a "wide range of reforms" promised by the Armenian
authorities. "This operation will help to improve the country's
competitiveness and business environment, and enhance employment
opportunities", the head of its Yerevan office, Laura Bailey, said in
a statement.

The World Bank funding was announced the day after the Armenian
parliament approved the 2017 state budget envisaging major cuts in
public spending. The government hopes to rein in the budget deficit
which is expected to equal about 6 percent of GDP this year because of
a shortfall in tax revenue reflecting sluggish economic growth.

The IMF approved of the fiscal measures planned by the government when
it disbursed late on Wednesday a fresh $21.2 million installment of a
$112 million lending program for Armenia launched in March 2014.

The IMF's three year Extended Fund Facility (EFF) is designed to
support macroeconomic stability in the country. The latest
disbursement raised to $90 million million the total amount of EFF
funding made available to the government and the Central Bank of
Armenia to date.

"The authorities remain committed to fiscal consolidation and debt
sustainability, as embodied in their fiscal rule, which aims to ensure
that debt remains below 60 percent of GDP over the medium term," said
David Lipton, the fund's first deputy managing director. "In this
context, they have developed a fiscal consolidation plan for 2017 and
beyond."

Lipton also stressed that "further structural reforms" are essential
for a faster growth of the Armenian economy. "Strengthening domestic
competition and regulatory reforms are pivotal to creating a more
broad-based, private sector-led economy," he said.

Both lending institutions again praised Armenia's new and
comprehensive Tax Code that was enacted this summer over strong
opposition objections. Armenian opposition lawmakers denounced its
provisions envisaging higher taxes on fuel, alcohol and tobacco as
well as increases in income tax levied from many employees.

"The new Code is a major step forward in the tax policy reform,"
insisted Gohar Gyulumyan, a World Bank official in Yerevan.

"By revisiting the level and structure of income taxes, reducing the
number of exemptions and tax gaps, increasing excise taxes and
strengthening coverage of high-wealth individuals and large companies,
the Code will lead to higher revenue mobilization in the medium-term,"
she said.

Prussian Carp Reserves Reduced Twice in Lake Sevan Because of Non-Regulated Hunting and Illegal Fishing
Because of non-regulated and poaching the reserves of even Prussian carp have reduced around twice. To ensure natural reproduction of the fish the fishing and crawfish hunting was banned in Lake Sevan from 1 to 25 December and from 6 to 20 January 2017.

The same temporary ban refers to all the fish. After the end of the ban it’s permitted to fish the Prussian Carp and crawfish.

As Sevak Baloyan, Head of Animal Resource Management Department of Nature Protection Ministry, informed EcoLur, the trout is a red-listed species and its fishing is banned as long as it gets out of the Red Book of Armenia and has industrial reserves. The fishing of the whitefish will be banned by Nature Protection Ministry as long as the National Academy of Sciences permits its industrial fishing.

Bardukh Gabrielyan, Director of Scientific Center for Zoology and Hyroecology of NAS RA, informed EcoLur that the industrial reserves of the fish in Lake Sevan made up 450 tons in 2016. In order to permit whitefish fishing its reserves need to make at least 1000 tons. Reminder: in the Soviet years the industrial reserves of the whitefish in Lake Sevan made up 30,000 tons. As of 2016, the industrial reserve of the trout in Lake Sevan is 1.5 tons. In order to permit the fishing of this species, it should get out of the Red Book and have at least 1000 tons of industrial reserves to permit the hunting.

As of 016, the industrial reserves of the crawfish made up 4500 tons, the Prussian carp – 100 tons, which is lower about twice as compared with the last year. In 2015 the industrial reserves made up 190 tons.

Armenia at Twenty-Five: A Rough Ride
December 07, 2016

Summary: The sustainability of Armenia’s model of partial democracy is being challenged by growing popular dissatisfaction and a looming generational turnover.

Armenia is at a juncture. Its economy is not meeting the needs of its population, forcing many to leave the country. The International Organization for Migration estimated that 23.7 percent of all Armenian citizens lived outside the country in 2015—likely one of the main reasons why the Armenian government created a Ministry of Diaspora in 2008. The bulk of these people live in Russia, solidifying the economic and people-to-people ties between the two countries. About 500,000 fewer people live in Armenia today than did during the late Soviet era. Most Armenian migrants generally leave the country during their prime working years . Some never return. This outbound migration deprives Armenia of talent and initiative, impeding its ability to develop a productive economy. The country’s geographic isolation and its closed borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey add to its economic woes, as do high levels of corruption, a weak judiciary, an opaque political system, and the persistent threat of war.

Armenia is actively seeking partnerships with China, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States to help boost trade and investment, but is doing so in a way that does not alienate Russia. Yerevan’s problem, however, is that these countries generally do not see Armenia as the main prize in a region with the untapped potential of Iran, the huge market of Turkey, or the more welcoming investor climate and geographic location of Georgia. Moscow also has warned Armenia not to stray too far from its orbit—a clear message from Armenia’s security guarantor at a time of geopolitical uncertainty spanning from the Middle East to Central Asia.

While this geopolitical environment is complex, ultimately it is the social upheaval seen in Armenia over the last few years that should unnerve the political establishment. The events of July 2016 suggest Armenian society is frustrated and has little trust in the political establishment’s ability to solve the country’s growing problems. President Sargsyan responded in the fall of 2016 by reshuffling the government in an attempt to put forward fresh and capable faces before the 2017 parliamentary elections. Some of those senior officials are European or U.S.-educated , while others, such as the prime minister, are seen as closer to Moscow —a clear indication Sargsyan hopes to continue Armenia’s delicate foreign policy balance.

However, what happens to Armenia after the current president’s term ends in 2018 remains to be seen. Amid growing discontent with the status quo and competition among rival political factions, Sargsyan’s purported plan to move to the prime minister’s office in order to remain at the helm—as some believe he intends to do—could prove risky. If he does not, all eyes will be on one of those new, fresh faces, adding to the mounting expectations of change.

28 years after the devastating earthquake in Spitak
07 Dec 2016

December 7 marks the 28th anniversary of the destructive earthquake in Spitak. The earthquake hit 40 % of the territory of Armenia, densely populated region with 1 million people.

The cities of Spitak, Leninakan, Kirovakan and Stepanavan, as well as hundreds of villages were totally or partially destroyed. Twenty-five thousand people were killed, 500 thousand were left without shelter. 17% of the buildings were destroyed, the work of 170 industrial companies was halted.

Immediately after the earthquake Armenians all over the world united and offered comprehensive support to the Motherland. “SOS Armenie,” “Aznavour for Armenia” and tens of other organizations were created. Many Diaspora Armenians rushed to Armenia, bringing food, clothes and medicine.

Many of them – doctors, psychologists, constructors, architects – stayed in Armenia and personally participated in the rescue works.

A number of countries of the world continued to support Armenia years after the earthquake. Italians built a whole dwelling district in Spitak, Norwegians built a hospital, which was named after great humanist F. Nansen.

A school built by an Englishmen was opened in Gyumri. Prime Minister of Great Britain Margaret Thatcher participated in the opening ceremony.

Return of Sis Catholicosate Case to be Formally Submitted to the European Court of Human Rights
05/12/16

Aram I: ‘Recognition and Reparation: This is Our Clear and Firm Position as a People and a Church.’

ANTELIAS, Lebanon (Armenian Weekly)—Catholicos Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia announced on Monday that the Cilician Catholicosate will be submitting the legal case for the return of the Sis Catholicosate to the European Court of Human Rights on December 6.

“Tomorrow, the sixth of December will be an important day for the Armenian people in general and the Armenian church in particular,” Catholicos Aram I announced in a live video address from the current seat of the Catholicosate in Antelias, Lebanon.

The Catholicos said that the decision was made after Turkey’s constitutional court denied the request of the Catholicosate.

“This is the first legal action taken against Turkey after the Armenian Genocide of 1915. This legal action is the result of a long and serious reflection, consultation, and study, and is based on the provisions of international law, including the decisions of the Lausanne Conference of 1932 pertaining to the minorities living within the boundaries of the Republic of Turkey,” Catholicos Aram said in his December 5 address.

The Catholicos first announced that the Cilician See was preparing to initiate legal claims against Turkey to regain ownership of the historic headquarters of the Catholicosate of Sis back in September 2014.

On April 28, 2015, the Catholicosate of Cilicia submitted a brief to the Constitutional Court in Turkey requesting the return of its historic spiritual center in Sis.

The Catholicosate’s St. Sophia church and monastery, and their surrounding lands, are located in the city of Kozan, in the Adana Province of the present-day Republic of Turkey. The headquarters, a center of Armenian religious life for more than seven centuries, was confiscated by the Turkish Government during the Armenian Genocide.

Below is the Aram I’s English address as transcribed by the Armenian Weekly.

***

Tomorrow, the sixth of December, will be an important day for the Armenian people in general and the Armenian church in particular.

The lawsuit demanding the return of the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia in Sis will be formally submitted to the European Court of Human Rights. In fact, this is the first legal action taken against Turkey after the Armenian Genocide of 1915. This legal action is the result of a long and serious reflection, consultation, and study, and is based on the provisions of international law, including the decisions of the Lausanne Conference of 1932 pertaining to the minorities living within the boundaries of the Republic of Turkey.

This is a very important action—legal action—taken by the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia. In fact, for a hundred years, we laid the emphasis in our continuous efforts, within the framework of the Armenian cause, on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. I believe that this is the time that we move from the stage of recognition to reparation, of course, without undermining the pivotal importance of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

I do believe that this is the high time, and, in fact, our legitimate right and sacred obligation, to claim the restoration of the ownership of the centuries old seat of the Catholicoasate in Sis. We should not forget and the international community should know that besides the one and a half million victims of the Armenian Genocide, thousands of Armenian churches, monasteries, community and church properties, including the individual properties, were confiscated by the Turkish authorities. Furthermore, 48 hours were given to the Catholicos Sahak of Cilicia to leave the premises of the Catholicosate with his parishes.

These are not fictions; they are facts of history. And we never forget these painful experiences of our people a hundred years ago. And it goes without saying, that forceful confiscation of properties is against international law.

Tomorrow, in Brussels, a press conference will take place with the participation of four members of our legal team. And through this press conference, our representatives will explain the various stages and dimensions, and expectations pertaining to this lawsuit.

Dear fellow Armenians,

The Armenian cause is the case of justice. It is the cause of violations of human rights. It is the cause of our people. We never forget the Armenian Genocide.

Recognition and reparation: this is our clear and firm position as a people and a church.

Therefore, it is my firm expectation that our people will continue to support all actions, initiatives, and programs that are aimed at the restoration of justice.

Justice—we want justice from the international community. That is the clear and firm position of our people.

May God bless you all.

Diaspora Armenians to observe parliamentary elections in Armenia
05 Dec 2016

Thousands of Diaspora Armenians have joined the “Justice Within Armenia” initiative launched on September 21, famous Canadian Armenian actress Arsine Khanjyan told reporters in Yerevan today.

The Diaspora Armenians have set up an observervation mission for the sake of democracy, justice and transparent elections. The group will have a practical participation in the parliamentary elections next year.

“Armenia’s independence was an important achievement, gift and a dream come true for Diaspora Armenians, but we, as individuals, were unable to make our contribution at the time,” Arsine Khanjyan said.

“However, we have always lived with the consciousness to support Armenia, to help the country rise not only in the cultural field, but also develop as an independent, sovereign and democratic state,” she added.

She noted, however, that the situation is getting more and more troublesome, and this has caused concern among Diaspora Armenians and served as a basis for the “Justice Within Armenia” initiative.

“Our young soldiers’ endless love for the Motherland made us reassess our views and steps. The present and future of Armenia is now measured by the life of those guys, the state they defended should be worth their endless love,” Khanjyan said.

According to her, the July events (the seizure of a police headquarters) alerted that urgent changed are needed and signaled that Diasporas Armenians should have a practical participation.

Actor Hrant Tokhatyan has joined the initiative from Armenia. Speaking to reporters today, he said “the unity of concerned individuals will always benefit Armenia.”

Speaking through Skype, System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian expressed concern over the split among Diaspora Armenians and the Motherland.”

According to Canadian Armenian filmmaker Atom Egoyan, the Diaspora should realize its responsibility and the role it can play in Armenia. “This year’s events showed that the Diaspora should have a practical participation, e.g. on justice-related issues, including elections,” he said.

The Diaspora Armenians plan to arrive in Armenia next spring to observe the parliamentary elections in the country.

Turkish Bosphorus tunnel to be named after Armenian Genocide perpetrators
06 Dec 2016

The tunnel that will cross the Bosphorus Strait in Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul, is set to be named after a perpetrator of the Armenian, Greek and Assyrian genocides, or someone responsible for the death of thousands of Armenians and Bulgarians.

The competing names according to CNN Turk are between Kemal Ataturk, the first President of the Turkish Republic, and Abdul Hamid, the last Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Almasdarnews reports.

CNN Turk have also revealed that Ataturk is winning the poll so far.

Ataturk was partially responsible for the genocide of millions of Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians that began during the First World War.

Abdul Hamid, who struggled to maintain a fracturing empire, saw a pogrom against thousands of Armenians and Bulgarians.

Obama’s UN envoy refers to 1915 events as 'genocide'

U.S. President Barack Obama's UN envoy Samantha Power referred to the
1915 events as 'genocide' on Tuesday, in a move very likely to
infuriate Turkey.

The term has long been taboo for U.S. officials, including President
Barack Obama, who have instead talked of historical tragedy. But
Obama's U.N. ambassador last week went further than her boss,
describing the event as genocide. In a speech hailing the work of
Holocaust survivor and Nobel peace laureate Elie Wiesel, Samantha
Power lamented the injustices that continue to this day. Among these,
she listed: "Genocide denial against the Armenians." Power didn't
elaborate.

From Turkey's perspective, the deaths of Armenians in eastern Anatolia
in 1915 occurred after some Armenian nationalists sided with the
invading Russians and revolted against Ottoman forces. A subsequent
relocation of Armenians resulted in numerous casualties. Turkey
describes the events of 1915 as a tragedy for both sides. Ankara has
repeatedly proposed the creation of a joint commission of historians
from Turkey and Armenia, along with international experts, to tackle
the issue.

Even though President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan challenged Armenian
authorities to form a joint history commission to investigate the
incidents and pledged to accept any decision that will come out, his
counterpart and other officials remained silent.

When he first ran for president, Obama promised he would recognize the
killings as genocide if elected. But he has repeatedly stopped short
of doing so. Marking Armenian Remembrance Day in April, Obama called
the 1915 events "a tragedy that must not be repeated." Before entering
government, the second highest ranking diplomat of the United States,
Power was a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who wrote extensively
about America's responses to the 1915 events. Officials say she has
lobbied hard behind the scenes for Obama to formally recognize the
atrocities as "genocide."

Former President Ronald Reagan also referred to the 1915 events as
"genocide of the Armenians" in 1981. But since then, presidents have
avoided such language.

Why do US Jews celebrate Hanukkah with Azerbaijani Embassy?
06.12.2016

The Conference of the US major Jewish organizations’ representatives will celebrate Chanukah together with the Azerbaijani Embassy in Washington. As Haaretz reports, the event will be held on December 14 at the Trump International Hotel in Washington. This decision has provoked various reactions in the Jewish community.

Firstly, it leaves an impression of heaping upon adulation for the new elect president. Secondly, it is unclear why the US Jewish community is organizing an event with an embassy of a Muslim country to celebrate their holiday. The author explains it, as of prevailing close relations between Israeli and Azerbaijani governments. " Azerbaijan became Israel’s largest oil supplier several years ago and in turn purchased large amounts of Israeli military hardware.”

The article notes, that the Azerbaijani government spends millions to promote its interests in Washington D.C. and advice its image. However, it gets regularly criticized for human rights’ violations by international NGOs.

In addition, it is planned open a Trump International Hotel in Baku, the construction of which, according to the Associated Press, has been postponed because of "economic reasons."

** FATHER FRANK’S RANTS Rant Number 705 6 December 16 TRUMP’S CALL

SURPRISE CALL FROM DONALD TRUMP. WANTED ME TO BE HIS FAITH ADVISER. HERE IS WHAT I TOLD HIM.
------------------------------------------------------------

Like Pope Francis, Donald Trump is a maverick. Like the Pope he often phones up people directly, bypassing official channels. Last night he called me. ‘Father Frank, I have heard much about you. Would you be willing to be my religious adviser?’
‘Affirmative’, I gleefully responded. Here is a summary of my impromptu recommendations.

First, Islam. Donald, during your electoral campaign you have rubbed up Muslims – 1.6 billion of them - the wrong way. Start a new chapter. You have already begun, by calling Pakistan ‘a fantastic country’. Now go one better.  Phone the Aga Khan, Karim. Arrange a meeting. As Imam, supreme spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims – indeed, as a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad - Karim is a man to get on your side. It will signal your willingness to be nice to the religion of the Crescent. As leader of his people, Karim has the right to interpret the Qur’an. He can speak authoritatively on matters of the Islamic faith. Also, the Aga Khan is a wealthy business magnate, like you. He is into education, reform, philanthropy and Islamic art – a dream ally to have. You will understand each other well, insh’allah. Oh, yes, Karim also happens to be British.(Somewhat more impressive figure than crabby Nigel Farage, methinks.) So you’ll catch two birds with one stone.  It will send a
message to the Brits: you do care about that ‘special relationship’ Britain feels so touchingly sensitive about. Smart move, eh?

Second, Israel-Palestine conflict. ‘I’d love to make peace between Israel and the Palestinians’, you said after the elections. And I am encouraged by your warning the Republican Friends of Israel concerning Jerusalem as the presumed capital of the Jewish state: ‘That should not be assumed before negotiations start between the two sides.’ Thought that was both clever and right. And you spoke of brokering a deal. Suitable language for a businessman. They say you have your son-in-law, Jared Kushner, already earmarked for the job. I suggest he should be accompanied by Professor Bernard Wasserstein, a Jewish-American. The author of ‘Israelis and Palestinians: Why do they fight? Can they stop?’ A short book shot through with insight and practical wisdom. Maybe not another Henry Kissinger but very close to it, Bernard Wasserstein is the one to consult, believe you me. He holds the key…

Of course, some opine that the task of sorting out the Middle East quagmire is above mere mortals. Obama, at the start of his ill-fated Presidency, in his famous Cairo speech quoted the Qur’an three times, postured as a friend of Islam and Muslims naively bought it. Alas, he did bugger all. Netanyahu twisted him around his little finger. (To be fair, a wag said that even Moses, Muhammad and Jesus come back to earth would find solving the Israel-Palestine conflict a bit too much.) Well, here is a mega-challenge for the Donald. A labour worthy of a Hercules. Fr Frank has confidence in you. Something, someone – the Holy Spirit? – tells me that you, only you can do it. Go for it! Prove you are the man Providence has chosen to achieve the impossible. Your spiteful enemies will bite the dust and your place in history will be assured. Kosher, no?

Russia. Piece of cake. Priestly advice is superfluous. You get on with Putin like a house on fire. Another, more benign and fair Yalta should be in the offing. But Putin is no Stalin, thank God. And you are shrewder and healthier than clapped-out, moribund F.D. Roosevelt. Just make sure to get sentimental with Vladimir. Rousskies are sentimental people. Having once loved one…I know all about it.

China. Having a drink the other day with a Chinese friend in Knightsbridge’s trendy Buddha Bar I raised the question: ‘Trump’s China policy: what’s to be done?’ ‘Zen’ he replied, jocularly. But many a true thing is spoken in jest. Zen shows the way. You see, Donald, you are a Zen type. Like a Zen master you act unpredictably. The liberal elites think that means you are mercurial, that you are an amateur, you don’t know your way around. But a Zen master cannot be predicted because he does not act according to pre-established, norms and ways of thought. He defies mental straightjackets. Yet he knows lethally well what is doing… A Zen master succeeds because he makes manifest the power of the Buddha, the Enlightened One. So you called Taiwan’s leader, against all conventions. By acting against diplomatic pseudo-wisdom you evinced a superior, Zen-like wisdom. (I speak as a formed Zen chap myself…) You taught the Communist regime a lesson. You are not afraid of them, unlike the
ludicrous Obumble. Maybe you should appoint Chuck Norris, of ‘Walker Texas Ranger’ fame, as ambassador to Beijing. You are on a winner, Donald!

As to Europe. Too many and diverse nations to prescribe about, only let me plea for my native, beautiful and chaotic homeland. Mr President Elect, an Italian discovered America and another Italian bestowed his name on it, so please, do help poor Italy!

‘And for you, what can I do for you personally, Fr Frank?’ Trump asked. ‘What would you like from me?’ ‘Nothing’, I replied. Then, on reflection, I added: ‘Only glory. The glory of having proffered successful advice on how to befriend Muslims and fix the Middle East.’

'Deconstructing Donald'

Trump Inc 's record of finishing projects and picking partners
is patchy - a big development project in Baku, the capital
of Azerbaijan, has stalled for example.
In the same analysis, it mentions that a court case
verdict in China has unexpectedly gone Trump's
way after he was elected to be the next US president.

Worrying.

President Ilham Aliyev: April battles are our glorious history
3 December 2016

Trend:

“The April battles are our glorious history,” said President Ilham
Aliyev as he met with representatives of general public as part of his
visit to Tartar. The head of state praised heroism of the Azerbaijani
Army and Azerbaijani citizens during the April battles. The President
noted that the Azerbaijani Army gained military victory as they
repulsed the attack of the enemy. By conducting counterattack
operation from unfavorable positions, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces
liberated the territory of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous
Region - present Aghdere region, as well as large territories in the
direction of Jabrayil, Fuzuli from the occupation.

“For many years Armenia has been spreading lies and myths about its
army, suggesting that it allegedly has an invincible army. The April
fighting showed which army is actually invincible. The Azerbaijani
army is invincible.”

The President said that Azerbaijan not only showed its strength in
these battles and once again proved to the enemy and world that, we
will never reconcile with the current situation. “Nagorno-Karabakh is
our historic land. So are Shusha, Khankendi and other lands, which
remained under the occupation.”

“Our historical geography was very wide,” President Ilham Aliyev
said. The head of state added that Yerevan, Goyche and Zangazur
are the historical lands of Azerbaijan.

Dink case judge detained over Gülen probe
Dec 2 2016
ISTANBUL

One of the judges who is trying 35 suspects for the murder of
Armenian-Turkish journalistHrant Dink in 2007 was detained on Dec. 2
on accusations that he is tied to the Gülenist organization.

Bünyamin Karakaş, who did not attend on Dec. 2 hearing, was
apprehended by police teams while he was in his room at the Istanbul
courthouse. The detention came during a recess in the hearing in which
suspect Ramazan Akyürek was in the dock.

The court, gathering after the short break, decided to adjourn its
meeting for two hours due to Karakaş’s detention.

Karakaş was among 192 judges and prosecutors who were sought for
detention as part of a probe into Gülenists opened by Ankara
prosecutors on Dec. 1.

Some 55 of the legal personnel were serving in Istanbul.

A total of 191 judges and prosecutors out of the 192 were suspended
as part of the investigation, said a judicial source.

No administrative actions were taken against one suspect because he
had retired although he remains on a wanted list.

The suspects were said to be serving at first-degree courts.

To date, more than 3,600 judges and prosecutors have been dismissed
since the July 15 coup attempt that left 248 dead and nearly 2,200
wounded.

The Gülenist organization, led by U.S.-based Islamic preacher
Fethullah Gülen, is accused of orchestrating Turkey’s July 15 coup
plot.

In the Dink case, hearings against former Police Intelligence
Department personnel began on Nov. 28.

Dink was shot dead at the age of 52 in broad daylight outside the
offices of the Turkish-Armenian weekly newspaper Agos in central
Istanbul on Jan. 19, 2007.

Ogün Samast, then a 17-year-old jobless high-school dropout, confessed
to the murder and was sentenced to almost 23 years in jail in 2011.

But the case grew into a wider scandal after it emerged that the
security forces had been aware of a plot to kill Dink but failed to
act.

Expert calls for more serious anti-poaching measures
04.12.16

Bardukh Gabrielyan, Director of the Institute of Hydroecology and Ichthyology, Academy of Sciences of Armenia, welcomes the decision banning fishing in Lake Sevan December 1 to 25.

Ensuring application of the ban is the most important thing to do now.

“But on December 2 I saw fish on sold by shops. How can they sell fish if the decision was made on December 1? It means the decision remain on paper, without any concrete measures taken,” Mr Gabrielyan said in an interview with Tert.am.

He welcomes construction of fisheries that meet the highest standards. However, without proper anti-poaching measures, no results can be expected.

“On the one hand, we are developing fishery, on the other hand we do not ensure satisfactory anti-poaching measures,” Mr Gabrielyan said.

He does not accept the arguments that fishing is the only means of living for the local population. Rather, a month’s interval will prove much more beneficial to the people.

With respect to Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan’s latest visit to Gegharkunik, Mr Gabrielyan said:

“It is commendable that the premier has paid his attention to the sector, but professional opinions should be listened to.”

Ilham Aliyev: Azerbaijanis to return to historical lands
4 December 2016

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that the country does not eye
present day territory of the Republic of Armenia.

“We have no intention to return either Iravan or Mehri or Gorus
through militarily,” said President Aliyev as he met with
representatives of the general public as part of his visit to the
frontline district of Tartar.

“But I am confident that the time will come and we, Azerbaijanis, will
return to all our historical lands,” he added.

“We will achieve this through conducting a consistent policy,
peacefully,’ the president said. “All objective factors demonstrate
that this day will come. We should just work to hasten that day. How
should we do it? We should be stronger.”

The president said international law has almost been a fiasco.

“Power is the main factor now,” the president said. “This is the
reality, and we live in this real world. So we must be more powerful,
we must build a stronger army.”

“Our economy must grow stronger,” the president said. “Our economy
must develop at a more rapid pace. Our development must speed up. Our
population has increased and will continue to increase even in the
years of crisis.”

“In a year or two Azerbaijan`s population will reach 10 million,” the
president said. “This is a stable tendency, and the growth will be
even bigger in the years ahead.”

President Aliyev also said that the Armenian population is decreasing,
which, he added, is caused by both natural reasons, migration,
hopelessness, despair, arbitrariness.

He said that in fact the incumbent fascist regime in Armenia created
unbearable conditions in the country.

“Therefore population in this country will continue to decrease,
people will leave the country as they are doing now,” he added.

Diaspora Armenians face the threat of assimilation
December 2,2016

The number of Armenian communities in the Middle East has been declining in the last 30 years.

President of Armenian Benevolent General Union (ABGU) Perch Sedrakyan says 80 percent of them have either dispersed or become estranged from their Armenian roots.

“The new generation walks away from their identity and roots. This is a serious concern. New emigrants preserve their national identity for at least 1-2 generations whereas those who settle in the United States, Europe and Russia lose their identity altogether,” Perch Sedrakyan said during a press conference organized within the framework of AGBU 110th anniversary celebrations.

He stressed that if the Diaspora weakens it will lose its importance and cannot support the homeland.

“If we do not take measures in the next 5-10 years and bring part of them closer to their roots, they will coalesce with other nations,” Perch Sedrakyan stressed.

The ABGU President says the strongest anchor is having a powerful country.

“Our main concern is to strengthen the economic situation in Armenia. We need to have a powerful country to instill pride in the coming generations. Our efforts in the next years should be directed towards our homeland,” he added.

I disagree, The Strong anchor is to have a Church within the community helping those who have become lost to that community!!! Further more, external forces may have a lot to do with their plight!

Newspaper: Natural gas pipeline reaching Armenia to be sold to Azerbaijan company?

01.12.2016
YEREVAN. – Prime Minister of Georgia, Giorgi Kvirikashvili, announced that 25 percent of the shares of Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation could be sold on the stock exchange. The danger here is that the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has already voiced about its plan to completely purchase the natural gas pipeline reaching Armenia, reported Zhoghovurd newspaper of Armenia.

“That is, the gas pipeline, which is of strategic, vital importance for our country, might soon become a property of the Azerbaijanis, who, due to a fallen mood, could close the gas valve from time to time, and we [Armenia] will be deprived of gas supply.

“Zhoghovurd daily managed to talk on this matter with MP of the Parliament of Georgia, David Chichinadze. The latter explained that the sales process itself has not started.

‘“The Azerbaijani company does not have any gas, transport corridor at us [i.e. in Georgia], and therefore I believe that there is little such likelihood,’ the Georgian MP gave hope,” wrote Zhoghovurd.

Sebahat Tuncel has numerously made statements in favor of recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

Back in 2014, being a lawmaker, Tuncel presented a bill to the Turkish Parliament which suggested President Erdogan to apologize to the Armenian people for the Armenian Genocide. The bill suggested announcing April 24 a mourning day, as well as make material and moral compensations.

Oganesson: Element named after Armenian scientist added to periodic table
01 Dec 2016

Oganesson (Og) – the element named after Russian Armenian scholar Yuri Oganessian has been added to Mendeleev’s periodical table.

On 28 November 2016, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) approved the name and symbols for four elements: nihonium (Nh), moscovium (Mc), tennessine (Ts), and oganesson (Og), respectively for element 113, 115, 117, and 118.

In line with the tradition of honoring a scientist, the name oganesson and symbol Og for element 118 was proposed by the collaborating teams of discoverers at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna (Russia) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (USA) and recognizes Professor Yuri Oganessian (born 1933) for his pioneering contributions to transactinoid elements research.

His many achievements include the discovery of superheavy elements and significant advances in the nuclear physics of superheavy nuclei including experimental evidence for the “island of stability.”

Man Utd beat West Ham 4-1: Mkhitaryan named Man of the Match
01 Dec 2016

Manchester Uited set up an EFL Cup semi-final clash against Hull with a deserved 4-1 victory over West Ham.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial both scored braces as United cruised into the last four at Old Trafford.

Ashley Fletcher gave the visitor’s hope 10 minutes before the break, pouncing on David De Gea’s error to make the score 1-1.

Armenia international Henrikh Mkhitaryan was a constant menace to the West Ham defence, setting up a goal apiece for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial.

Portuguese boss was clearly pleased with his efforts against a strong West Ham side.

“I’m so happy because today was against a Premier League team with Premier League qualities with Premier League characteristics,” Mourinho said.

Mkhitaryan at home on the biggest stage
Dec 1 2016

In a revealing interview with The Players' Tribune , Manchester United's Henrikh Mkhitaryan has opened up on why his late father Hamlet continues to be his inspiration.

The Armenia captain tragically lost his dad when only seven years old due to a brain tumour and it naturally had a profound effect on his childhood. By somehow summoning up the strength to follow in his father's footsteps, he has not only emulated Hamlet's achievement of representing his country but is now appearing for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"When you walk onto the pitch at Old Trafford, it is not just a pitch, it is a stage," the attacking midfielder said. "If my father could see me on that stage, I think he would be very proud.

"I was always kind of chasing him and I think, even though he’s not here, he helped me to get to this place. If he was still alive, maybe I would be a lawyer or a doctor right now. Instead, I am a footballer.

"The year after my father died, I started football training," he added. "He was the drive for me, he was my idol. I said to myself, I have to run just like him. I have to shoot just like him.

"By the time I was 10 years old, my entire life was football. Training, reading, watching, even playing football on PlayStation . I was totally focused on it. I especially loved the creative players — the maestros. I always wanted to play like [Zinedine] Zidane, Kaká and Hamlet. (Pretty good company for my father)."

The decision to head to Brazil as a 13-year-old to train with Sao Paulo for four months must have been an extraordinarily difficult one to take but it helped broaden the youngster's horizons and develop his playing style.

"That was one of the most interesting times of my life, because I was a very shy kid from Armenia who didn’t speak any Portuguese," he admitted. "But I didn’t care at all because, to me, I was getting to go to football paradise.

"I dreamed of being like Kaká, and Brazil was the home of that creative style, which the Brazilians call ginga . That time was very important to me, because it shaped my style as a player. When I returned to Armenia after four months in Brazil, I was still quite skinny and weak, but I had technique and skill. I was feeling very free on the pitch. I was feeling like the Armenian Ronaldinho. (Ha ha ha ha. No, I’m joking)."

Thankfully, United's fans are now able to enjoy the 'Armenian Ronaldinho' after narrowly failing to sign the Brazilian star during Sir Alex Ferguson's time in charge. The Old Trafford faithful have had to be patient but are clearly now falling in love with the summer signing from Borussia Dortmund.

"I knew it would be a challenge to leave a good situation at Dortmund and succeed at United," he said. "But I did not want to sit in my chair as an old man and have any regrets. I was ready to move.

"When the deal was done and dusted, I sat down to sign the contract with United and that’s when it hit me. That’s when I realised that this big move to the Premier League was really happening.

"I will never forget that moment, nor will I forget the time I put on the red Manchester United shirt before my first training session with the club. It made me feel so happy and proud about what I had achieved in my career.

"At the beginning of this season at United, I suffered an injury and have not had many chances to play. It would be fair to say that the start of my life in Manchester was not perfect. But there have been many other times when I’ve had setbacks, and I have never given up. I will continue working every day so that I can help the team succeed."

Having overcome incredible adversity in the past, there is every reason to expect Mkhitaryan to continue achieving his goals and become a firm favourite at United.
