Rebels Retreat from Aleppo as Armenians Mark ‘End of Nightmare’
13/12/16

ALEPPO, Syria—Syrian rebel officials agreed to a cease-fire on Tuesday effectively turning over control of Aleppo to the government, in what many see as the besieged city’s liberation.

“The liberation of Aleppo put an end to the nightmare facing the Armenian community and the fear of losing relatives. The everyday shelling has ceased, but many complications still remain,” said Zarmig Boghigian, the editor-in-chief of the Aleppo-based Kantsasar weekly on her Facebook page.

“While we are enthusiastic about the recent developments, we have to remain realistic to not confuse people,” said Boghigian who added that part of the realism is to recognize that the five-year war in Syria was not yet over.

She said that among the complications facing all citizens of Aleppo is the lack of basic staples and services such as electricity. Boghigian added that municipal officials were working toward restoring services and “giving hope to the people.”

In a similar post on Monday, Boghigian said that some Aleppo Armenians were returning to their homes, but a complete re-population was still premature.

“Those who have relatives and friends have decided to return, but we do not have assurances that all can be back now. The city is only now recovering, with lots of parts still lying in ruins,” said Boghigian

“But safety is a priority, for which there are no guarantees,” said Boghigian ahead of Tuesday’s announcement of the rebels’ retreat.

Rebel resistance in Syria’s Aleppo ended on Tuesday after years of fighting and months of bitter siege and bombardment that culminated in a bloody collapse of their defenses this week, as insurgents agreed to withdraw in a ceasefire, reported Reuters on Tuesday.

Rebel officials said fighting would end on Tuesday evening and insurgents and the civilians who have been trapped in the tiny pocket of territory they hold in Aleppo would leave the city for opposition-held areas of the countryside to the west.

News of the deal was confirmed by Russia’s U.N. envoy.

“My latest information is that they indeed have an arrangement achieved on the ground that the fighters are going to leave the city,” Russian U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters. It could happen “within hours maybe,” he said, according to Reuters.

A surrender or withdrawal of the rebels from Aleppo would mean the end of the rebellion in the city, Syria’s largest until the outbreak of war after mass protests in 2011.

By finally dousing the last embers of resistance burning in Aleppo, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s military coalition of the army, Russian air power and Iran-backed militias will have delivered him his biggest battlefield victory of the war.

Netanyahu Hails Baku Ties as ‘Beacon of Jewish-Muslim Coexistence’
13/12/16
BY ARA KHACHATOURIAN

Aliyev hails $5 billion weapons purchase from Israel

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday has hailed cooperation with Azerbaijan as a beacon of Jewish and Muslim coexistence during his visit to Baku, which some in Israel are calling “historic.” Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev cited his country’s purchase of almost $5 billion in weapons as a sign of that truly unholy “coexistence.”

“The world sees so much intolerance and darkness, this [Tel Aviv Baku cooperation] is an example of how the Muslim-Jewish relationship can and should be everywhere,” Netanyahu was quoted by the Times of Israel as saying during the first leg of his trip to Muslim nations in an effort to bolster security and diplomatic ties.

During the same press conference at Baku’s Zagulba Palace, Aliyev took the opportunity to boast about the ongoing military cooperation with Israel and the purchase of those weapons, which were used during Azerbaijan’s aggressive attack on Karabakh last April.

“To give you one figure to illustrate how broad this cooperation is, so far the contracts between Azerbaijani and Israeli companies with respect to purchasing of defense equipment is close to $5 billion. To be more precise, $4.85 billion,” said Aliyev who acknowledged that Baku was open to further weapons purchases from Tel Aviv.

With a dowry of $5 billion in weapons, Netanyahu’s visit to Baku consummated that marriage and only time will tell what menacing fruits it will bear.

Netanyahu, whose government has yet to recognize the crime of Genocide against the Armenians, has opted to align himself– and the Jewish State—with another a criminal regime whose actions thus far have been nothing but barbaric.

The more than 100 soldiers and civilians in Artsakh who were brutally killed when Azerbaijan launched its attack in April seem to have been the beneficiaries of Netanyahu’s so-called “Jewish-Muslim coexistence.”

Simply put, Netanyahu and Israel have blood on their hands.

Armenian Parliament Debates Anti-Corruption Bill
Sisak Gabrielian
December 14, 201

The Armenian parliament began debating on Wednesday a government bill
that would criminalize "illegal enrichment" of high-ranking state
officials.

The amendments to Armenia's Criminal Code were drafted by the Justice
Ministry and approved by Prime Minister Karen Karapetian's cabinet
last month. They would apply to some 600 officials, including
ministers and judges, who are legally obliged to declare their assets
to a special state commission.

The officials would have to substantiate the origin of their assets if
those exceed their annual salaries by at least 5 million drams
($10,500). They would risk up to 6 six years in prison in case of
failing to do so.

Presenting the bill to lawmakers, Justice Minister Arpine Hovannisian
said it would reduce government corruption. Opposition deputies were
unconvinced, however.

In particular, Hovannes Markarian of the Orinats Yerkir party recently
renamed Armenian Revival complained that the bill will have no
retroactive effect. "They have already plundered [the state] and
enriched themselves," he said. "There is nothing left anymore."

Hovannisian argued that Armenia's constitution forbids retroactive
enforcement of punitive laws.

Naira Zohrabian, the leader of the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK),
also claimed that the draft amendments would make no difference. "Look
at the income declarations of many National Assembly deputies and
ministers," she said. "They attribute their incomes to loans
[supposedly extended by them to other individuals.]"

Even Eduard Sharmazanov, the deputy parliament speaker representing
the ruling Republican Party (HHK), questioned the effectiveness of the
proposed measures. He argued many officials register their expensive
properties in their relatives' names.

Many senior Armenian officials are believed to be well-to-do
individuals despite their relatively modest salaries. It is not
uncommon for them to own businesses through their relatives or
cronies.

The veracity of their income declarations filed with the State
Commission for the Ethics of High-Ranking Officials has long been
questioned by anti-corruption activists and media. Some officials have
attributed their and their relatives' wealth to lavish financial
"gifts" received from other individuals.

Karapetian's cabinet pledged to criminalize "illegal enrichment" in
its policy program approved by the National Assembly in October. The
program promises "more efforts to eliminate the biggest obstacle to
the development of the state: favoritism, embezzlements, bribery and
other manifestations of corruption."

Fuel Importer Said To Lament Increased Competition
December 14, 2016

One of Armenia's leading corporate taxpayers reportedly complained
about increased competition in the hitherto lucrative business of fuel
imports to the country at a meeting with Prime Minister Karen
Karapetian on Wednesday.

Karapetian met with the top executives of ten large Armenian companies
to discuss his government's declared efforts to improve the domestic
investment climate, including through a reform of tax
administration. A government statement said he inquired about
"obstacles" encountered by them in their dealings with tax authorities
and other state bodies.

The business executives spoke about ways of simplifying taxation and
customs procedures and, in that regard, complained of excessive
advance payments collected from them by the State Revenue
Committee. Some of them also brought up the issue of business
competition, according to the statement.

"In response to a remark that the largest fuel-importing companies are
making zero profits as a result of tighter competition in the diesel
fuel market, Prime Minister Karapetian pointed that the competitive
environment will regulate itself," added the statement.

It did not specify who lamented the increased number of players in the
business. Photographs released by Karapetian's press service showed
that there was at least one fuel tycoon among the participants of the
meeting: Barsegh Beglarian.

Beglarian's company called Flash is one of a handful of firms that
have long dominated diesel and petrol imports. They are owned by
government-linked individuals.

Karapetian vowed to improve the business environment and embark on
other economic reforms shortly after he was appointed prime minister
in September. He said last month that a new company has started
importing fuel to Armenia. He claimed that "every citizen of Armenia
can import any product without a hurdle."

Armenia’s Russia problem
By Christina Gathman
December 13, 2016
The prevalence of domestic corruption is among Armenia’s worst kept secrets. This, coupled with the country’s historically close relationship with Russia, explains the heavy handed influence Russia was able to exert over the Armenian judiciary in the Yukos CIS trials. Auspiciously absent from any discussion surrounding the nature of this relationship, however, is an understanding of the level of economic control Moscow exerts over the country.

Russia exerts this control not simply through the bilateral trade relationship or regional organizations, but also through sweeping ownership by Russian state-owned enterprises (SOEs) of strategic Armenian assets throughout the country's energy, mining, transportation, telecommunications and banking sectors. This level of strategic control transcends economics and, within Armenia, translates to significant Russian political leverage. In Armenia’s post-independence period, debt-for-asset swaps, many of which were negotiated personally by now-President Serzh Sargsyan, turned over critical assets to Russian SOEs in exchange for debt relief. Many top Armenian government officials, not to mention the Armenian public, were left in the dark as these backroom deals were executed.

Since, Russian companies have used various tactics, including debt-for-asset swaps, or the offer of discounts on natural gas prices, to gain economic concessions. As recently as August, Armenia was reportedly mulling the sale of the Yerevan Power Plant to Gazprom (indebted to the company for $52.3 million).

Breaking it down sector by sector, the level of control by Russian state-owned companies is staggering. The country’s energy sector, in particular, is inordinately dependent on Russian state owned, or state linked, enterprises. These companies own or operate an array of power generating assets and chemical plants in the country. Those such assets that remain in Armenian government hands, like the Metsamor nuclear power plant, often still depend entirely on Russian fuel. Many of Armenia’s thermal power plants, for example, are powered with natural gas, the majority (80%) of which comes from Russia and passes through a distribution system fully controlled by Gazprom (via Gazprom Armenia). While the country’s sources of oil imports are more diversified, all oil products are moved via the country’s railway system, which is managed and operated Russian Railways. This Russian economic dominance extends to other of Armenia’s strategic sectors, including mining, banking and telecommunications.

Even in the more traditional soft power realm, Russia holds significant sway over the Armenian public. Roughly 49% rely on Russian television as their daily news source, and just 16% of Armenians watch no Russian television news at all.

Outside of Armenia proper is a diaspora community of roughly 2.3 million, the majority of which resides in Russia. Keeping in mind that Armenia itself is home to just 2.9 million - one-third of whom live in poverty - the country’s inordinate dependence on remittances is blatant. Between 2010 and 2014, remittances constituted roughly 19% of Armenia’s total GDP, and those originating from Russia comprise some 70% of the total.

The question of how exactly this economic dominance translates into political control is not easy to answer, but it starts with the presence of oligarchs friendly to Moscow, who themselves control certain of the country’s most lucrative businesses. Made up of a circle of roughly forty individuals, included amongst the country’s oligarchs are members of the major political parties and Armenian presidents. The deals struck with Russian companies operating in the country serve often to enrich the oligarchs who facilitate the deals or partner with these firms. Thus, Moscow is often able to force Yerevan to make political or economic decisions that fall in line with Moscow’s broader agenda (for example the country’s joining of the Eurasian Economic Union).

There is no clearer recent example of Moscow’s close ties to the Armenian oligarchic class than that of newly appointed Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan, who led Gazprom Armenia for some time and was later Vice President of Gazprombank. Even if Karapetyan’s appointment is simply a placeholder until the April 2017 elections, it speaks volumes symbolically. The Prime Minister’s brother, Samvel Karapetyan, heads Tashir Group, which purchased Armenian Electric Networks, which controls the country’s power grid, from Russia’s Inter RAO following the Electric Yerevan protests.

Due in large part to these strong economic ties, Armenia is, in effect, trapped in Moscow’s strategic orbit, despite growing public frustration with Russia. Moscow’s continued defense sales to Azerbaijan continue to be a thorn in the side of Armenia, though the government has found itself able to do little about it. Likewise, Western assistance dedicated to enhancing the country’s democratic institutions, including the recently publicized effort to provide financial support for a new voting process, will not be enough to counter Moscow’s interest in maintaining the status quo. Without accounting for the economic role of Russia in Armenia, any efforts to enhance the country’s democratic institutions will largely fall flat.

The role of the Armenians in the Byzantine Empire has been often understated, and in some cases entirely ignored. The most common interpretation of Byzantium as a manifestation of Medieval Hellenism has meant no room for the Armenian element within the Byzantine state to be recognised. Toby Bromige has been conducting a revisionist work to restore the Armenian element in Byzantium to its rightful state. In English. This is a GB Russia event and all are welcome .

Fidel Castro’s Blood in Armenia
December 7, 2016

Fidel Castro, one of the most influential men of the 20th century, has died, but a part of him still lives in the veins of an Armenian citizen. The Cuban revolutionary donated his blood to a victim of the Spitak earthquake in December 1988 . Sputnik tells the story.

December 7, 2016 marks the 28th anniversary of the Spitak earthquake. Sputnik Armenia columnist, Dmitri Pisarenko, in a recent article, recalls the story of a survivor of this terrible earthquake, whose life was saved thanks to the Cuban leader.

“I do not remember well, but in the late 1990s, or perhaps in the early 2000s, I heard an interesting story from the local press about a young woman from the city of Gyumri. My cameraman Oganés Akopian and I went to visit her to do a report for NTV (Russian TV), with which we collaborated at the time,” the journalist recalled. The story she told the journalists was very surprising as well as exciting.

Days after the catastrophe, which destroyed the city of Gyumri, and in the ruins of one of the buildings of the city, the rescue teams found this woman in critical condition. Doctors had to amputate one leg. To make matters worse, she needed a blood transfusion to survive.

After the surgery, she began to recover. The doctors informed her that the bag of blood she had received had the name of Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz on it. Years after the tragedy, during the interview, she remembered with a smile the jokes of her relatives about their ‘blood ties’ with the commander. As reported by the columnist, this lady even joked that once she examined herself closely in a mirror to see if she had a beard like Fidel.

“With the death of the revolutionary, an entire era is gone, but his blood continues to give life to a person,” Pisarenko concludes in his article.

The 7.2-magnitude Spitak earthquake is considered to be one of the most destructive in the history of mankind. The earthquake reduced the city of Spitak to ashes, the second largest city in Armenia, and damaged the locality of Gyumri – Leninakán at the time.

As a result, some 25,000 people lost their lives, 140,000 were injured and half a million were left homeless. All the republics of the USSR participated in the reconstruction of the region. Some 20,000 soldiers and Soviet Army officers, as well as hundreds of volunteers, including foreigners, took part in the rescue operations. In addition, 111 other countries provided humanitarian assistance in the form of equipment, food, drugs and rescue workers.

At that time, a large number of people assisted the Armenian people, from ordinary citizens to leaders of some world powers. One of them was the Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, who donated his blood to the victims. Thousands of Cubans followed suit.

The government of Cuba also sent a group of doctors equipped with the most modern equipment to Armenia. Fidel Castro personally was in charge of the organization of the delivery of aid to the victims of the earthquake.

Sputnik’s team, meanwhile, wants to express its gratitude to all those who helped then the victims of the tragedy. If you worked as a rescuer, volunteer or doctor in the disaster area in 1988, the agency Sputnik calls you to share your memories with us. Send us your stories

Armenia’s external debt cause of concern – economist
08.12.16

The government debt-to-GDP ratio in Armenia has exceeded 50% this year.

Next year, Armenia’s national debt is expected to reach US $5.217bn (45.8% of the GDP), economist Mesrop Arakelyan told Tert.am.

Armenia’s increasing national debt has been a cause of serious concern in recent years. Armenia’s external debt has shown a 3.5-4-fold increase since 2008.

“In terms of US dollars, it increased from about US $1.9 up to US $6bn,” Mr Arakelyan said.

Borrowed funds will mostly be used to reduce the budget deficit.

“Borrowed funds are not used for specific purposes. Rather, they are intended for such budget expenditures as wages, pension and other expenses. No added value has been created. It is like a person borrowing money for family needs,” Mr Arakelyan said.

Next year, over AMD 100bn is expected to be spent on serving Armenia’s national debt, nearly as much as the health and education budget.

“The budget is so small that actual implementation of programs and reforms, which requires funds, imposes restrictions on the government. For example, no rise in wages or pensions is expected next year. Without substantial economic growth, Armenia’s national debt will be served at the cost of other expenditures,” Mr Arakelyan said.

The economist said the concerns grow against the expectations for decreasing foreign investments in 2017.

“The confidence crisis is deepening. No investor, whether a rural farmer or a major international company, favorable conditions for investments, citing corruption, monopolies, as well as the situation in Artsakh [Nagorno-Karabakh] as serious reasons,” he added.

Commenting on the government steps to recover the economy, the economist said they are unlikely to secure progress in the current economic context.

Armenians were donating to charity and social projects more
often than citizens of other CIS countries
December 7

Citizens of Armenia were donating to charity and social projects more often than citizens of other former Soviet republics making the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), although in lesser amounts, Yandex. Money reported, citing the findings of a study. More than 600 non-profit organizations use Yandex.Money tools to receive donations.

According to the study, in the last 12 months Armenian citizens have donated 60 times more money than in the previous 12 months with the number of people willing to help others having surged by more than 20 times.

The average donation was about 1,984 drams. It was less than in other CIS countries: for example, in Russia the average donation size was the equivalent of 5,742 drams, in Kazakhstan – 3,204 drams, in Belarus – 2,518 drams. The largest donation that was made by using Yandex.Money was 1.85 million drams.

The most generous donators live in the capital Yerevan, Gyumri, Hrazdan and Abovyan: On average the largest donations were made by residents of Yerevan – 5,188 drams and the lowest by residents of Hrazdan – 1.221 drams.

Most of the donations - 75% - Armenian users send from the e-wallet, 25% - by using their credit cards. The study involved donations made from 2015 autumn to 2016 autumn and the same period a year earlier. Donators used Yandex.Money wallet, Yandeks.Kassa and yasobe.ruservice. ($ 1 - 481.62 drams).

Mark Toner: I don’t want to get into terminology, 1.5 million Armenians were massacred
07 Dec 2016

“President Obama and his Administration, as have past administrations, have repeatedly mourned and acknowledged that 1.5 million Armenians were massacred or marched to their deaths in the final days of the Ottoman Empire,” Spokesperson for the US Department of State Mark Toner told a daily briefing.

“We also called for a full and frank acknowledgement of the facts of what happened around those deaths. And that remains our policy. I don’t want to get into terminology or how we referred to it. We acknowledged that 1.5 million Armenians were massacred, as I said, and we want to see a full historical accounting of those events,” the Spokesman said.

The comments come after UN Ambassador Samantha Power’s remarks at an event honoring the Nobel Prize laureate Elie Wiesel’s life and work.

Armenia To Launch Free Economic Zone With Iran
December 06 , 2016
Emil Danielyan

Armenia has reaffirmed its plans to create a "free economic zone"
along its border with Iran amid ongoing efforts by the governments of
the two neighboring states to expand bilateral commercial ties.

Iran's First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri and Energy Minister Hamid
Chitchian reportedly spoke of Tehran's strong interest in closer
economic cooperation with Yerevan when they met with Armenia's
visiting Minister for Energy Infrastructures Ashot Manukian on Monday .

Manukian flew to Tehran to co-chair, together with Chitchian, a
regular session of an Armenian-Iranian intergovernmental commission.

Chitchian was reported to announce that the two sides signed a
"comprehensive cooperation document" at the end of the two-day
meeting. "The document envisions cooperation in the fields of energy,
electricity exchange, natural gas, banking and insurance, and trade,"
the Mehr news agency quoted him as saying.

In particular, Iran "will establish a free trade zone in Armenian
territory," the Iranian minister added without elaborating. He noted
that the document was signed on the eve of Iranian President Hassan
Rouhani's visit to Armenia.

Chitchian appeared to refer to what the Armenian Ministry for Energy
Infrastructures and Natural Resources described as a joint memorandum
of understanding adopted by the Armenian-Iranian commission.

In a statement on the commission meeting, the ministry said: "The
Iranian side showed a great interest in and readiness for cooperation
on the planned creation of a free economic zone on the
Armenian-Iranian border."

In Abrahamian's words, Iranian entrepreneurs will be able to set up
manufacturing firms in the zone and engage in duty-free exports of
their products to Russia and other members of the Eurasian Economic
Union (EEU).

According to Armenian government data, Armenia's trade with Iran stood
at $276 million in 2015 and is on course to shrink this year.

Jahangiri lamented these modest trade volumes when he met with
Manukian on Monday . "The obstacles hampering economic cooperation
between Tehran and Yerevan must be removed," he said, according to
another Iranian news agency, Fars.

"Unfortunately, economic ties and trade have failed to keep up with
the excellent level of political relations and the goodwill of senior
Iranian and Armenian officials. So the joint commission should be more
active in this regard," added Iran's first vice-president.

Armenian-Iranian trade should rise significantly after the
construction of a new power transmission line connecting the two
countries. The $120 million facility, slated for completion by 2019,
will allow for a sharp increase in exports to Iran of Armenian
electricity generated by Iranian natural gas.

According to the Armenian Ministry for Energy Infrastructures, the
joint commission discussed the possibility of accelerating the
transmission line's construction.

Armenia apparently plans to increase imports of Iranian gas even
before that construction is complete. An Armenian government
delegation held talks for that purpose with representatives of Iran's
National Iranian Gas Export Company in Tehran on October 31 and
November 1. One of Manukian's deputies, Hayk Harutiunian, said
afterwards that they discussed not only the cost of additional Iranian
supplies but also possible transit of Iranian gas via Armenia.

Armenia currently imports up to 500 million cubic meters of Iranian
gas annually through a pipeline built in 2008. By comparison, its gas
imports from Russia total around 2 billion cubic meters

** FATHER FRANK’S RANTS Rant Number 706 12/12/16 CHIEF SPOOK SPEAKS

A SPEECH BY MI6 INTELLIGENCE CHIEF COMBINES JAMES BOND, THEOLOGY, XENOPHOBIA AND RUSSIA-BASHING.
------------------------------------------------------------
Russia and Syria’s President Assad want ‘to make a desert and then call it peace’. Thus accused British MI6’s spy Chief Alex Younger, showing how hard it is to recover from a classical education. (At a private, expensive fee-paying school, presumably.) Because he was quoting Roman historian Tacitus, who so reported Scottish chieftain Calgacus’ address to his men, rallying them to resist the invading armies of Rome. Hope Mr Younger realised whose ghost he was invoking: that of the most ardent admirer and advocate of Roman imperialism. Droll!

You learn from the head of MI6’s speech that Britain’s secret services have spies within the ranks of ISIS in Syria. Whom of course he designates as terrorists. The same jihadi lot who are ruthlessly targeted by Assad’s troops, with Russian backing. Was he comparing Islamic State with Caledonian freedom-fighter Calgacus? Odd because the latter was arguably defending his own land, whereas the Caliphate boys consist largely of foreign fighters, keen on slaying Syrian civilians, often in bloodcurdling ways. Don’t dig the analogy, I must say.

The spies who have infiltrated ISIS for Britain risk their lives. The result of being identified ‘could be their death’. You bet it could, Mr Younger! Fine example of English understatement, methinks. It would be a particular, unpleasant, slow and painful death, I should imagine, if Islamic State’s precedents are anything to go by. But then spying is not a nice job. You have to simulate friendship and active sympathy while harbouring enmity and hatred in your heart. An unenviable task, no matter how necessary. Spying is definitely a dirty job.

But why are the spooks risking that much? Money? Nope. It is to protect ‘their country and their religion’. Wot!?! Their religion? What religion could that be? Unless the MI6 boss has taken leave of his senses, it cannot be the Christian religion, could it? Imagine the headlines: ‘MI6 men fight for the Cross! Like the crusaders of old, they are combating the Saracen hordes! To save Britain from Islam!’ Not even the wildest fantasist would cook up a narrative like that. If Mr Younger lost his mind and did that, he would instantly sink into oblivion. But he is obviously a smart guy, so I conclude the ‘religion’ he alludes to can’t be Christianity.

Leaving aside Hinduism, Jainism and the Moonies as implausible, he must mean Islam, what else? So the British spies inside Daish are engaged in ‘protecting’ Islam. This too is peculiar for two reasons. First, ISIS means ‘Islamic State of Iraq and Syria’. Its black flags are emblazoned with the Muslims profession of faith, the shehada: ‘There is no god but God and Muhammad is the messenger of God’. That sounds pretty Islamic to me. It is not, on the face of it, a Christian slogan, is it? Of course, many claim Daish is a perversion of true Islam and that may well be true. Regardless, and here is the priest’s second point, what right, what authority has this infidel MI6 chief to legislate what is and what is not true Islam? Unless he secretly converted and is in fact an alim, a Muslim scholar, Mr Younger has not entitlement and credibility whatsoever to speak on such burning theological matters. Angels would fear to tread on that ground – unless they were demons, perhaps.

Perversely, the British chief spook bashes the Russians and Assad as the main culprits of the Syrian mayhem. Does he imply that ISIS will gain more recruits because of the onslaught against them? And the deaths of many innocent lives? Actually, if minds are so fanatical and warped to be attracted by the Caliphate’s ferocity, what difference would any ‘moderation’ make? More likely, it would be seen as a sign of weakness and be a stimulus to commit even more atrocities.
Delusion to suppose otherwise.
However, Mr Younger has an ace up his sleeve. It called…007! His ‘fierce dedication to the cause of Britain’. Huh! The cat is out of the bag! What a pearl! A beautifully revealing slip. As Semiotics Professor Umberto Eco showed in a perceptive essay, you only have to look at Bond’s gallery of villains to perceive how deeply xenophobic Ian Fleming’s creation was. Read the novels, pray. 007’s foes are all bloody foreigners. All display even physical marks of sinister diversity. Dr No, Le Chiffre, Blofeld, Emilio Largo, Mr Big, Scaramanga, Hugo Drax, Goldfinger... From Blofeld’s lobeless ears to Drax’s dental diastema to Dr No’s claw-like metal hands…geddit? Race too comes into it: Mr Big is black. Dr No is Eurasian, Drax German, Largo Italian…None is a Muslim, note – Fleming failed to predict Bin Laden. Still, this is Bond as a true Brexit hero!

Britain’s ‘ultimate protection’ lies in values, the chief spook says. Given the kind of man Ian Fleming conceived James Bond to be, I wonder: what kind of values?

All right, MI6 has managed to foil some terrorist plots. To that extent, it is needed. You don’t wish yourself or your loved ones to be blown up, do you? I only wish Mr Younger refrained from theological speculations. And also that he retired Bond from service for good.
