POPE FRANCIS DECLARES ARMENIAN SAINT DOCTOR OF THE
CHURCH
Vatican Radio
Feb 23 2015

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has declared Armenian poet and monk,
Saint Gregory of Narek, a Doctor of the Universal Church. Meeting with
Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Cause of
Saints on Saturday ahead of his departure for Aricca on Lenten retreat,
the Pope confirmed the proposal put forward by the Plenary Session
of the Congregation to confer the title of Doctor of the Universal
Church on the 10th century saint.

St. Gregory of Narek is widely revered as one of the greatest figures
of medieval Armenian religious thought and literature. Born in the
city of Narek in about 950 A.D., St. Gregory came from a line of
scholars and churchmen.

St. Gregory received his education under the guidance of his father,
Bishop Khosrov, author of the earliest commentary on the Divine
Liturgy, and from Anania Vartabed, abbess of Narek Monastery. He and
his two brothers entered monastic life at an early age, and St.

Gregory soon began to excel in music, astronomy, geometry, mathematics,
literature, and theology.

He became a priest at the age of 25 and dedicated himself to God. He
lived most of his life in the monastery of Narek, where he taught at
the monastic school. St. Gregory began his writings with a commentary
on the "Song of Songs," which was commissioned by an Armenian prince.

Despite his reservations that he was too young for the task, the
commentary became famous for its clarity of thought and language and
its excellence of theological presentation.

He also wrote a number of famous letters, sharagans, treasures, odes,
melodies, and discourses. Many of his prayers are included in the
Divine Liturgy celebrated each Sunday in Armenian Churches around
the world.

St. Gregory's masterpiece is considered to be his Book of
Lamentations. Also known as Narek, it is comprised of 95 prayers,
each of which is titled "Conversation with God from the depth of
the heart." A central theme is man's separation from God, and his
quest to reunite with Him. St. Gregory described the work this way:
"Its letters like my body, its message like my soul." He called his
book an "encyclopedia of prayer for all nations." It was his hope
that it would serve as a guide to prayer for people all over the
world. After the advent of movable type, the book was published in
Marseille in 1673, and has been translated into at least 30 languages.

St. Gregory of Narek is remembered by the Armenian Church in October
of each year.

3,300-YEAR-OLD SHRINES THAT WERE USED FOR READING
FUTURE FOUND IN ARMENIAN HILLTOPS
International Business Times UK
Feb 19 2015
By Sean Martin

Archaeologists have unearthed three shrines dating back around 3,300
years in some Armenian hilltops.

Discovered in a hilltop fortress in Gegharot, Armenia, experts believe
that the shrines were used by rulers at the time to make predictions
for the future.

Each of the shines consisted of a solitary room which contained a
clay basin full of ash and ceramic vessels, Live Science reported.

Artefacts such as stamp seals, clay figures and animal bones --
knucklebones of cows, sheep and goat -- with markings were found in
the locations.

It is thought by the discoverers, Adam Smith, a Cornell University
professor, and Cornell graduate Jeffrey Leon, that the rulers and
mystics may have burned some of the items and imbibed in alcohol to
blur their mind during the divination practices.

Smith and Leon recently wrote in the American Journal of Archaeology:
"The logic of divination presumes that variable pathways articulate
the past, present and future, opening the possibility that the link
between a current situation and an eventual outcome might be altered.

The name of the society and its leaders who once utilised these
shrines is currently unknown.

The duo found evidence of three different types of divination at the
shrines, including osteomancy - the reading of the future through
rituals involving burned animal bones.

Smith told Live Science: "You would roll them and, depending upon
whether the scorched side or the marked side came up, you would [get]
a different interpretation."

Evidence that the diviners used stones to try and predict the future
was also found at the site.

It is thought that the shrines were in use for about 100 years until
the fortress was destroyed, seemingly along with the society that
controlled it, through conflict.

STARBUCKS TO REMOVE OFFENSIVE POSTERS FROM
STORES

Apologizes for upsetting customers
ARA KHACHATOURIAN

While ordering their morning drinks on Wednesday, many Starbucks
customers were shocked to see posters depicting women wearing Armenian
traditional costumes under the Turkish Crescent and Star.

After inquiries from Asbarez, a spokesperson said that Starbucks has
already begun the removal of the offensive posters and apologized
for upsetting their customers.

Serving as a place for the community to connect is core to our business
and we strive to be locally relevant in all of our stores.

We missed the mark here and we apologize for upsetting our customers
and the community. We have removed this art in our Mulholland &
Calabasas store in Woodland Hills and are working to make this
right,” a Starbucks spokesperson told Asbarez via email. The
spokesperson said that the company was “looking into this to
ensure this image is not in any other Starbucks locations.”

Starbucks did not comment about what prompted the company to display
the posters.

The swift response to this matter can also be attributed to a wave of
protests on social media from Armenians who were insulted and taken
aback by what appeared to be lack of sensitivity from Starbucks, a
company that prides itself on social justice and social issues. The
Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region immediately
launched a social media campaign urging followers to document locations
and call Starbucks to complain with #BoycottStarbucks message.

Starbucks was facing a “Venti” debacle, when angry
posts began to circulate on Facebook and Twitter, some calling for
a boycott of the largest coffee retailer in the world. This was yet
another sign of collective grassroots activism on the part of the
Armenian community.

In addressing the issue with Starbucks, Asbarez pointed to many
actions by the Turkish government that were in stark contrast to the
company's standards of ethics.

Why would Starbucks promote a country that in the last year
was deemed as the largest jailer of journalists; has shut down Twitter
and YouTube in its campaign to oppress freedom of speech; has jailed
demonstrators for reform; whose president has called for legislation
to categorize women as second class citizens; and continues to deny
the Armenian Genocide, which killed more than 1.5 million people in
1915 among other things, which include calling Israel a terrorist
state,” Asbarez inquired from Starbucks corporate communications.

If readers spot more of these posters, please alert Starbucks customer
service at 800.782.7282.

WHICH COUNTRY HAS THE WORLD'S BEST DIET?
African countries have some of the best diets in the world,
according to a new study
By Saffron Alexander
19 Feb 2015

A new study has revealed that African countries such as Chad and Guyana
have some of the healthiest diets in the world, while the people in
European countries including Belgium, Lativa and Hungary eat the worst.

Research published in The Lancet Global Health journal looked at the
diets of almost 4.5 billion adults across 187 countries.

It found that although the worldwide consumption of healthy foods
has increased during the last two decades, so has the the intake of
unhealthy foods such as processed meat and sweetened drinks.

Between 1990 and 2010, high-income nations saw the most improvement
in their diet quality as, on average, they reduced their consumption
of unhealthy foods and ate more healthy products.

Despite this, people living in the wealthiest regions of these nations,
such as Canada, Australia, Western Europe, and the US, have some of
the poorest quality diets in the world, because they have the highest
levels of unhealthy food consumption.

Whilst high income nations saw improvement over the last 20 years,
countries like China and India have apparently seen no improvement
in the quality of their diets.

The study found that people in the Mediterranean nations of Turkey
and Greece largely consumed healthy foods, as did low-income countries
such as Chad and Mali. Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Krgyzstan and other
central European countries scored low for healthy food intake.

Researcher Dariush Mozaffarian said: "There is a particularly urgent
need to focus on improving diet quality among poorer populations. If
we do nothing, undernutrition will be rapidly eclipsed by obesity and
non-communicable diseases, as is already been seen in India, China,
and other middle income countries."

This map of overall dietary patterns, where green shows the healthiest
diets and red the least, clearly shows Africa as the healthiest
continent

The study also found that, on average, women had better diets compared
to men, and older adults better than younger ones.

Dr Fumiaki Imamura, from the University of Cambridge said: "By 2020,
projections indicate that non-communicable diseases will account for
75 per cent of all deaths. Improving diet has a crucial role to play
in reducing this burden.

"Our findings have implications for governments and international
bodies worldwide. The distinct dietary trends based on healthy
and unhealthy foods, we highlight, indicate the need to understand
different, multiple causes of these trends, such as agricultural,
food industry, and health policy. Policy actions in multiple domains
are essential to help people achieve optimal diets to control the
obesity epidemic and reduce non-communicable diseases in all regions
of the world."

Countries with the healthiest diets:

Chad Mali Cameroon Guyana Tunisia Sierra Leone Laos Nigeria Guatemala
French Guiana

Countries with the unhealthiest diets:

Armenia Hungary Belgium USA Russia Iceland Latvia Brazil Colombia

TURKS DEMAND THAT ARMENIA AND FRANCE BE DISQUALIFIED
FROM EUROVISION SONG CONTEST
February 19, 2015

It was reported that Armenia will be represented with the song
"Don't Deny".

The Turks assume that Armenia will be presenting a song on the occasion
of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide and with lyrics that are
strictly against Turkey, reports Artsakhpress.

All Turkish fans of the song contest have launched a petition on
change.org, demanding that the European Broadcasting Union disqualify
Armenia since, according to the existing rules, politicizing the
contest shall be prohibited.

The organizers of the petition complain that the EBU has not responded
to Armenia's action.

The organizers also demand that France be disqualified because it
was France's representative who declared that the song was going to
be dedicated to the Armenian Genocide.

Eurovision Song Contest 2015 will be held in Vienna on May 19th,
21st and 23rd with the slogan "Building Bridges". The Department of
Public Relations of Armenia's First Channel reported that the group
of creators at Armenian Public Television, staying true to this year's
slogan, inspired by the idea of the Forget Me Not as the symbol of the
100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and guided by the desire
of several Diaspora Armenians who have always supported Armenia's
delegates at the song contest, has decided to present a new format
for participation in the contest.

Attaching importance to the idea of peace, unity and tolerance,
the group of creators at Armenian Public Television has decided to
consolidate the new generation of Armenians who became scattered
across five continents (Europe, Asia, Americas, Africa, Australia)
in 1915. The group includes 5 singers of Armenian descent who will
be representing the five petals of the Forget Me Not. They will be
joined by another participant from Armenia who will bring the petals
together. The group to be formed for the song contest will be called
"Genealogy" (6 artists, 6 destinies and 1 story).

INFORMATION ABOUT TAMARA

Tamar Kaprelian is an Armenian-American singer and songwriter currently
residing in the New York City, USA. With honest and uplifting songs,
Tamar takes listeners on a journey across the arcs of relationships
and personal growth.

Being born in the USA to Armenian parents, Tamar Mardirossian chose
her mother's maiden name, "Kaprelian," in honor of her grandfather who
passed away a few years before her career began. Tamar is incredibly
proud of her heritage and is eager to talk about her Armenian roots.

On her mother's side - her great-grandparents were from Old Armenia.

Her grandfather, Girair Kaprelian, was born in Kharpert, and her
grandmother, Hasmik Kaprelian, was born in Mousel. They owned a
successful textile manufacturing business in the Middle East. On her
father's side - her grandfather George Mardirossian chose Victoria
Ewin as his life partner and resided in Manchester where they
owned an Armenian hotel/restaurant. Tamar's interest in music began
when she discovered the works of Billy Joel and Paul McCartney at a
a young age, although she has been influenced by classic Disney films
earlier.

Tamar started writing songs when she was 14, however she did not play
any musical instruments. She began playing the piano without formal
training, and learning by simply picking up the instrument solely by
ear. That gave Tamar the opportunity to put down the melodies she
was writing and singing into a little recorder. Through a story of
inspiring discovery, Tamar Kaprelian competed in an online contest
run by the band, One Republic, in March, 2008. Through YouTube,
the contest aimed to choose the best cover of the band's hit song
"Apologize." As a reward, Ryan Tedder brought Tamar to the attention
of Interscope Records, which signed her shortly afterward. Wax Ltd
produced her song "New Day," and it went on to become her debut
album's first single. "New Day" was featured in various television
programming, including the fifth season finale of the hit MTV
series "The Hills" and the promo for ABC Family's "Huge." Tamar
Kaprelian released her first studio album, "Sinner or a Saint,"
on Interscope Records in August, 2010. It represents a classic pop
album of thought-provoking, hopeful, playful, and honest songs. It's
a coming-of-age record that chronicles Tamar's life, relationships,
and her utter determination to create an album that is real and
true to herself, both personally and artistically. Her next project,
an EP titled "California," was released on June 19, 2012. Co-written
by producers Xandy Barry and Wally Gagel, "California" was one of the
first released from Universal's Killer Tracks Artist Series. The Killer
Tracks Artist Series is an innovative and non-traditional platform
created to help artists reach new audiences and explore new revenue
opportunities. Tamar's "California" EP also scored her additional TV
placements on 90210 and The Hills. Returning back to the studio with
producer Ryan Perez-Daple, Tamar is wrapping up her follow-up EP with
Killer Tracks, available in May 2015. The untitled 5 song EP will
include 3 original songs from Tamar, as well as covers of "Summer,"
"Highland Falls" and "Don't Ask Me Why" by Bill Joel.
