DONALD TRUMP SCARES MUSLIMS BUT...IS HE FOR REAL? OR PART OF A DASTARDLY PLOT TO USHER IN THE WICKED WITCH?

‘Muslims will be banned from entering America’, the Donald proposes. Bit extreme. Good job he did not go one step further: ‘Deport all Muslims from America!’
Radical solution, yet there are historical precedents. In 1609 King Philip III of Spain decreed the expulsion of the Moriscos. ‘Little Moors’. Spaniards of Muslim origins, technically baptised but secretly professing Islam. Originally from Granada, the last Islamic stronghold in Spain, the Moriscos had been forced to settle in Northern parts of the Iberian peninsula. They were accused of plotting rebellion and of aiding Catholic Spain’s mortal enemies, the Ottoman Turks. At last, deemed impossible to assimilate, the unhappy Moriscos were uprooted in mass, transported by ships to North Africa and dumped there. Hundreds of thousands of them.
Bad, but a worse fate might have befallen them. If a certain Bishop Martin de Salvatierra had had his way, that is. He argued how perilous it was to send the Moors away to Algeria and Morocco. They would have swollen the ranks of Spain’s foes. Instead he boldly suggested the castration of all Morisco men, so that they could no longer breed and propagate their kind. Another ‘solution’ was to brand them all on the face, to better recognise them and keep them cowed and under control.
Trump made no similar suggestions…Yet.
Is the Donald like Hitler? A question seriously asked. Some invoke the spectre of the persecution of the Jews, Kristallnacht, pogroms, concentration camps and so on. That is reminiscent of what writer Simon Jenkins has called ‘reductio ad hitlerum’. To clinch a rhetorical argument sooner or later you will make a comparison between your adversary and Hitler. As the defunct German Fuhrer is now degraded to a universal cipher of evil, the analogy performs not a logical but an effective emotive function. But there lurks an irony. Given the on-going conflict in the Holy Land, there are probably no parts of the globe in which Adolf has more admirers and followers than in the Arab and Islamic world. Anti-Semitism, hatred of the Jews, burning desire of the destruction of the Jewish state, to kick all Jews out of Israel are feelings palpably present amongst too many Muslims. I am sorry to say that but…it is true.
Paradoxically, the leader of the Third Reich did not display a particular dislike of Islam. From Martin Bormann’s Table Talks you learn that on the night of 12th January 1942 Hitler fancied himself as a Khan of Muslim Tatars. And he believed that Arabs were already praying for the victory of the German Armies. To throw out the British colonial rulers and their Zionists protégés, I figure. Hitler only regretted that, being a vegetarian, he would not have been able to feast on mutton together with Arab sheikhs.
A group Trump has carefully avoided to offend is the Jews. No need to be Machiavelli to figure why. However, you can watch a video online showing him addressing a gathering of ‘Republicans for Israel’. Interestingly, he refused to commit himself to recognising Jerusalem as the official capital of the Jewish state. In that, he is unlike most of his fellow Republicans. That points to the Donald’s political cunning. He shrewdly realises that you don’t enter a negotiation for a future Palestinian state with a pre-conceived Zionist notion like that. So, maybe a President Trump would be capable of delivering the hitherto impossible: a lasting and just peace between Israel and Palestine. Perhaps his right-wing credentials would stand him in good stead with the Netanyahu gang? Not unlike the staunch anti-Communist Nixon bringing Communist China in from the cold.
What puzzles the priest, however, is that the Donald is a successful businessman. Does he really intend to ban ALL foreign Muslims? Unless he has been smoking the wrong stuff, how on earth can he suggest Saudi oil Princes, Qataris and other filthy-rich Gulf potentates should be stopped from entering the US? Heading to places like glittering Las Vegas, to which they flock gambling and whoring? After 9/11 even the hated George W. Bush made sure members of the Bin Laden family living in America were quickly and safely spirited away. Saudi billionaires are too wealthy, too important to British-Saudi relations, to US economy and finance to be scapegoated. Money talks. Or would Trump’s exclusion order affect only the poor, the lowly and the obscure? But wasn’t bad guy Osama Bin Laden also loaded? He shows how the rich too can be Jihadis. Bit of a problem, eh?
Relax. Trump will never become President. It is as sure as eggs are eggs. Too many people are scared of him. But there is an even worse scenario.  Could he perhaps be a plant? I mean, could the Donald, the outrageous but smart clown sending shock waves across the Western liberal establishment be part of a diabolical conspiracy? A dastardly, vile plot to elect Hillary Clinton, the Wicked Witch, to the Presidency? Too horrible a nightmare, too fiendish a scheme to contemplate. Still, as Hamlet would say, there are more things in heaven and earth...
