COMMUNIQUE 2 |
In March 2009, a delegation headed by the newly appointed executive director of the Hayastan All Armenian Fund (HAAF) Mr Ara Vartanian arrived in Cyprus to look into the reasons the Cyprus chapter of the HAAF had been inactive over the last few years, and to try and bring about its reactivation.
At the meeting attended by the Primate, members of the Diocesan and Executive Councils of the Armenian Church of Cyprus and the Representative of the Armenian community, the problem was discussed extensively and exhaustively. The meeting was also attended by those members of the HAAF Cyprus chapter committee who had expressed their willingness to continue serving on the committee. The members of the delegation of HAAF left Cyprus having received the reassurance that the Armenian Prelature of Cyprus and the Representative of the Armenian community would do their utmost to bring about the reactivation of the HAAF Cyprus chapter. During his short visit, Mr Vartanian also met members of the Armenian community of Cyprus in the Utudjian Hall. In his address, Mr Vartanian referred to the mission, plans and achievements of the HAAF and appealed to the Armenian community of Cyprus to help the HAAF build a better tomorrow for the people of Armenia and Artsakh. In appreciation of the efforts of the HAAF and to set an example, Representative Vartkes Mahdessian made a donation of $5,000 US dollars to the HAAF. The proposal that the HAAF Cyprus chapter operate under the umbrella of the Armenian Prelature of Cyprus was approved by the Diocesan Council of the Armenian Church of Cyprus, and with the necessary changes made, the committee of the HAAF Cyprus chapter now consists of: Archbishop Varoujan, Vartkes Mahdessian – Presidents Sebouh Tavitian – Chairman Yeghia Kayayian – Secretary Haig Der Nishanian – Treasurer Armand Baltayian, Nazaret Davidian, John Guevherian, Hagop Kazandjian, Vicken Kesterlian, Boghos Mahdessian, Avedis Poshoghlian, Kevork Zartarian – members Zarouhi Vosgeritchian is the representative of the HAAF Cyprus chapter in Limassol. Since its reactivation, the main activity of the HAAF Cyprus chapter has been the annual collection of donations at the time of the telethon in Los Angeles. The proceeds from these over the last two years have been as follows:- 2009 € 7.275 euros 2010 € 22.749 euros The members of the committee of the HAAF Cyprus chapter are fully aware of the fact that the success of their efforts is completely dependent on the donations of the members of our community and the level of the confidence they have towards the HAAF. Consequently it has been decided to follow the example of our Organisation, the HAAF, and publish from now on our annual accounts, starting with the years 2009 and 2010. We finally wish to express and convey to our kind donors, our deep gratitude and sincere thanks. Through your donations, Cyprus is at last participating in the efforts to improve the living conditions in the rural areas of Armenia and Artsakh, thus helping strengthen the resolve of the people in those areas not to abandon their native lands.
