Summary

We, the undersigned, petition His Holiness Karekin II to reverse current policies that pertain to the centralization of control and unilateral decision making of local church matters. We ask that the traditional democratic principles of our Armenian Apostolic Church be restored and preserved. This request includes: renewing respect towards and adherence to the principle of separating spiritual matters (responsibility of clergy) from structural, financial, administrative, and legal matters (managed by laity); establishing a constructive practice of dialogue with our communities and all believers therein; and listening to our faithful in their wish to choose their own church status and priest.

Some Thoughts on the occasion of 24 April

Dear friends,

My apologies for "invading" your electronic space again. Tomorrow is 24 April, our most sacred day coinciding with Easter this year. I couldn't help not thinking about our lost ancestors and homeland during the genocide.

In April 2009 I was honoured to be the guest speaker at the United Remembrance Day in Toronto. Below is the link that leads to the site that shows the speech. A brief introduction of less than three minutes is in English and the rest in Armenian.

Two years have gone by since that day of commemoration. If I were to re-edit or amend, would I have added anything? I would have cited two significant matters: the infamous "Protocols" and the incessant exodus of our people from Armenia in alarming numbers. Both probably substantiate the main conclusion of the speech that more than ever Hayasdan is in danger and the future of "Hay Tad" is questionable if we don't take drastic steps.

In late October Ahmet Davutoğlu, the foreign minister of Turkey, was in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in China. Among other statements he made there was the following: “We are visiting the land of our ancestors…one of the most important cultural spots of the Turkic peoples’ world.”

In addition to throwing the monkey wrench into the fabrications of Turkish fabulists and “historians” who claim Turks are indigenous to Anatolia, Davutoğlu's statement and visit were typical of other senior Turkish officials in recent months. Together with President Abdullah Gül and Prime Minister Reccep Erdoğan , Davutoğlu pops up regularly in various capitals these days, sort of “If it’s Tuesday, this must be the day Gül-Erdoğan-Davutoğlu come to inspect the honour guard in some capital…Baghdad, Brasilia, Moscow, Tehran, London, Damascus, Baku, Sofia…”

The Three Musketeers of Ankara are all over the map, making brave statements about Turkey being the bridge between the East and the West, between the North and the South, Turkey straddling the crossroads of the East and West divide, Turkey spanning Christian Europe and Moslem Middle East, Turkey the intermediary between the U.S and Iran… On and go the quotidian drumbeat.
