OPEN HOUSE LONDON

ST SARKIS ARMENIAN CHURCH

Saturday, 20 September 2008, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm

Iverna Gardens, W8

(Tube: High Street Kensington)

Through the initiative of the Armenian Institute, the Church of St Sarkis will open its doors to visitors for the fourth consecutive year. Designed by the architects Mews and Davis and consecrated in 1923, this small and exotic building is closely remodelled on the bell tower in the monastery of Haghpat in Armenia. Further additions were made in 1937 and 1950. The building is faced with Portland stone and is crowned with a 7–sided open belfry. Inside there is a rich altar of marble, onyx and lapis lazuli. There will be people on hand to answer questions and a descriptive booklet on St Sarkis and the Armenian Church, commissioned by the Church Trustees and published by the Armenian Institute, will be on sale.
