The Earthquake of Spitak Devastated Artik 23 Years Ago Now, There's Hope for a Better Tomorrow
Artik, a small town on the outskirts of Gyumri in Armenia's Shirak province, was hit particularly hard by the devastating Spitak Earthquake of 1988. The catastrophe took the lives of at least 25,000 people throughout the area, leveling to the ground much of the region, including Gyumri--the second largest city of Armenia. This week, on the 23rd anniversary of the quake, we remember the tragedy but we also acknowledge the continued resolve of the Armenian nation to rebuild and revive this noble region.
