Catholicos Karekin II Stands Accused‏

 Editorial, 8 August 2013
Faced with local or national crisis most Armenians go into two modes these days: “Let’s not wash our dirty laundry in public” or“Exposure is the first step in resolving a crisis.” In the past few months a scandal—immense, terrifying and excoriating—has crashed into our national public arena. It’s no less than the management style and reputation of the Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II. As catholicos, he is not just the spiritual leader of the Armenian Apostolic Church, but is almost as important to the Armenian Nation as the president of Armenia. A smear on the catholicos is a smear on our Nation—even on those who are members of the Cilicia See, are Catholic, Protestant… atheist. ....Read more >>

International Intrigue

A plan to erect a plaque or monument in Mount Hope cemetery is stirring up controversy beyond the boundaries of Brantford.
The plaque would have a dual purpose of marking an early Ontario Muslim burial plot while also telling the story of a 1914 roundup of about 100 so-called “enemy aliens” during the First World War.
Researcher Bill Darfler shows one of two stones with Arabic script, which may be boundary markers of a Muslim plot in the northeast corner of Mt. Hope Cemetery in Brantford, Ontario on Thursday, August 1, 2013. The plot, dating back to 1912, measures approximately 33 x 33 feet and contains 16 graves, the last burial having taken place in 1963. The apparent linking of the two is misleading, critics say, adding that a recent visit by representatives from the Turkish consulate in Toronto to Mayor Chris Friel's office and the cemetery hints at a political agenda. ....Read more >>

Following the installation of the misleading Turkish monument in Ottawa last August, the Turkish Embassy of Canada is now planning to erect a monument at the Brantford Mount Hope Veterans' Cemetery (Ontario) in memory of the "Turkish" internees who were sent from Brantford to northern Ontario during WWI.

Although the internees were Alevis and Kurds, and the single Turk buried at the cemetery died two years before the start of the war, the Turkish embassy is willfully manipulating the evidence and is depicting the internees as Turks. According to reports, TVO television network, which is owned by the province of Ontario, is planning a documentary about the "Turkish" internees and the phoney monument at the Brantford cemetery. ....Read more >>

Act Now. Not Tomorrow.

Below is a letter Keghart.com Editorial Board member Dr. Dikran Abrahamian sent to four Armenian community leaders in Montreal, signatories of a recent circular "The time has come to stop slandering and to think of the future of our church and community".--Editor

Dear Friends,
Thank you for the recent circular initiated by 23 individuals, regarding the turmoil at the Armenian Diocese of Canada.
We, at Keghart, realize the importance of the issue and support any initiative that would improve "the future of our church and community". The problems that we face, such as corruption, nepotism, fraud, despotism, to name a few, are not unique to our Church and community but are noted in many clusters of the Armenian Diaspora, from Geneva to Montreal, Los Angeles to Lyon and Nice. Etchmiadzin and Antelias are not immune either.
