JENNIFER LOPEZ'S TRIP TO TURKISH-OCCUPIED NORTH CYPRUS
ON INVASION ANNIVERSARY, SPARKS WAVE OF PROTESTS

Gibrahayer e-magazine - Nicosia Tuesday July 6 - Cyprus grass roots organisations in the United States have reported that American celebrity Jennifer Lopez has still not cancelled or denied that she is set to visit the Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus.
Turkish newspaper Zaman confirmed the political nature of Lopez’s illegal visit, and claimed that Jennifer Lopez signed an agreement with the so-called "Crato" hotel/casino owners last week. Zaman reported that "it is true that Greeks put pressure on Lopez not to visit "Turkish" Cyprus. Of course, she was affected by the pressure. She even received threats from Greeks. In effect, she has certain hesitation. However, Zaman concludes that there is a contract that is signed by the actress." Reportedly, the Turkish lobby is also planning to broadcast this event to 193 countries.
Cyprus grass root organisations have urged to call, fax and email the William Morris Agency in New York that represents Lopez to urge her "not to visit Turkish-occupied Cyprus."
She is expected to arrive in Cyprus on 20 July, which is the 36th anniversary of the illegal Turkish military-invasion of Cyprus. Hurriyet newspaper says that Prime Minster Tayip Erdogan will inaugurate the hotel.
Turkish ultra-nationalist Volkan newspaper referring to the "activism by the Greek Cypriots" wondered how they will ever come to an agreement on the Cyprus issue and called upon the "head of state" Dervis Eroglou to cancel his next visit with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias, to demonstrate against the Greek Cypriot stance on Jennifer Lopez.
CNN-TURK claimed that the Lopez event is being staged in order to "bring the two communities, Greek and Turkish, together!!!
Greek Cypriots say that Jennifer Lopez will be paid three million dollars to celebrate with the unrepentant rapists of 800 Greek-Cypriot women of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

Letter from The President of CYPRUS' MOVEMENT OF REFUGEES & DISPLACED MOTHERS
Markella Isaia-Chakka to Mrs. Jennifer Lopez

Dear Mrs. Lopez,
I write to you as the President of the Displaced Mothers of Cyprus, as a woman and as a mother above all. From this part of the world we have been watching and admiring your successful career, but also your amazing strength in raising your children and determination in offering them the right values in life.
However, we were really saddened and shocked when we heard that you will visit the occupied by the Turkish troops area of the Republic of Cyprus and take part in the celebrations for the anniversary of the unlawful invasion of Turkey to our country which has deprived us of our homes and of our basic human rights within our own country. Since July 20th, 1974, when Turkey invaded our island, one third of the population of the island of Cyprus that is 200,000 people - probably the largest proportion of Internally Displaced Persons/Refugees in a single country – have been forcibly expelled from their homes and 37% of the sovereign territory of the Republic of Cyprus has come under Turkish military occupation. Ever since the massive displacement, Greek Cypriots have been prevented from returning to their homes and properties against all United Nations’ Resolutions and all Decisions of the European Court of Human Rights condemning Turkey for its unlawful presence on the island.
The displaced people, who in effect became refugees in their own country, suffered not only the loss of their properties and belongings, but also the loss of their beloved ones, some of whom are still missing with Turkey denying to report on their fates. Members of our movement, who were teenagers at the time, were raped by Turkish soldiers and were captured as prisoners of war - the rest of us were raped psychologically and still suffer.
Turkey has uprooted our childhood and our dreams, yet we do not lose our faith. We now have our own families and children and struggle to raise them with our limited means away from our homes. BUT WE DO NOT FORGET the TRAGEDY of the 20th of July 1974.
On your website you say that “I, myself, am Catholic,” (Lopez told Southern Florida’s NBC 6); we would like to inform you that this past June His Holiness Pope Benedict the 16th visited the Republic of Cyprus, but refused to visit the occupied by the Turkish troops areas ignoring an “official” invitation to do so. This should say a lot about what this “state” represents to Christianity and humanity. As Christians ourselves, and as women who have suffered by the atrocities of Turkey, we urge you not to make this trip to Cyprus and not to take part in these celebrations. The fact that you are a world-famous celebrity makes this “birthday party” a very well-camouflaged trap on behalf of Turkey, the consequences of which will have a direct negative impact on my country and us, as the Turkish propaganda is using you in an attempt to purchase a false “normalcy” and false “legitimacy” for the bandit pseudo-state that is recognised by no-one but Turkey.
When You Make Your Decision, PLEASE have in mind THAT:
On July 20th 1974 Turkey invaded and is still occupying a part of Cyprus, and hence Europe itself, Turkey perpetrated ethnic cleansing and war crimes against Greek Cypriots, we, the Internally Displaced Mothers and Refugees demand Restoration of our Human Rights and a Safe Return to our HOMES and PROPERTIES, we demand the determination of the fate and whereabouts of the missing persons and the accountability of Turkey.
These facts are the truth which is often so tactfully omitted in discussions about Cyprus and ignored by the world leaders who present themselves as the Protectors of Human Rights. As a woman, a mother and a Christian yourself we ask you to respect our sufferings and not celebrate your birthday along with the looters of our history, of our past, of our present and of our future. We count on your sensitivity against the violation of human rights throughout the world and we would like to ask for your active support in our fight against imperialism and in our efforts to restore our human rights, the same way you actively fought to raise awareness about the Mexican women murdered in Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua. I am personally willing to provide all the information you might need in an objective manner and co-operate with you in every possible way in order to inform the world about these unpunished crimes held in Cyprus since 1974. We trust you will make the right decision.
I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Markella Isaia-Chakka - President

CLINTON COMPLETES VISIT TO
AZERBAIJAN AND ARMENIA

Bloomberg - By Lucian Kim - Jul 4, 2010 - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged Armenia and Azerbaijan to seek a durable peace as tensions rise between the two former Soviet republics.
“Peace is possible and necessary,” Clinton told reporters in the Azeri capital Baku today. “It is a prerequisite for building a secure and prosperous future in both nations.”
Troops of the two nations have clashed at a ceasefire line and Azerbaijan has held large-scale military exercises in the last month. The two countries, squeezed between Russia and Iran, both maintain friendly relations with the U.S.
Clinton met with Azeri President Ilham Aliyev for lunch in Baku today before flying to the Armenian capital Yerevan for a dinner meeting with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan. It was the first visit to the two countries by a U.S. Secretary of State since 1992.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Armenia fought a war with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, a majority- Armenian-populated region inside Azerbaijan. A 1994 cease-fire left a fifth of Azerbaijan under Armenian control and more than 10 percent of its population displaced. The frozen conflict is reminiscent of deadlocked separatist disputes in neighbouring Georgia that erupted into war with Russia two years ago.
The U.S. is also backing reconciliation between Armenia and its neighbour Turkey, and Clinton praised Sargsyan for his determination to normalise relations.
“We urge Turkey to take the steps it promised to take,” she told reporters in Yerevan.

WHO WILL BE THE NEXT
RUSSIAN PRESIDENT?

Gibrahayer e-magazine exclusive by Prof. Hovhannes Pilikian

Professor Hovhannes I. Pilikian is an internationally acclaimed film producer, Theatre director, a classical music composer, a classical scholar and social scientist, fluent in many modern languages, including French, German, Arabic, Armenian and Chinese. His articles have exclusively appeared on Gibrahayer e-magazine since 2005.
Pushkin House is a Russian cultural centre in the heart of London’s West End, very near the British Museum. I frequently attend events there, even though not a member formally.
On a Friday in May (the 28th to be precise, 2010), I popped in to buy a CD of Chaliapin I adore, that great 19th century Russian baritonal Basso singing arias – my own Three Tenors are Caruso, Pavarotti, and … Chaliapin! They have produced not a tremolo between them in their long careers of singing, evidenced even by the primitive technology that would easily have picked up on such in the time of Caruso and Chaliapin. Any singer with any vibrato in their voice will sound like a broken record. Broken records (like the voice) used to get stuck in a groove and sound exactly like the modern vibrato-riddled singers …
The very gallant Director of the Pushkin Centre, an orchestra Conductor who has grown into his majestic surname, Mr. Julian Gallant kindly invited me to attend the book launch that day advertised as a Russian language event – he re-assured me that there will be a translator into English. And there was – an excellent one, Miss Yelena Cook – I only stayed because of her verbatim translation. And thank God I did stay … It was a Revelation on a biblical scale.

NEW PLANS FOR NAREG, SET
TO CHANGE SCHOOL LIFESTYLE

Gibrahayer e-magazine - Nicosia 7 July, 2010 - Nareg school have announced major changes in providing solutions to our changing times, by initiating an afternoon program of study, fun and games under the supervision and watchful eye of designated supervisors.
Primarily intended for children with working parents - but open to all Nareg students - the new afternoon schedule is set to constitute a major change in Nareg's "lifestyle", starting from September.
Speaking to Gibrahayer e-magazine, Armenian MP in the Cyprus Parliament Vartkes Mahdessian said that the proposed changes would add value to the quality of life at Nareg school and assist parents to better cope with their daily schedule, by addressing their needs.
Nareg Parents Association members that met to discuss the changes, said it was important that the new afternoon schedule was understood by the community, and urged parents to contact them directly, so that they would provide further information to them about the new project.
One thing is for certain, that the newly appointed Hokapartsoutiun has rolled its sleeves up and is working very hard not only to complete the tasks of the coming year, but at the same time to also correct inherited shortcomings.
We urge our readers - specially the parents of Nareg - to embrace this project and benefit from its multi-dimensional aspects.

“GIBROSI AREVIK”

GIBRAHAYER e-magazineAlexander-Michael Hadjilyra for Gibrahayer e-magazine - On Wednesday, 30 June 2010, between 5:30-6:30 pm members of the Art School’s Dance Class of the Armenian Representative’s Office had their end of year performance at the Vahram Utudjian Hall. Under the guidance of choreographer Armenuhi Mkhitaryan of Armenia, 20 children gave a very charming performance, which was attended by the proud family members of the children, the Armenian Representative Vartkes Mahdessian and his wife Maggie and members and friends of the community.
The children, aged between 6 and 12, beautifully danced to the tunes of 9 Armenian and 2 Greek traditional and modern dances. The performance was most interesting, as it was unofficially called an “open lesson”.
Before and after the performance, Mrs Mkhitaryan explained to us a few things about the dance class and informed us that the total number of children of the class is 27. The class was first organised in September 2008 and has been functioning throughout the school years 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. Following Mrs Mkhitaryan’s remarks, the Armenian MP, Vartkes Mahdessian, congratulated the choreographer, the children and their parents; he praised their work, he wished that the dance class increases in number next year and described them as “Gibrosi Arevik”. Bravo to all those involved in this project and may the commemorative photographs (link below) immortalise the first steps of dancing, for many years to come!
