An Appeal from Andrew Dismore MP‏

General Election will be called soon with the press speculating that this will be on 6 May.

All incumbent MPs who wish to continue in office will have to seek re-election in their constituencies.
One of these MPs is Andrew Dismore who will contest Hendon..
He (alongside other Labour MPs) thinks he has a tough battle ahead, and has asked for assistance to support his campaign.
This call for support has been extended to the Armenian community.
Why should the Armenians respond to this request?
Andrew is the MP whose lobbying resulted eventually in the establishment of the Holocaust Memorial Trust.
We have had our issues with the way this trust conducts its national commemorations.
But Her Majesty's Government that set the policy, not Andrew Dismore.
To my knowledge, Andrew has been attending Commons meetings on the Armenian Genocide since 2007.
He continues to do so and give advice to our activists.
He has secured his second private member's bill to be debated on this subject which unfortunately is likely to be stopped by the general election.
If you want to know how seriously the Turkish government views this initiative, read the material that follows.
We need Andrew in the House of Commons in the hope that he will continue his work for our cause.
Please offer yourself to enhance his chances.
To know what this entails, read the information at the end - and then volunteer.

This Bill was presented to Parliament on 6 January 2010.

This is known as First Reading and there was no debate on the Bill at this stage.

The Bill is a Private Member's Bill which are often not printed until close to a Second Reading debate.

British justice minister tells Erdoğan ’genocide’ bill will not pass
ISTANBUL — Daily News with wires

British Justice Minister Jack Straw on Tuesday assured Turkey's prime minister
that Parliament would not pass a resolution recognizing the Ottoman-era killings
of Armenians as "genocide," CNNTürk reported.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was in London on an official visit
Tuesday, during which he was scheduled to meet with British Prime Minister
Gordon Brown.

"The chance of this becoming law is zero," Straw said, according to CNNTürk's
Web site. "I can assure everyone on this issue."

After the Swedish parliament adopted an Armenian "genocide" resolution last
week, many have turned their attention to the British Parliament, where a draft
will be submitted to a House of Commons committee after a second reading on
April 30.

If it is approved, an “Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day” will be established
in the country.

"The English government and the opposition do not support this draft," Straw said.
The British committee is scheduled to hold its last evaluation in late March; the first
reading of the draft was made Jan. 6. A similar draft will follow the same process
in the British House of Lords.

Armenians claim 1.5 million of their kin were massacred in 1915 at the hands
of the Ottoman Empire. Turkey rejects these claims and says many people on both
sides were killed during a period of civil strife.
