Book Review - WHO ARE THE ARMENIANS?

Review - WHO ARE THE ARMENIANS?

By Susan P. Pattie

In collaboration with Gagik Stepan-Sarkissian and Maral Kerovpyan

Susan Pattie is the director of the Armenian Institute and collectively she has produced a colourfully illustrated children's book which encompasses an introduction into all manner of Armenian life. It introduces musical instruments, history, games and what is more the book is a good resource for teachers and parents. It reaches the reader at range of levels, from kindergarten or to those who just want to get to know about the basics in a wide range of topics about the Armenians. It uses real photographs and not at all patronizing to older children or adults. The CD is put together using artists with clear diction in Wester Armenian as well as Eastern.

This very appealing book is also handy for the home, its aim is simple, it gives an identity to children, I would say, as young as three. Armenian’s are known to adapt into which ever country they settle, and never seem to forget their roots. This book helps underpin their own knowledge base and useful around the house as a resource.

How does the book work? It gives bite-size information, easy enough to retain for anyone who is introduced to the Armenian language or history, for the first time. For that reason, young children can be introduced to the songs, the alphabet and most importantly the Lords Prayer. There is a CD included with the book, correlating a number of activities found in the book which you and the family will enjoy together.

I have given you my thoughts, now you can decide for your selves by ordering this carefully devised informative and educational book from the Armenian Institute or simply obtain it from its ISBN: 0-9543609-3-1
