Alexander-Michael Hadjilyra - Last Saturday morning was a sunny autumn morning in Nicosia, not so different from the Friday before or the Sunday after. What was different however, at least for those fortunate enough to come with us, was that a group of Armenian-Cypriots, Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots crossed over to the Turkish-occupied side and visited the old Armenian quarter of walled Nicosia, bringing back to memory life as it was there in the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and early 1960s.
Younger and older generations walked together from the old Mangoian house (now the Home for Co-Operation) in the Köşklü Çiftlik area to the Armenian quarter of the old city. The older ones shared their precious and vivid memories with the not so old, bringing back to life conditions and situations of period long gone. Nostalgia and melancholy for a past greatness were all over the place…
The stars of this “memory lane visit” back to the old life of the Armenian community were Moses Elmadjian, Levon Sarian and Mayda Nshanian. English, Armenian, Greek and Turkish could be heard together during the whole time, reflecting the once multicultural Armenomahallas/Ermeni mahallesi - unfortunately, today inhabited mainly by illegal Anatolian settlers. The younger ones heard the not so young remembering whose home was each house and stories of the Hay Agoump, the AGBU and AYMA; for many, it was their first visit outside the old AYMA club, at the southern end of Tanzimat street, located just south of a Turkish army watchtower.
Even though a multilingual sign informed us that taking photographs was not allowed, the Turkish (-Cypriot?) soldier allowed us to take pictures and videos from the so-called “Garden of Peace”, standing on the occupied Roccas bastion, with the flags of Turkey and the so-called “TRNC” flying towards the government-controlled side. A few people asked me to dig my archives and send them the picture of the club as it was between 1961-1963, so as to compare and contrast with today’s situation. And, indeed, things were much different back then. By some providence of God, perhaps, AYMA is the southernmost building standing today on Tanzimat street, while before 1963-1964 there were at least 2-3 more houses…
Amongst the things we saw was the votive site for an Ottoman şehit (martyr), located on a small road near Zahra street. The view from Zahra and Tanzimat streets, overlooking the Ledra Palace hotel and the moat, once known as “Haygagan barisb” (Armenian garden) was simply amazing. However things have changed since then ...
There was a lot more to see, things we did not have time to see or we missed, such as the beautiful inscription on the side entrance of the old Sinanian house, in Hayadar Terkeren with the date 1791. But the most rewarding of our visit was an exclusive tour to the construction site of the old Armenian church compound on Victoria street, thanks to the arrangements that Simon Aynedjian made with UNDP’s associate Pelin Akın. Pelin took a good half an hour to explain to us the progress of the restoration process, answer any questions we may had, exchange ideas and information and give us an insight to this great project, expected to be completed in January 2012. We all look forward to the completion of this project, which will hopefully turn the heart of yesterday’s Armenian-Cypriot community into a cultural and religious attraction. |

- The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) ruled on Tuesday that the Turkish government’s prosecution under Article 301 of its penal code with respect to Dr. Taner Akçam’s public views on the Armenian Genocide violated Akçam’s right to freedom of expression under Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has pledged to continue assisting in the search for a solution to the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, stressing the need for both sides to reach an agreement. Medvedev spoke about his impressions from regular meetings with the Azeri and Armenian Presidents, Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan, at a meeting with young people last Thursday. "In the end, the settlement of this very complicated, but solvable problem depends on the goodwill of the two nations and the two Presidents, if they hear each other, move a little bit forward to meet each other halfway and find compromises," the Russian President said.
- Serzh Sargsyan sent an urgent message of condolences to the President of the Republic of Turkey Abdullah Gül regarding the earthquake that occurred in the territory of Turkey and offered Armenia's specialized rescue division to be on alert to be able to reach the epicenter and immediately start rescue operations.
- Armenia will spend in 2012 as much budgetary funds for tourism development as in 2011, stated Deputy Minister of Economy Ara Petrosyan. Petrosyan said that next year those funds will again be mainly spent to organize exhibitions, ads - both in Armenia and abroad, as well as for organizing the visits of representatives of prestigious publications to Armenia. Armenia spent around 50 million drams (approx. $135,000) for the development of tourism in 2011.
- Armenian Americans will join on Capitol Hill with the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues on Tuesday, Oct. 25, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Republic of Armenia's rebirth as an independent country, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

ISRAELI APACHE HELICOPTERS IN MILITARY EXERCIES IN CYPRUS |

CyprusNews report and other combined local sources - Six Israeli Apache and Sikorsky helicopters landed in Larnaca Airport with government permission on October 23rd, said Defence Minister Demetris Eliades. The military helicopters are here to do exercises within a new military cooperation between Israel and Cyprus.
The Cyprus government has gone ahead with a contract with Noble Energy to explore for hydrocarbons in Block 12, an area which borders Israel's gas field Leviathan.
The government's right is upheld by the EU, Greece, US, Israel and Russia, all of which have made statements condemning Turkey's threats towards the island and supporting its right to exploit resources in its sovereign territory.
Defence Ministry sources said that if Turkey proceeds with actual exploration for undersea hydrocarbons, the government's approach will be different. |

- WOMENS BOXING: Losing the final against Tatar Gulzum of Turkey, Armenia’s Armine Sinabyan (under 64kg) grabbed silver at the European Women Boxing Championships in Rotterdam, Germany. Sinabyan is the only Armenian female boxer who won a medal in the event.
- TENNIS: David Nalbandian pulled out of Stockholm Open quarter finals due to leg injury.
- FOOTBALL: Armenia beat Slovakia 2-1 and lost 102 against Greece in U-19 EURO 2012 qualifier. Yerevan will be hosting U-19 EURO 2012 Group 10 qualifiers Oct 21 through 26, with the group winner to make it to the next stage.
- BOXING: Misha Aloyan, Baku-hosted AIBA World Boxing Championships’ gold winner, will apply to registry to change his name to Mikhail. The 23-year-old Armenia-born Yezidi said it’s traditional among his people to give diminutive names to children (Misha diminutive to Mikhail).
- FOOTBALL: UEFA refused to cancel Armenia goalkeeper Roman Berezovsky’s red card, stated the President of the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA) Ruben Hayrapetyan. The refusal obligates Berezovsky to missing 1 official match as part of the national team.
- WEIGHTLIFTING: Armenia's squad continues preparation for 2011 World Weightlifting Championships. At 2011 World Weightlifting Championships due November 5-13 in Paris, participants are given a chance to win 2012 London Olympics entry. At the 2010 Antalya-hosted World Championships the squad has already won 4 entries to 2012 London Olympics out of 4 possible.
- WOMENS BOXING: At Brandenburg Halle in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany, Susi Kentikian (29-0, 16 KOs) added another strap to her ever-growing assortment of titles after a one-sided drubbing of tough but technically weak 19-year old Thai boxer Teeraporn Pannimit (14-4, 5 KOs). The German Armenian, who won a sweepout decision, 100-90 across the board, is now WIBF, WBA and WBO flyweight champion.
- KARATE: Armenia will be hosting an Open Contact Combat Championship. The championship will host 230 sportsmen aged 6-16, with the top 8 fighters to gain an entry to European Taekwondo Junior Championships in Cyprus. The Championship is organized by Armenian Aiki Kendo Karate Federation.
- WEIGHTLIFTING: The International Weightlifting Federation published the list of ten weightlifters that are banned as a result of the anti-doping tests conducted during the competitions held in 2011. The list includes two representatives from Armenia: European silver medalist Elen Grigoryan and European bronze medalist Gevorik Poghosyan. The athletes will be banned from competing until 2015.
- FOOTBALL: Armenia, having 608 points, is ranked 46 in a new ranking list of national teams issued by FIFA. Top ten includes Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Uruguay, Brazil, Italy, England, Greece, Portugal and Argentina. Denmark shares 10th place with Argentina. Denmark and Italy are Armenia’s opponents in the 2014 World Cup qualifying group.

Thursday 20 October 2011 - The terrorist organizations will fail to achieve their goals.
The statement came from Abdullah Buksur, chairman of the Ankara-based Turkic World Human Rights Association, well-known human rights activist, while commenting on recent terrorism acts in Turkey.
“Azerbaijan and Turkey have been subject to terrorism for more than 20 years. Terrorist organizations like PKK, ASALA and ARF Dashnaktsoutiun are enemies of not only the two countries, but also the entire humankind,” Buksur said.
These organizations seek to achieve their goals by weakening Azerbaijan and Turkey, the human rights activist added.
“Despite all these, Azerbaijan and Turkey should fight terrorism jointly as these terrorist organizations try to weaken and split both countries. But their efforts will backlash one day,” Buksur noted. |
WEARING EMPORIO ARMANI CONSIDERED ARMENIAN PROPAGANDA IN TURKEY, PUNISHABLE BY LAW |
October 17, 2011 - News.am - Bolis - Turkish press widely covered Taraf daily’s columnist Roni Margulies’ funny story about three unlucky Turks, who were found guilty of wearing Emporio Armani t-shirts and thus carrying out Armenian propaganda.
In his article, Margulies presents the three Turks’ self-defending speeches made in the court. “…a merchant asked me why I’m wearing that t-shirt and called the police…I don’t think I was making propaganda,” said the first defendant.
The second defendant noted that he already gave testimony to the gendarmerie, insisting: “I didn’t have ulterior motives…That t-shirt is a very well-known Italian brand…I don’t find myself guilty.”
The third defendant likewise did not find himself to be guilty, underscoring that the t-shirt was a gift from his mother, since it is a famous Italian brand.
The article also notes that the three translators, who had come as a result of a public announcement by Town Hall of Avsha Island, where this incident occurred, confirmed that Emporio Armani means “Armenian Empire,” and subsequently the defendants were sentenced to life in prison. |
