The Epic Women: the Representation of Armenian Queens in the Buzandaran Patmut‘iwnk‘
- David Zakarian
Mon. 3 February, 4-5 pm, Pembroke College, The Henderson Building, Henderson Seminar Room
The representation of Queen P‘aṙanjem and Queen Zarmanduxt in the Buzandaran Patmut‘iwnk‘ is an important document that sheds inter alia some light on the institution of queenship in early medieval Armenia. This lecture elaborates on the extent of power and independence that Armenian queens possessed in a largely male--‐centred society of Arsacid Armenia. In addition, the controversial issue of Queen P‘aṙanjem's marriages will be discussed revealing the presence of the Iranian marriage traditions in the Armenian milieu even after Christianisation.
