EVA RIVAS & HAMAZKAYIN'S SIPAN
DANCE ENSEMBLE ROCK STROVOLOS HALL

GIBRAHAYER e-magazine
Alexander-Michael Hadjilyra for Gibrahayer e-magazine - Nicosia - A panorama of beautiful traditional and modern Armenian dances, performed by the 45 hard-working Armenian-Cypriot members of Sipan’s barakhoump, dazzled the nearly full Strovolos Municipal Theatre last Saturday, 10 April 2010. Together with a brief greeting by the Minister of Education and Culture’s delegate and Hamazkayin's Chairman Adour Karagullian, the spectacular show was two-hours long: the spectators were amazed and enchanted by the majestic and graceful performance of the dancers, the joyful young dancers' group, and the skilfully-performed “Pert” dance. This year was special: Sipan is celebrating a decade (hopefully, the first of many), for which choreographer Janna Tahmizian was awarded a commemorative gift. On top of all these delights, Eva Rivas (Armenia’s contestant for ESC 2010) appeared live, in all her 2-metre glory and surprising modesty, to sing for us Armenia’s participation (Dzirani goud, Apricot stone) and Sayat Nova’s exquisite piece “Tamam Ashkharh”. No more words are necessary except for a big thank you to Hamazkayin, Armenian MP Vartkes Mahdessian, choreographer Janna Tahmizian, our committed semi-professional dancers and all others who helped make this exceptional show a reality.

HOLY LITURGY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN
47 YEARS AT SOURP BOGHOS CHAPEL

GIBRAHAYER e-magazine

Alexander-Michael Hadjilyra for Gibrahayer e-magazine - Nicosia - Last Sunday, 11 April 2010, a “Merelotsi Badarak” (All Souls’ Mass) was held at the chapel of the old Ledra Palace Armenian cemetery in the presence of about 100 faithful, including representatives of community organisations, Armenian MP Vartkes Mahdessian with whose efforts a 155,000 euro grant was secured.
This was a historical occasion, for it was the first Badarak to be celebrated inside the Sourp Boghos chapel since 1963! Although according to the records of the Arachnortaran, the cemetery has been in use since 1 November 1877, there are references to its usage before that [and I have personally found 4 earlier tombstones: Nata(?) Carletti-Eramian (in faded Latin script, rested in September 1858), Yeremia H. Yeramian (08/12/1823-19/11/1859), Hagop Guvezian (1827-1867), and Sdepan Papazian (rested on 20 August 1875)].

... when the British came to Nicosia in July 1878, the city was entirely within the Venetian walls, and outside it were only 6 constructions: Keushk Chiftlik, a tannery, a café, two Turkish cemeteries and this cemetery, the only of the six still surviving…
The chapel inside the cemetery, dedicated to Sourp Boghos, was built in 1892 in memory of Boghos G. Odadjian from Constantinople, Dragoman (tarkman) of the Cyprus administration, as stated in his will and testament and immortalised on his marble tombstone beside the chapel. It is a beautiful chapel, in which it was customary to celebrate some services until 1963. Following the 1963-1964 events and the proximity to the buffer zone, together with the fact that the Ayios Dhometios cemetery was used since 1931, the old cemetery and chapel had been neglected; a partial restoration was conducted in 1988, but the chapel was not fully restored until May 2009. In late March GIBRAHAYER e-magazine2010, a commemorative plaque was installed in the southern side of the cemetery, containing the names of 419 persons buried there, whose information is found in the Prelature’s archives; according to an earlier memorandum by the Prelature, 463 persons were buried there (the 44 others must have been Protestants and Catholics).
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Archbishop Varoujan Hergelian and Armenian MP Vartkes Mahdessian for their joined efforts in restoring this historical cemetery and organising the first (of many, I hope) mass there since 1963! To realise the historical importance of this cemetery, I will mention an unknown fact for many: when the British came to Nicosia in July 1878, the city was entirely within the Venetian walls, and outside it were only 6 constructions: Keushk Chiftlik, a tannery, a café, two Turkish cemeteries and this cemetery, the only of the six still surviving…

Letters to the Editor
Sireli gibrahayer.com,
I would like to take this opportunity to express my immense "Thank you" to Simon Aynedjian, Gibrahayer's chief editor and a militant and experienced journalist. Simon is present in nearly all Armenian-Cypriot events, and with the use of technology he brings them to us via youtube, his newsletter and other means. He covers cultural, religious and social events in a way that the whole world is informed about them. He is there to immortalise the Srpazan's karoz and Mr Jebejian's message; there to capture the graceful dances of Sipan's baroghner and the beautiful singing of Nareg's yerkchakhoump; there to document historical occasions, such as the oukhdaknatsoutiun at Magaravank or the Merelotsi Badarak at Sourp Boghosi madour; and there to film and share important visits, such as the one by Eva Rivas or Marios Garoyian...
I often feel that without you, Simon, we would be lost into unawareness and obscurity. I wish to praise you for your restless efforts to give exposure to the Gibrahay kaghout, and to give an Armenian flavour to things, and I hope that God grants you the required strength to continue. I would also like to encourage all entities able to contribute (financial-, information-, promotion- wise) to do so, in order to enrich and improve the invaluable services provided by this unique newsletter across the Diaspora.
Asdvadz mishd lav bahe kezi enger Simon!

ARMENIAN GIRL CHOPPED UP AND SERVED FOR DINNER

Daily Mail - Matt Stewart April 9 - The trial of two Russian men accused of chopping up a 16-year-old Armenian girl in Russia and eating her with potatoes has been postponed after a juror fell ill looking at prosecution images. The case was postponed after the juror had to be excused while examining photographs of student Karina Barduchian after her death.
Maxim Golovatskikh and his friend florist Yury Mozhnov, both 20, are accused of drowning Karina Barduchian, in a bath, then carving up her body and serving her meat with potatoes to a lodger.

ARF DASHNAKTSOUTIUN MEETS WITH PRESIDENT SARGSYAN IN WASHINGTON

GIBRAHAYER e-magazineAsbarez April 12 - Washington - On the sidelines of President Obama’s International Nuclear Summit, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan met with a delegation of the ARF Dashnaktsoutiun Bureau on Monday evening.
Attending the meeting were
ARF Bureau members Dr. Viken Hovsepian, Hagop Der-Khachadourian and Haig Oshagan, accompanied by ARF Eastern US Central Committee chairman Antranig Kasbarian.
During the meeting the two sides discussed Armenia-Diaspora relations, Armenia’s foreign policy, specifically Armenia-Turkey relations and the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process, Diaspora efforts on behalf of Armenia and Karabakh, as well as efforts to garner international recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
Earlier Monday, after a commemoration event at President Woodrow Wilson’s tomb, where Sargsyan laid a wreath and later made a statement, in an interview with the Armenian Weekly, the Bureau’s Hovsepian urged Sargsyan to rescind Armenia’s signature from the protocols.
During the face-to-face meeting with Sargsyan, the Bureau said that the party’s concerns completely would dissipate if Sargsyan rescinded Armenia’s signature from the documents.

SARGSYAN MEETS WITH OBAMA AND ERDOGAN
AND REJECTS TURKISH PRECONDITIONS
SARGSYAN: "GENOCIDE CANNOT BE QUESTIONED"

GIBRAHAYER e-magazine

Asbarez 12 April 2010 - Washington DC - Apr 12th, 2010 - (Combined Sources)-President Serzh Sargsyan on Monday met with President Barack Obama and held talks with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of an international nuclear summit.
Sargsyan also attended an event at the tomb of President Woodrow Wilson, where after laying a wreath, he made remarks at the National Cathedral addressed to community members and Armenian Genocide survivors who had gathered for the event.
"Turkey cannot speak to Armenia and the Armenian people in a language of preconditions," President Serzh Sargsyan remarked at a gathering at the Woodrow Wilson Monument, moments after his meeting with Erdogan.
He also emphasised that Armenia was not willing to make the fact of the Armenian Genocide a matter of discussion, nor did he believe that Turkey would have a positive role in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.
ARF Dashnaktsoutiun Bureau member Dr. Viken Hovsepian, who attended the National Cathedral event called on Sargsyan to rescind his signature from the Armenia-Turkey protocols.
"We heard President Sargsyan's speech, which primarily honoured President Wilson's memory and his friendship with the Armenian people," he said during interview with our sister publication, the Armenian Weekly.
"The symbolism of President Wilson goes far beyond the friendship aspect. Wilson is the architect of what became known as 'Wilsonian Armenia'-an independent Armenia which included Armenian provinces of the Ottoman Empire. We are mindful of the symbolism of President Sargsyan's visit to Wilson's tomb and his speech today," explained Hovsepian.
"The real expression, however, of this symbolism-and its logical continuation-would be President Sargsyan's rescinding his signature from the Turkey-Armenia protocols," said Hovsepian.
"President Sargsyan's remarks - both in timing and in substance - are greatly encouraging," ARF Central Committee Chairman Antranig Kasbarian told the Armenian Weekly. "The symbolism of honouring Woodrow Wilson - a champion of Genocide survivors and guarantor of Western Armenia - was not lost on those assembled. Nor was the President's assessment of current political relations, in which he clearly rejected any
preconditions by Turkey toward normalising bilateral ties," Kasbarian added.

RAMGAVAR AZADAGAN GOUSAGTSOUTIUN OFFERS TO CRIMINALISE NEGATION OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

PanARMENIAN.Net 12/April/2010 - Ramgavar Azadagan Party of Armenia (HRAG) urged the Armenian government to undertake specific steps to remedy omissions allowed in the issue of international recognition of Genocide.
As Ramgavar Azadagan party leader Harutyun Arakelyan told a news conference in Yerevan, the RA parliament must criminalise negation of the Armenian Genocide.
“Besides, Armenia has to develop a specific international law based program envisaging compensation for 1915-1923 losses to Armenian people, with similar programs covering compensation for 1988-1994 the Armenian Genocide in Azerbaijan.”
“Until the steps above are undertaken, the international community will keep pressuring Armenia,” Harutyun Arakelyan said, characterising international recognition of the Armenian Genocide as a moral victory, but not yet legal.
