FLOW OF ARMENIAN SYRIANS HAS DOUBLED
Roza Hovhannisyan, Reporter
08 September 2015, 14:19

The number of refugees from Syria leaving for Europe has increased
recently, the number of Armenian Syrians travelling to Armenia
increased too. Firdus Zakaryan, the chair of the committee dealing
with the issues of Armenian Syrians in the Ministry of Diaspora told
Lragir.am that the number of Armenian Syrians has increased by 4000
compared with the beginning of the year.

Firdus Zakaryan said the main issue today remains rental of apartments
for Armenian Syrians. In the past few months the flow of Armenian
Syrians doubled, the picture is the same as in 2012 when they started
moving to Armenia massively.

With the increase of flow of Armenian Syrians, the Armenian government
cannot resolve the problem of providing temporary accommodation for
them. The state assistance to Armenian Syrians in the recent years is
mainly solutions relating to education, medical care, documents. The
government does not provide permanent or temporary accommodation for
Armenian Syrians.

"We are concerned about the issue of rent of accommodation, this
is already a challenge to us. We have to turn to international and
benevolent organizations to get help because we will face a problem.

The flow is too big, we cannot manage," Zakaryan said.

He said that the Armenian Syrians arriving in Armenia are usually
socially insecure because they have lost all their property. Today
the government does not have a program of providing accommodation in
the initial stage. Firdus Zakaryan said the Armenian Syrians make
a decision on how they want to live, and the Ministry of Diaspora
intends to raise funds for rental of apartments for the least insecure
families through different organizations.

In answer to the question whether there is no a need at this stage
for the government to develop a plan and provide accommodation to
Armenian Syrians until they integrate and find jobs in Armenia,
Firdus Zakaryan said, "When we say assistance, those are complex
approaches, the government is also meant. Everything possible is
done through different organizations, the problems are different,
therefore I don't want to separate one from the other."

The government official informed us that the majority of Armenian
Syrians arriving in Armenia want to live in Yerevan. "The problem
is that they have arrived and they want to stay in Yerevan. If we
can pay the apartment rent, they can rent accommodation in Spitak,
Vayk, Artashat and other cities for 15-20 thousand drams, they prefer
Yerevan where the rents are higher. And this is a big hindrance for
us. But on the other hand one can understand them because they can
find suitable jobs in Yerevan," Zakaryan said.

LORD CAREY: 100 YEARS AFTER ARMENIAN AND ASSYRIAN
GENOCIDE, THE SAME HAPPENING IN SYRIA
07 Sep 2015
Siranush Ghazanchyan

Britain has a duty to rescue Syria's Christians, Lord George Carey,
a former archbishop of Canterbury, writes in an article published by
The Telegraph.

"The dramatic and disturbing developments of the past few days have
introduced a new, heart-rending dimension to this refugee crisis.

Undoubtedly, the most disturbing aspect is just how impotent Europe
is proving itself to be. If the EU is not resilient in the face of
this disaster, it could be torn apart," the article reads.

According to the author, "Syria's Christians are the most vulnerable
and repeatedly targeted victims of this conflict." "Indeed, a hundred
years after the Armenian and Assyrian genocide, in which over a million
Christians are estimated to have been killed by Ottoman Muslims,
the same is happening today in the form of an ethnic cleansing of
Christians in the region. Christians have been crucified, beheaded,
raped, and subjected to forced conversion. The so-called Islamic
State and other radical groups are openly glorifying the slaughter
of Christians."

"Britain should make Syrian Christians a priority because they are
a particularly vulnerable group. Furthermore, we are a Christian
nation with an established Church so Syrian Christians will find
no challenge to integration. The churches are already well-prepared
and eager to offer support and accommodation to those escaping the
conflict," Lord Carey writes.

POPE CELEBRATES SANTA MARTA MASS WITH ARMENIAN PATRIARCH
07 Sep 2015

The martyrdom of many Christians "with the complicit silence of many
powers that could stop it", was denounced by Pope Francis during his
homily at Mass celebrated this morning in Casa Santa Marta, inspired
by the Gospel story of the wrath of the scribes and Pharisees who
discuss how to kill Jesus because he had performed a miracle on a
Saturday, AsiaNews reports.

Mass was concelebrated this morning with the new Patriarch of Cilicia
of the Armenians, Gregory Peter XX Ghabroyan (pictured), Cardinal
Leonardo Sandri, prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches,
and all the bishops of the Synod of the Armenian Catholic Patriarchal
Church.

During his reflections, the Pope once again evoked the persecution
suffered by Christians, even today, "perhaps more than in the early
days": persecuted, killed, driven out, stripped just for being
Christians. "Dear brothers and sisters, there is no Christianity
without persecution. Remember the last of the Beatitudes: when
they bring you into the synagogues, and persecute you, revile you,
this is the fate of a Christian. Today too, this happens before the
whole world, with the complicit silence of many powerful leaders who
could stop it. We are facing this Christian fate: go on the same path
of Jesus."

The Pope recalled, "One of many great persecutions: that of the
Armenian people": "The first nation to convert to Christianity: the
first. They were persecuted just for being Christians," he said. "The
Armenian people were persecuted, chased away from their homeland,
helpless, in the desert." This story - he observed - began with Jesus:
what people did, "to Jesus, has during the course of history been
done to His body, which is the Church."

"Today," the Pope continued, "I would like, on this day of our first
Eucharist, as brother Bishops, dear brother Bishops and Patriarch and
all of you Armenian faithful and priests, to embrace you and remember
this persecution that you have suffered, and to remember your holy
ones, your many saints who died of hunger, in the cold, under torture,
[cast] into the wilderness only for being Christians."

The Pontiff also remembered the broader persecution of Christians in
the present day. "We now, in the newspapers, hear the horror of what
some terrorist groups do, who slit the throats of people just because
[their victims] are Christians. We think of the Egyptian martyrs,
recently, on the Libyan coast, who were slaughtered while pronouncing
the name of Jesus."

Pope Francis prayed that the Lord might, "give us a full understanding,
to know the Mystery of God who is in Christ," and who, "carries the
Cross, the Cross of persecution, the Cross of hatred, the Cross of
that, which comes from the anger," of persecutors - an anger that is
stirred up by "the Father of Evil":

"May the Lord, today, make us feel within the body of the Church,
the love for our martyrs and also our vocation to martyrdom. We do
not know what will happen here: we do not know. Only Let the Lord
give us the grace, should this persecution happen here one day, of
the courage and the witness that all Christian martyrs have shown,
and especially the Christians of the Armenian people."

ARMENIA FRUSTRATE DENMARK IN EURO 2016 QUALIFIER DRAW
Fox Soccer
Sept 7 2015

Denmark's Euro 2016 qualification hopes suffered a blow as they were
held to a 0-0 draw in Armenia.

Morten Olsen's side are level on 12 points with Portugal at the top
of Group I, having played two games more, but are just a point ahead
of third placed Albania, who host Portugal later on Monday.

Yura Movsisyan and Artem Simonyan missed Armenia's best chances in
the second half, while Nicklas Bendtner saw a shot saved by Gevorg
Kasparov in Yerevan.

Denmark only have one game left in qualifying with their chances
of making next year's tournament in France resting on their trip to
Portugal next month.

Tottenham's Christian Eriksen was ruled out with a knee injury for
Denmark and the visitors missed the midfielder's spark during a drab
first half.

They went close when Riza Durmisi's second-minute free kick was turned
wide by Kasparov while Karlen Mkrtchyan fired wide from distance for
the hosts.

But Armenia, who climbed off the bottom of the table with a point,
frustrated their visitors who could only muster two shots on target
before half time.

Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel easily claimed Robert Arzumanyan's
25-yard effort early in the second half and then survived a scare on
66 minutes.

Ruslan Koryan slipped Movsisyan through on goal with only Schmeichel
to beat but the striker fired into the side-netting from 12 yards.

Bendtner's drive was then saved by Kasparov before Simonyan could have
won it for the hosts with two minutes left but drilled wide from the
edge of the area.

Anya Pogharian, Montreal teen inventor, takes portable dialysis
machine to the world 18-year-old tests her invention on real
blood
during internship at Héma-Québec
Aug 17, 2015

Teen inventor Anya Pogharian draws worldwide attention
Anya Pogharian invents $500 dialysis machine with at-home
potential

Anya Pogharian never thought her high school science fair project
would bring her international attention and job opportunities from
around the world.

"India, Australia, Russia, Armenia — like everywhere, just everywhere.
South America. You name it, I got a message from there," said Pogharian.

Ontario-based health-care firm Baxter Corp. offered to sponsor her
and provide her with filters.

Pogharian said she heard from dialysis patients right across Canada,
congratulating her and wishing her success.

She was 17 when she invented a cheap, portable dialysis machine.

CBC News first published her story in February . Pogharian was
inspired by volunteering at a hospital dialysis unit.

Dialysis is the process of cleaning waste from the blood. It's typically
used for people who have kidney disease. The treatment takes about f
our hours a couple of times per week.

Pogharian said she's been working non-stop to improve her portable
machine, which costs about $500 to build. Currently, dialysis machines
cost about $30,000.

"To date, I have been working crazy hours on this project...I've stopped
counting." 25

Héma-Québec , the non-profit organization that manages the province's
blood products and human tissue and ensures the safety of blood supply,
offered her an internship, allowing her to try her prototype on real blood.

Pogharian and her team hoped it would filter four litres of blood in two
and half hours. It took only 25 minutes.

She said its efficacy, simplicity and portability make it ideal for the
developing world and in disaster zones.

It could also help people closer to home.

Patient Philippe Ouaknine said dialysis treatments, which often took
several hours every other day, kept him from working and seeing his
family.

"My mother lives outside the city. So we had to time [it to] make sure
that I was coming back for my treatment."

Home units do exist but are expensive and rarely available through
Quebec's health care system.

Ouaknine said Pogharian's invention would revolutionize patients'
lives.

That's exactly what Pogharian is hoping for.
"I just know how difficult it is. And I can't even imagine having to live
with that," she said.

Pogharian expects her machine to hit the market in a couple of years.
