Armenian Church celebrates the feast of Annunciation
The Feast of Annunciation is one of the major feasts in the Armenian Church. It is based on the Gospel story of the Annunciation of Gabriel to Mary while she was at the house of Elizabeth, the Mother of John the Baptist. The feast is celebrated by the Armenian Church on April 7th.
In the Gospel of Luke (1:26-) we read: “God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favour with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
The Armenian Church teaches that at the time of the Annunciation, the Holy Spirit came upon Mary and she was cleansed of the original sin, as she was to be the bearer of God’s Word incarnate.
St. Mary’s is our role model to follow, to live our lives through her mediation so that we are ready to become vessels of God’s will. As St. Paul says in his second letter to the Corinthians: "For we are the temple of the living God”. God has reaffirmed this: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people” (2 Cor. 6:16).
In Armenia, April 7th is Mother's Day. On this occasion, we pray for all mothers and sisters and extend our congratulations to all of them. The Western and Byzantine Churches celebrate the Feast of Annunciation on March 25th.
Palm Sunday and Holy Week
Palm Sunday marks Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem. When Jesus entered Jerusalem “they took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Blessed is the King of Israel!” (John 12:13).

The week following Palm Sunday is known as Holy Week and each day of that week, Monday to Saturday, is called ‘Holy’ because each day of this week symbolises events that took place after our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem. The events end with the celebration of the glorious Resurrection.
The readings from the Holy Gospels describe that period from Jesus' entry into Jerusalem until the fulfilment of the divine plan of salvation. The lections from the Old Testament read during this period and the hymns remind us of the need for salvation.

During this week, as during Great Lent, the faithful are invited to continue their fasting and ardent prayers.
