Poetic Justice: Diyarbakir Armenians Baptized at Etchmiadzin
Special for the Armenian Weekly
The homecoming trip of the (no more) hidden Armenians from Diyarbakir to Armenia finally began this week, after months of planning, preparation, resolving issues, and seemingly endless three-way long distance discussions from Diyarbakir to Yerevan and Toronto.

One moment they burst into dancing in the streets as soon as they hear a playful tune, and the next moment they cry uncontrollably at a scene which may mean nothing to passersby but has reminded them of something, someone – all the way back to 1915.
And now, the “new” Armenians of Diyarbakir are strolling in the streets and museums of Yerevan, tiptoeing into the various churches scattered all over Armenia. Emotions are near the surface… One moment they burst into dancing in the streets as soon as they hear a playful tune, and the next moment they cry uncontrollably at a scene which may mean nothing...

Twitter Has Moral Responsibility to #StopAliyev
Twitter—the social network that allows 140-character posts from anyone, anywhere, about anything—rose to public policy prominence by “helping” organize the Arab Spring revolution and spread truths about minorities suffering awful mistreatments across several continents.
stopaliyevThis “giving voice to the voiceless” achieved universally positive endorsements of the Twitter platform, and has helped earn the company a reputation as one helping the Davids face Goliaths. Understandably, these endorsements have been welcomed by Twitter’s hierarchy, including co-founder Jack Dorsey and CEO Dick Costolo, who have on numerous occasions admitted they are proud of the evolution of their communication platform.
However, what should happen when Twitter starts being used by Goliaths to bully Davids? What should happen when those with a voice use Twitter to crush the voiceless? What should happen when Twitter’s “positive” influence on public policy turns...

Impressions from AYF Camp Haiastan

AYF Camp Haiastan, Thank You for My Second Home

By Sanan Malkadjian
There aren’t many words to describe the feeling of being “home” again. Emotions rise and smiles become the norm as you make the AYF Camp Haiastan grounds your home for two weeks. Right when you reach the steps of camp, you realize that everything you need is right in front of you and every second is golden because it ends sooner than you think. The atmosphere and the environment lift your heart. All of the ungers/ungerouhis become like your parents, and the campers become the brothers and sisters you have always wanted.

AYF Camp Haiastan is certainly the best place on Earth. It is a prime example of how the Armenian youth are so powerful. So many Armenians gather around the country to preserve and share their culture. Everyone becomes one big, happy family that you grow and create networks with.
The past two weeks at AYF Camp Haiastan made me realize how lucky I am to be Armenian and how the friendships...

Comeuppance
It’s interesting how news with disparate topics, time, and place is sometimes ironically related.
It seems Abe Foxman and his Anti-Defamation League (ADL) have their panties up in a bunch over the venom being spewed against Jews in Turkey.  This man and organization had no trouble, no qualms, and no pangs of conscience over denying the Armenian Genocide to serve as the lackeys of the Turkish government in the U.S.   Now, we hear their shock and complaining when Turkish public opinion is reverting to, or simply shedding the veil covering, its “real” attitudes toward Jews.
This followed news of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) demanding that Erdogan, who it branded as “arguably the most virulent anti-Israel leader in the world,” return the award he received from the AJC in 2004.  Back then, Erdogan was given the “Profile of Courage” award for working for a peaceful solution in the Middle East and for his commitment to protecting Turkey’s Jewish citizens.  Of...

Rouben Sevak: The Harlot
By Rouben Sevak
 Translated by Tatul Sonentz
It was way past midnight, a muggy night of showers,
Under the wet lantern light you stood there forlorn,
The water sang on the sidewalk, cars ran at random;
You waited there, lingering on that bit of plot of yours.
A strained smile sobbed deep in your sapphire eyes,
There was the strain of pain on your brazen painted lips,
And under the pretty paired decline of your décolletage,
There was no bound to ardors that would last all night.
You were waiting prepared, submissive and compliant,
without love or choice, to offer yourself, eyes shut tight,
To that condescending male who had bread to impart…
I felt a faint flame, like pity, or passion within my heart,
And maybe that night, I would have ceded to you, sister,
If a lone teardrop had not congealed on my cheeks…
It was way past midnight, a muggy night of showers.

Uncle Garabed’s Notebook (Aug. 9, 2014)
Forbearance
Nobody deserves to be praised for goodness unless he is strong enough to be bad, for any other goodness is usually merely inertia or lack of will-power.
… La Rochefoucauld
Armenian Proverb
When God wishes to make a poor man happy, He makes him lose his donkey, and then find it again.
Nomenclature
Evolutionists have substituted Mother Nature for Father God.
From the Word Lab
Cipher: from Arabic sifr, meaning “zero, naught, nothing.”
The Rev. R. Egerton Warburton, being asked for his cipher by a lady, in 1845, wrote back—
A 0 u 0 I 0 thee,
Oh I 0 no 0 but 0 me;
Yet thy 0 my 0 one 0 go,
Till u d 0 the 0 u 0 so.
A cipher you sigh-for, I sigh-for thee,
Oh I sigh-for no cipher but sigh-for me;
Yet thy sigh-for my cipher one cipher go (on-ce I forgo),
Till you de-cipher the cipher you sigh-for so.
