ARMENIANS CELEBRATE TIARN'DARAJ TODAY
[07:50 pm] 13 February, 2009
On February 14, the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of the Lord's
Presentation to the Temple. Tiarn'daraj, or Candlemas as it is known
in the West, symbolizes the presentation of the 40 day-old Christ
Child to the Temple in Jerusalem.
In accordance with the Law of Moses, the infant Christ was brought to
the Temple by Mary and Joseph and presented to God.
In the tradition of the Church, Evening Services (Nakhatonak) are
conducted on the night preceding the Feast Day. At the conclusion of
the service, the priest lights a candle from the Holy Altar, and
distributes the flame to all present. With great care, the faithful
take the lit candles home to their families.
The morning of the Feast Day, Divine Liturgy is celebrated in Armenian
Churches throughout the world. Many additional customs have been
inherited from the past, including the blessing of the four corners of
the world in the Andastan Service, the blessing of newlywed couples,
as well as offering prayers for the crops and fertility of the fields.

THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO RETURN TO ARMENIA
[02:10 pm] 13 February, 2009
Many Armenians living in the Russian Federation cannot return to their
Homeland because of the world financial crisis. This mainly refers to
Armenians having some property in Russia ` abode, cars, shops, etc.
Armenian small and medium-size businessmen living in the Russian town
Velikii Novgorod are in a no-go situation. `Since we had few orders I
had to close my furniture workshop operating for 15 years. I am at a
loss. I am going to sell everything and return to Armenia but, as you
know, today no one buys anything. I cannot even sell my car,' said a
Novgorod citizen Karen Baghdasaryan.
The owner of a Novgorod-based restaurant Arthur Mesropyan is also
`driven into a corner.'
' `Our customers are getting fewer and fewer. Mostly, they drop in on
Saturdays and Sundays to drink a glass of beer or a cup of
coffee. There is no point in running the restaurant any longer. I
would like to sell the restaurant, my flat, cars and property and
start a business in Yerevan but¦,' sighs Mr. Mesropyan. `If the
crisis gets any deeper my desire will turn into a cherished dream,' he
adds.
Car mechanic Hovhannes Darbinyan living in the town for more than 18
years has already put his flat and car for sale.
I am looking forward to returning to my native town Hoktemberyan but I
cannot sell my flat and car. God grant that they are sold tomorrow.
Our interlocutors say that Armenians having temporary residence in
Velikii Novgorod have already returned to Armenia.

ARMENIAN INTEREST RATE CUT FURTHER TO BOOST SLOWING GROWTH

Global Insight
February 11, 2009
The Board of the Central Bank of Armenia (CBA) yesterday announced
a 25 basis point cut in its policy interest rate, taking the annual
refinancing rate to 6.75%. This decision follows a similar move taken
only in a month before, and a 50-basis-point cut in December. Last
year also saw eight successive monthly decreases of 25 basis points,
the latest of which was implemented in September. The CBA board saw
both domestic and external factors as supportive for a further rate
cut. Falling domestic demand is at present assisting in curbing
Armenian inflation, while cost-side pressure on inflation is also
moderating, in tandem with global price developments. The interest-rate
cut was based on the need to secure financial stability in the current
challenging conditions where economic growth is cooling.
Significance:The further monetary loosening move fits IHS Global
Insight's expectations. It comes after January inflation data
showed continued moderation in the annual rate of consumer price
growth. Indeed, the first month of the year saw inflation ease to
4.0% year-on-year, just corresponding to the 2009 inflation target
(seeArmenia: 2 February 2000:). With the global financial and economic
crisis reducing the availability of foreign investment and remittance
inflows, easing domestic demand is set to be further reflected
in clearly slowing GDP growth. With the global crisis only having
intensified, inflation pressures in Armenia are also likely to remain
moderate in the near tern, leaving leeway for further interest-rate
cuts by the CBA. However, the Armenian interest rate does not yet
function as a very effective policy tool, but mainly reflects the
CBA's inflation expectations.
