page1image4280 page1image4712
On Sunday, 19th July, on the grounds of St. Sarkis Church and Iverna Gardens in Kensington, the 5th
Armenian Street Festival was celebrated. A beautiful Sunday morning started with Badarak at 10.30am. It was followed by Antasdan at 12.30pm, a Medieval Church Procession in celebration of God’s beautiful creation and blessing of the four corners of the earth. At 1pm Bishop Hovakim and the dignitaries proceeded to the entrance of the Festival for the cutting of the ribbon which signified the start of the Festival. The Armenian Street Festival is a beautiful and powerful expression of Armenian life, heritage, identity and faith. The dignitaries yet again had the use of the Garden where
tables were laid out with delicious food and drinks. Bishop Hovakim proceeded to the podium and welcomed all to the Festival and blessed this annual event and then passed on the microphone to Steven Pound MP, who is a strong proponent of Armenian culture and the cause of the recognition of the genocide, now in its 100th commemorative year. Nouritsa Matossian was again the Master of Ceremonies. Delicious food was sold, and there were a number of stalls offering Armenian artefacts, drinks, bric-a-brac, a tombola and raffle. The participants were entertained during the afternoon by the Jirair Band. At 2pm there was a concert in St. Sarkis Church. Levon Chilingirian accompanied by
Tigran Grigoryan delighted the congregation with Komitas songs, followed by the London Armenian Opera with soloist mezzo-soprano Anais Heghoyan, conducted by Aris Nadirian performing parts of the Opera Davit Bek. At 2.45pm the Akhtamar Dance Group and the children’s group performed, followed by audience participation. The Festival closed with the drawing of the raffle. Thank you to the Festival Committee of the Primate’s Office and all the volunteers.
