ARMENIAN CHURCH OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND
PRIMATE RETURNS TO HOLY ETCHMIADZIN
His Grace Bishop Vahan Hovhanessian returned to London Last Sunday, following a weeklong stat at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. During his visit to the Mother See, Bishop Vahan met with His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, to update His Holiness about the various programmes and activities of the Armenian Church of Great Britain and Ireland, and to discuss the finalization of the diocesan bylaws. The bylaws, when ratified by His Holiness will serve as the ecclesiastical constitution that will unite all the churches in in London (St. Sarkis and St. Yeghiche) with the oldest Armenian Church in the Western Hemisphere, (the Holy Trinity Church in Manchester), and with the Mission Parishes in Birmingham, Cardiff, and Dublin. This will create a unified and strong Armenian Church Diocese in Great Britain and Ireland, based on the canons and teachings of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church. During his stay at the Mother See, H.G. Bishop Vahan participated in the ongoing meeting of the joint committee Etchmiadzin-Cilicia. On Friday, 11 May, the committee concluded its work of preparing a new edition of the text of the Baptismal service with two accompanying booklets one for parents and godparents to help in preparing for the service of Baptism, and the other one including the canonical decrees and decisions regarding the various customs and practices related to the celebration of Baptism. The text and the booklets will be examined by the synods of bishops of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and the Great House of Cilicia in a joined meeting which will take place some time next year. Participating Committee members were: Bishops Arshka Khachatryan, Mikael Ajabahian, Nathan Hovhannysian and Vahan Hovhanessian representing the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and Archbishops Komitas Ohanian and Kegham Khacherian, representing the House of Cilicia. YOUNG PROFESSIONALS’ CONCERT
THE UK is a place that has been attracting musical talents from all around the world for centuries. Since Armenians are no strangers to the world scene of classical music it comes to no surprise that every year there are several talented musicians of Armenian descent who come to established UK musical institutions to further graduate and postgraduate studies. Unfortunately it is not easy for everyone in our community to keep track of those young talents during every step of their development, support them by attending their concerts and feel the pride of yet another Armenian success. AGBU London started a concert series as part of the celebration for the organisation's centenary in 2010 and together with the AGBU London Young Professionals are determined to continue this tradition in an attempt to introduce those musicians to the Armenian public in London. On the 26th of May from 7pm the second of the concert series will take place in the magnificent St. Yeghishe church hall in London. The programme is prepared in such a way as to present to the audience the genius of some famous and some less known Armenian composers by our piano, flute and violin soloists. The tenor and soprano singers in turn will help to make the concert an unforgettable experience. As the minimal donation for entry is less than the cheapest BBC Proms concert ticket, we expect that many of you will come to hear these young Armenian musical talents. For those musicians who would like to take part in next year's concerts please contact us on yp@agbu.otg.uk
