Letters to the Editor

Sir,
I had decided never to respond to the crude and incongruous banalities that more often than not appear in your unsolicited mailings but could not help it as was thoroughly offended and disgusted at the letter that you published in your 4 June edition (see below) which clearly, in my view, has been written by a ghost “Souren Sarafyan” from Turkey’s MIT offices, or by one of their trained agents in psychological warfare and anti-Armenian propaganda. I just cannot believe that an Armenian can speak in the tone and terms that this ghost “Souren Sarafyan” does about another Armenian or refer to “eastern” or “western” Armenian language/literature/spelling, etc. in the manner that he has: Just think over what this agent says for a minute; the mind boggles:
- “the insult to our forefathers, the inscription on the monument was in Eastern Armenian…”
- “Armenia's linguistic imperialism”
- “the abomination of the Eastern Armenian spelling”…
So Paruir Sevak, Yeghishe Charents, Avedik Isahakian, Hamo Sahyan…, to name but a few among the entire great literary giants of Armenian literature and learning, not to mention centuries (or even 80 years of “eastern” spelling”) of “eastern” Armenian literature arts and sciences, the heritage and pride of ALL ARMENIANS are brushed aside as “abominable… insult …[and] “Armenia’s linguistic imperialism”!!!
And what is our illustrious and brilliant editor’s response to this Turkish/Turkish inspired filth: well it is inoffensive and brief enough: ““Editor’s note: All images have been uploaded on Click Gibros on Gibrahayer dot com”!!!
No challenging of, to put it mildly, the thoroughly inappropriate language referring to Armenia and the Armenian language, all be it in its “eastern” version! Just a technical direction as to where this “Souren Sarafyan” can find what he is looking for!
And we thought we only had to deal with “gharabaghci” v “hayastanci” v “spurkahay” poison!
Ala and alack!
Yours disgusted,
Bagrad Nazarian - London - United Kingdom

PS: If previous nightmarish experience is anything to go by all I’m going to get is a personal attack on me as an ostrich like diversion and justification for this unacceptable insult to all (intelligent and patriotic) Armenians. PLEASE SPARE ME AN “answer”!

Dear Bagrad Nazarian,
After threatening to unsubscribe for the third time we are happy you have somehow found a way to join our online family.
As you know, we do not monitor who subscribes (it is done automatically), and we do not censor what is sent for publication.
This is a free forum for anyone to express their views. Souren Sarafyan took advantage of that opportunity last week. You took advantage of it this week.
I am happy to have provided this forum where different and conflicting opinions can co-exist.
As a nation, we have experienced far worst and acute differences and survived.
This newsletter never called our fellow compatriots MIT Turkish spies who ridiculed the tricolour for more than seven decades, nor did we ever call names the leadership, who labelled the fighters and liberators of Karabagh "romantics and 'avanturists', who were toying with Armenia's independence and the blood of the youth of the Armenian people"
