DIASPORA ARMENIANS SEND CLEAR MESSAGE TO ARMENIAN PRESIDENT

http://www.asbarez.com/wp-content/gallery/paris-demo-oct-2/20091002-paris-ss-10.jpg

Gibrahayer e-magazine and other combined sources 7 October, 2009 - Armenians across the world from Lebanon to California, from Paris to New York, turned the Diasporan Presidential visit, to a chain of demonstrations, voicing their opposition to the announced Protocols between Turkey and Armenia. In Armenia the ARF Dashnaktsoutiun started a hunger strike opposite the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
We enclose a chronology of events and the reaction to the Presidential Disaporan tour as it was reported from Asbarez, over the past week. A more detailed update with more than half a dozen posts every day, appear in the Gibrahayer Facebook Page, which has reached 2,700 subscribers.
Meanwhile, 12 political parties in Armenia have issued a joint statement in which they denounce the current Armenia-Turkey protocols and pledge efforts to thwart their signing expected later this month.
The statement was signed and published on Tuesday afternoon at the Office of the Executive Council of the ARF Dashnaktsoutiun, being its main initiator.
The statement issued on behalf of eleven parties, including Raffi Hovannisian’s Heritage, Aram Karapetyan’s New Times, Aram Sargsyan’s Democratic Party, Tigran Karapetyan’s People’s Party, the Ramkavar-Azatakan Party of Armenia and others, says that “the readiness of Armenia to settle relations with Turkey without any preconditions is already a serious concession to the country that perpetrated the Genocide of Armenians and has blockaded Armenia’s border and, therefore, should be the only concession of Yerevan on the way towards establishing diplomatic relations with Ankara.”
FRIDAY OCTOBER 2 2009, PARIS, FRANCE
Peaceful Armenian demonstrators in Paris were met with violence as riot police attacked demonstrators, dozens of whom shouted “No!”. Police dragged several protesters away kicking and screaming.
The protesters greeted President Serzh Sarkisian at the start of his tour of Armenian communities worldwide, shouting “traitor!” and decrying his plans to concede the historical and legal rights of the Armenian people in exchange for relations with Turkey.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 3 2009, NEW YORK, USA -
Armenian Americans in the eastern United states formed a picket line across the street from the New York Palace Hotel, where Armenia President Serge Sarkisian was scheduled to meet with representatives of Armenian American organizations to discuss the controversial Armenia-Turkey protocols.
Blockades and guardrails contained picketers who held signs proclaiming, “Don’t compromise Armenia’s future!” “Armenians Want Justice!” “Turkey Accept the Genocide!” and “No to the Protocols!”
Picketers held small Armenian flags and chanted, “Sarkisian, tavajan [traitor],” “Sarkisian, can’t you see? You can’t sell our legacy!” and “No more protocols, No more lies!” A large banner directed to Sarkisian declared, “Do Not Betray the Armenian Nation!”
The area inside and outside the hotel was heavily guarded by New York City police officers and plain-clothed agents, as well as Sarkisian’s own security guards.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 4 2009 LOS ANGELES, USA
More than 12,000 Armenian Americans from throughout California converged on the Beverly Hilton Hotel to protest the Turkey-Armenia protocols as Armenia President Serzh Sarkisian met with representatives of Armenian American organizations to defend his decision to sign the flawed documents. The protest was organised by the Stop The Protocols Campaign.
Prior to the beginning of the community meeting, Pres. Sarkisian’s delegation stood out on their 12th floor balcony and watched demonstrators, who called out in hopes that the President would address them directly.
Pres. Sarkisian chose not to address the people. During the fourth hour of the protest, several hundred frustrated demonstrators broke through the barricades and stormed across the street to the hotel entrance, yelling “votch, votch,” stopping traffic on Wilshire Blvd.
Meanwhile ARF Western Region Central Committee member Hovan Tashdjian, who had just left the meeting with the President, described a tense Pres. Sarkisian faced with overwhelming opposition by representatives of Diasporan organizations, attempting to defend the formation of a so-called “historical commission” and arguing that the Protocols would not affect the Karabakh peace process.

TUESDAY OCTOBER 5 2009, BEIRUT, LEBANON

In response to President Serzh Sarkisian’s trip to Beirut, the Lebanese-Armenian community Tuesday announced a strike and began marching, in the thousands, to Metropolitan Hotel, where the president was meeting community organizations.
On Monday night, hundreds of members of youth and student organisations of Lebanon greeted the president with their protests at the Beirut international airport.

TURKISH PRESIDENT URGES ARMENIAN DIASPORA NOT TO BLOCK PROTOCOLS

Turkish President urging Armenian Diaspora - PanARMENIAN.Net - 03/10/09 - Turkish President Abdullah Gul urged on Saturday the Armenian Diaspora not to block settlement of problems between Turkey and its neighbour Armenia.
"They should support all efforts for peace in the Caucasus, if they care about the future of Armenia," Gul told reporters in Azerbaijan's Nakhijevan Autonomous Republic where he attended the summit meeting of leaders of Turkic-speaking countries, World Bulletin reports.
Gul said the Armenian Diaspora was pursuing such a policy in order to preserve their identity in some countries.
"But this is not right," Gul said. "It is easy to speak from a distance."
Asked if tension between Turkey and Azerbaijan --after the protocol that Turkey and Armenia agreed on to normalise relations-- was overcome, Gul said, "fraternity between Turkey and Azerbaijan has always been tested. In this respect, Turkey and Azerbaijan have full confidence in each other."
Gul's remarks came after protests on Friday at the start of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan's tour of Armenian Diaspora in the world.

The Orient Global Freedom to Create team freedomtocreateprize.com, which supports artists who use their creativity to promote social justice, have selected to showcase "Time Capsule" at their award ceremony on the evening of November 25, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The exhibition will be attended by over 400 celebrities and global opinion leaders. The exhibition will later be repeated in New York.
The "Time Capsule" by our own Armenian Cypriot artist Tatiana Ferahian was created in an effort to bring awareness to the Armenian Genocide. It is made with a ready glass and ‘real human bone bits’ that the artist's mother brought back from Der Zor.

News in Brief by Sevag Devletian
  • Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed the 3rd regular congress of his ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party in Ankara on Saturday. In regard to Cyprus issue, Erdogan said that a solution to the issue must be found on the basis of two peoples, two democracies and two states in the island. "We are continuing to work for a solution", he stated. "Turkey has always worked to establish good relations with its neighboring countries in the last 7 years. We boosted economic cooperation with our neighbours. We have taken important steps to solve matters with Armenia and we will continue to do so," he said.
  • Baku has proposed that Azerbaijan and Armenia jointly use a corridor linking Armenia to Nagorno Karabakh, the Azerbaijani deputy foreign minister said. "Armenians often say they need communication between the Armenian community in Karabakh and Armenia. But the road across Lachin is important for Azerbaijan as well," Araz Azimov said. The Lachin corridor is the shortest route connecting Armenia with Nagorno Karabakh.
  • Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the protocol to normalise relations with Armenia would be signed before the soccer game between the Turkish and Armenian national teams. Davutoglu held a news conference to discuss the U.N. General Assembly meetings in New York and the foreign policy agenda in October. Asked whether the border crossing would be opened for a day for the game, Davutoglu said, "We need to assess the process to make a decision to open the border crossing." Turkey will play against Armenia on Oct. 14 in the World Cup European Group Five qualifying round to keep hopes alive of playing in the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.
  • A worldwide online petition opposing the "Protocols on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Armenia and Turkey" has been launched at www.votch.org. The petition calls for the outright rejection of the protocols.

The team also says it has found evidence of what may be history's oldest wine-making operation. The discoveries were made recently in a cave in southeastern Armenia. An analysis performed by the Keck Carbon Cycle Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Laboratory at the University of California, Irvine confirmed that one of three human skulls found at the site contains particles of a human brain dating to around the first quarter of the 4th millennium BC.

Letters to the Editor

Please, put me on your list to receive Gibrahayer.
I am a fan, married to an Armenian. My name is Claire Manassian-Oechslin. I was in one of your newsletter when I gave a presentation of my book at the French cultural Center in Nicosia. We live between Montreal and Nicosia. My husband gets it, but I have a different address and sometimes he forgets to forward it to me.
It is a great newsletter that links Armenians everywhere in the world. I love it !
Claire

Simon,
The photo that arrived on the top of today’s magazine is disgusting. How can anyone desecrate our flag with the word turkey on it?
Shame.
Perouz Seferian

unger Perouz,
The picture (fans holding the Armenian tricolour with Armenia-Turkey embroidered on it) is from the football ground where chapter one of "football diplomacy" was conducted.
Much as we may not agree with the Protocols, I think the picture is representative of what governments in Armenia and Turkey are trying to engineer.
warmest regards,
Simon Aynedjian - Gibrahayer e-magazine

Why do Diaspora Armenians have to struggle all alone for our pan-national issues?
The Armenian Genocide has been recognised by many countries thanks to Diaspora Armenians!
What has the Armenian Government done the last 18 years, including the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan to attain the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide and raise our territorial claims to foreign governments?
Am just asking...
Kindest regards
Karekin Dikran

on Gibrahayer Facebook this week Hrant Vartzbedian argues for the government in support of Serge Sargsyan's Protocol signings

HEY PEOPLE, don’t let fear of the unknown blind you and remember that YOU can have an opinion too, you don’t need to follow others just because they said so.

---) LEGAL OPINION: These protocols, signed or not, ratified into treaty or not, DO NOT in any way restrict the Diaspora's endeavour toward Genocide recognition, that is a carefully planned and orchestrated “misconception” intended by the few to give them some sort of legality and right to call the President of Armenia a traitor, and they will call you a traitor too if you dare to ask them why, it’s so much easier than to actually think by themselves.

---) STATISTICS: 90% or more of the victims of the Genocide are related to the nowadays Diasporan Armenians.... Read more

---) FACT: The Genocide was committed against Ottoman Armenians mainly within the borders of the Ottoman Empire, the Government of Armenia CANNOT give up the right to ask for restitution or recognition since originally IT doesn't have the right to even CLAIM it since it occurred in a neighboring country and to subjects of THAT country.

---) OPTION: So if you really want to hurt Turkey, go there with your old documents and raise a case against the government there asking for your family land back, just an idea, not impossible.

A very special Bravo to agitators who refuse, refuse to hear the other side, the other side chosen by the people to represent them, not the Diaspora dudes and chiefs, but by the people who actually live in Armenia AND have the right to vote, whatever the case common decency is required, but the agitators well known in each community have succeeded ... Read more to flock the sheep as they wish, the few wise ones ready to debate and win are just pushed aside as the few stupid ones get their way and get PAID in the process, ask the guys sitting under umbrellas at the Republic square, they get 200 dram an hour to sit in the sun for 8 hours (small mineral water bottle costs 120 dram). Enjoy the flocking everyone as you go and chant and wave, god forbid you might try to think and actually read the protocols text yourself and spend a couple of hours thinking on your own and making up your mind rather than listen to the shopkeeper at the agoump with no education or experience make his statement and decide for you too.

your original comments were in response to my " 3 musketeers, puppeteers"
did you understand what i meant, i meant those 3 parties are all dead.
They go with the flow.
In Armenia itself you will not find any work done by them, just trying to split up more.
