Ahsha Safai's career in public service began in his hometown of Cambridge, Massachusetts where he worked as an aide to a City Councilor, learning first-hand the importance of effectively addressing local issues on behalf of those less fortunate. Ahsha graduated from Northeastern University with a dual degree in African-American Studies & Political Science, before assuming a position in the White House as an assistant to President Clinton’s Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs. In 2000, Ahsha graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a master’s degree in Urban Studies & City Planning with a concentration in neighborhood revitalization and a specialization in immigrant communities and public housing, and moved to San Francisco, where he and his wife, Yadira Taylor, reside as homeowners in the Excelsior district.

Upon arriving in San Francisco, Ahsha worked as Legislative Liaison/Organizer for the San Francisco Housing Authority (SFHA) under Mayor Willie Brown. In early 2003, Ahsha became Deputy Field Director for Gavin Newsom’s mayoral campaign, subsequently serving as Deputy Director to the Mayor’s Office of Community Development (MOCD), which distributes over $25 million primarily to neighborhood revitalization programs in low to moderate income communities. In 2007 Ahsha left to work for the Mission Language Vocational School (MLVS), a non-profit workforce development program.

Ahsha is an Iranian-American. His mother is American and his father is Iranian. His first name is a blend of his father’s name, Ata Safai, and his mother’s name, Marsha McDonald. Ahsha lived in Tehran until he was 5 years old, when due to the 1979 Iranian revolution, he moved to the United States.
