Gibrahayer e-magazine – Nicosia – 16 March 2011 - Azerbaijan today threatened to exercise its “territorial integrity” by shooting down civilian flights of Artsakh Air that have been scheduled for their maiden voyages for May 9, coinciding with the 17th anniversary of Shoushi. While the Azeri Civilian Aviation top man Arif Mammadov was declaring Karabakh aerial space closed for activity and threatening with the “physical destruction of airplanes landing in that territory”, Artsakh Republic President Bako Sahagyan responded by saying that if Azeris resorted to acts of escalation, they would be met with the “relative response”. Bako Sahagyan said that the 2009 decision of the Karabakh government to reopen the airport was in force, that the government had allocated three million dollars for its realisation and that the airport would be opened as planned, initially using three CRJ200 passenger jets to connect Stepanakert and Yerevan with a 35-minute flight. The construction of the two-storey building is almost complete and the airport has facilities to cater for 100 passengers per hour.

The funeral of the Chairman of The Armenian National Committee of Cyprus unger Puzant Nadjarian - who passed away on Thursday morning - took place in Nicosia on Saturday 12 March at Sourp Asdvadzadzin Church in Nicosia, with hundreds of his friends and family attending. He was buried at the Armenian Cemetery in Ayios Dhometios. Unger Puzant Nadjarian was a member of the ARF Dashnaktsoutiun and served for several years in the Cyprus Gomideh. He was a member of the Artsakank Armenian-language Editorial Board. In his words of farewell, Archbishop Varoujan Hergelian, singled out the unique ethos of unger Puzant as a man of few words and great deeds. "It is rare to find committed compatriots who will humbly give their service to the community and to their nation, and expect absolutely nothing in return", he said. In his final words to the deceased, his life-long comrade and friend Arto Tavitian, paid tribute to Puzant Nadjarian as an unger who thought nothing was impossible. "He carried this slogan in all the walks of his life" he said, "but most of all throughout his life as a committed member of ARF Dashnaktsoutiun, in all his deeds that we witnessed and in the ones we did not." Unger Puzant Nadjarian's coffin was lowered to its final resting ground with his comrades singing "verkerov lee", vowing to continue our nation's struggle for justice and freedom. LEGISLATION UPGRADING THE STATUS OF THE REPRESENTATIVES OF RELIGIOUS MINORITIES

Gibrahayer e-magazine 14 March 2011 - Nicosia - After three years of persistent efforts by the Representatives of the religious minorities of Cyprus (Armenians, Maronites and Latins), spear-headed by the Armenian MP Vartkes Mahdessian, legislation upgrading the status of the communities through the increased powers of the minority MPs, is virtually a reality. Procedures to conduct community affairs are set to receive a new momentum, by legislation that will be voted shortly, affecting the decision-making processes that involve the community and its relationship with government and Parliamentary bodies. With this legislation, community Representatives will have to provide a written opinion on matters related to their respective communities. These opinions will be seriously taken into consideration and discussed in each related committee. If the final decisions of committees are contrary to that of the community MPs, a valid, transparent and substantiated position will have to go on record and made public by the committees. In recent decades a lot has been talked about the enhancement of the role of the minority MPs. Our MP Vartkes Mahdessian said that support for the proposed law has already been secured from all parties in Parliament and he believed that these amendments will be passed unanimously. “A major and historic change is a reality” Mahdessian said and concluded. “We can all be proud that a more effective and transparent decision-making process as well as a significant enhancement of the status of our community has been achieved and it is being sealed by the new legislation.”

ISRAEL AND CYPRUS SEAL DEAL

www.financialmirror.com - Nicosia – 16 March 2011 - Cypriot and Israeli leaders have discussed cooperating to transport their newly discovered natural gas from an offshore Israeli field to Cyprus before shipping to the rest of Europe. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Cyprus President Demetris Christofias on Monday and discussed "forming a work team to examine the possibility of transporting gas from Leviathan to Cyprus and from there to the markets in Europe", Netanyahu's office said in a statement. Christofias later made a similar pledge of cooperation when, in his formal address at a dinner hosted by President Shimon Peres, he said that “we agreed that we have to work intensively for cooperation in this area of common interest, the energy area. So, very soon, I hope that we shall have the expected results for both countries.” A similar interest was raised at the Cyprus-Israel business forum on Tuesday. The Israeli gas would come from the Leviathan field, some 130 kms off the Israeli coast, which has estimated reserves of 16 trln cubic feet. Delek Group, an Israeli partner in a consortium with U.S.-based Noble Energy that will produce the gas, has proposed creating a facility in Cyprus to process it into liquefied natural gas. The consortium in December said Leviathan was the world's biggest deepwater find of the past decade and that it expected to begin production there in about 2017. Noble Energy has also said it is confident of similar discoveries in Plot 12 of the Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone.

TURKISH OCCUPATION REGIME DETAINS WALESA'S SON

Gibrahayer e-magazine – Nicosia – 16 March 2011 - The Turkish occupation regime released on Monday two Greek Cypriots held since Saturday for trespassing on a restricted military area. Former member of the European Parliament Yiannakis Matsis and Loizos Afxentiou - of the Famagusta Refugees Movement - appeared before a military court, charged with illegal entry into a restricted zone, fined and later released. Also detained on Saturday were Polish MEPs Artur Zasada and Jaroslaw Leszek Walesa - son of former Polish President Lech Walesa - who were released a few hours later. The four men had crossed into a fenced-off area and entered the courtyard of a Christian church when they were arrested by police officers of the pseudo-state. This act was strongly condemned by all political parties and the Cyprus government, who together with the arrested MPs, announced that they would take the matter up to international bodies.

HRAYR JEBEJIAN'S NEW BOOK

The book is titled "The Armenian’s Path of Struggle for Existence" (Beirut, 2010, Hamazkayin Vahe Setian Press, 464 pages) and is compiled under five main headings: National thinking, Diaspora perspective, Christian identity, Lebanese belongingness and denominational understanding. The topics cover dozens of Armenian communities stretching from Lebanon to China, from Gulf Countries to South Africa. Jebejian writes about the aspirations and challenges of these communities and their struggle for preserving the national identity and faith in a global environment. Although wider in perspective, the majority of articles deal with the Armenian community in Lebanon, where Jebejian lived until 2005, before moving to Cyprus. DIASPORA MINISTRY CALLING YOUNG ARMENIAN JOURNALISTS

The Armenian Ministry of Diaspora and Yerevan State University will be setting up a School for Young Diaspora Armenian Journalists with training courses from June 26 to July 16, 2011. The training courses will conclude with a forum. The courses are open to journalists working for Armenian mass media outlets, as well as up to 33-year old gifted youth who are recommended by their communities and are preparing to work for an Armenian mass media outlet in the given community. The number of participants is limited to 20 and the courses will be conducted in Armenian. The Armenian Ministry of Diaspora will cover expenses for the young journalists’ stay in Armenia and the participants (newspaper, community) will cover their travel expenses. OPINION POLL: WHO DO TURKS CONSIDER THEIR ENEMIES?

42% of the respondents named the United States as Turkey's enemy number one while 23% of them named Israel

The people of Turkey regard the United States and Israel as their main enemies, the results of an opinion poll suggest. A total of 2,000 Turkish people took part in the opinion poll conducted by Ankara-based MetroPOLL Strategic and Social Research Center. The results were published on February 28, 2011, the IRIB's Research Center reported. 42% of the respondents saw the United States as Turkey's number one enemy, and 23% of them singled out Israel as the main enemy. Six percent of those polled said Greece was their country's main enemy. Four percent singled out Iraq's Kurdistan, and a tiny three percent picked Armenia. Eight percent of the respondents chose other countries as Turkey's number one enemy, while 14% had no opinion about their country's worst enemy. Turkey's differences with Greece are mainly over the ownership of a few islands in the Mediterranean Sea as well as the issue of Cyprus. Both countries are members of NATO alliance. The Turkish people also regard Iraq's Kurdistan as a threat because it can set a precedent for Turkish Kurds, the Research Center said. Armenia also has age-old difference with Turkey because of the Armenian Genocide.

Amid an international outcry over Turkish government attacks on the press and imprisonment of journalists, a Turkish court on Thursday convicted activist and publisher Ragip Zarakolu for publishing a book on the Kurds. The court also convicted the author of the book, Mehmet Guler. Horst Seehofer, the leader of the governing Christian Social Union party in Bavaria and a key ally in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s center-right government, on Wednesday issued a strong attack against Turkey’s human rights record and warned Ankara not to interfere in the integration debate. More than 3,000 French-Armenian community members were joined by French Parliament members, human rights activists and singer turned Armenian Ambassador to Switzerland, Charles Aznavour, at a demonstration Saturday demanding that the French Senate adopt a bill that decriminalizes the denial of the Armenian Genocide. As part of their anti-Armenian Genocide campaign, the Turkish authorities have spent over 3 million US dollars, the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet says, citing the US Department of Justice reports. Through its diplomatic channels in Washington, Ankara has reportedly transferred a sum of $3.3 million to the United States lobbyist organizations. "Most of the sums were spent to halt the Congress efforts to adopt the Resolution on the Armenian Genocide," the Turkish publication says. "The lion's share was paid to the Gephard Group lobbyist organization. ARF Dashnaktsoutiun Bureau member Vahan Hovhannisyan declined an invitation to take part in the Wilton Park conference on Turkey`s policies for engagement in the contemporary world to be held in Istanbul, March 24 to 27.

We are in very heavy financial position. We all are invalids of first group. I and my brother are in wheelchairs, my mother are in bed. We receive a pension of 148 dollars per month for all of us. We addressed by tv for invalid tender for us, but anyone who comes requires not less than 200 dollars per month, money we do not have as thepension we receive is not enough even for food. We need also 100 dollars per month for food for us. Here in Armenia we asked many people to help us by money for invalid tender, but no one wants to help us. Alexander-Michael Hadjilyra for Gibrahayer e-magazine - As part of my ongoing research on the history of the Armenian-Cypriot community, I have started researching on the Armenian-Cypriot press, for an article that will appear in “Artsakank”, which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary. The first Armenian newspaper in Cyprus was “Kharazan”, which appeared in Nicosia in 1900 and was mainly educational and pedagogical. This monthly and handwritten newspaper was published by Garabed Takvorian and stopped after a few issues. Since then, and despite its small size, the Armenian-Cypriot community has a relatively large number of newspapers and periodicals to show. For the purpose of this small article, I shall concentrate on the Armenian-Cypriot press that circulated from 1960 onwards:

a) “Ayk” students’ magazine was published at irregular intervals by the Melkonian between 1937-2006. b) “Henaran” weekly newspaper was published in Nicosia between 1959-1962 by Setrak Guebenlian. c) “Tsolk” was published by MEI between 1968-1991, initially on a weekly and later on as a monthly and bimonthly students’ newspaper. Its Editors-in-Chief were Manuel Keosseyian and Minas Kojayan. d) “Deghegadou” periodical was published by AGBU Larnaca between 1973-1995, by initiative of Garabed Papazian. e) “Gibrahay Deghegadou” monthly church bulletin was first published by the Armenian Prelature of Cyprus in 1978, by initiative of Bishop Zareh Aznavorian; his work was continued by Senior Archimandrite Yeghishe Mandjikian until 1993. f) “Haytoug” bimonthly socio-political bulletin was published in Nicosia between 1979-1982 by a group of ASALA supporters. g) “Artsakank” started as a quarterly newspaper (1981-1982) and then an annual periodical published by the Armenian Youth Federation of Cyprus. Between 1985-1987 it was published by the “Azadamard” Armenian Youth Centre. In 1995 it re-surfaced, as a monthly newspaper and it is published until today in Nicosia, with Arto Tavitian as its Editor-in-Chief. h) “Paros” monthly newspaper was published in Nicosia between 1997-2003 by Masis der Partogh, with Yeran Kouyoumdjian as its Editor-in-Chief. i) “Keghart” monthly church bulletin has been published by the Armenian Prelature of Cyprus since 1997, by initiative of Archbishop Varoujan Hergelian. k) “Hayatsk” quarterly multilingual students’ newspaper was published between 1998-2000 by the Melkonian, by initiative of Yeghia Kayayan; between 2000-2004 it was published as a multilingual periodical which came out every four months. l) “Azad Tsayn” monthly newspaper has been published in Nicosia since 2003 by Kevork Zeitountsian, with Yeran Kouyoumdjian as its Editor-in-Chief. m) “Lradou” quarterly parliamentary newsletter has been published in Nicosia since 2006 by the Office of the Armenian Representative Vartkes Mahdessian, with Nayiri Mouradian as its editor.

Through their pages, we learn about a variety of things. We also get a glimpse of the people’s mentality of the time in which they were written. For those with a good command of Armenian, the evolution of the language will be of interest. But above all, in my opinion, these publications are a historical testament: when the common knowledge of today meets the distant future and when yesterday’s memories fade and precision is unattainable for those “mundane facts”, these are the publications that will supply us with the information required to compile and immortalise the history of this great community which, despite the adversities it has endured, has managed to preserve intact its language, religion and culture. This article is dedicated to the loving memory of unger Puzant Nadjarian, who for the period January 2009-March 2011 served as Artsakank's etchatrogh (pagemaker), devoting much of his time and effort.

WORLD'S EARLIEST KNOWN WINE-MAKING FACILITY DISCOVERED IN ARMENIA

The world's earliest known wine-making facility has been discovered in Armenia, archaeologists say. A wine press and fermentation jars from about 6,000 years ago were found in Armenia. Co-director of the excavation Gregory Areshian, of the University of California, Los Angeles, said it was the earliest example of complete wine production. The findings were announced by the National Geographic Society. They have been published in the online edition of the Journal of Archaeological Science.

Associated Press - The facility was uncovered in the mountains of south-east Armenia. The same area was the site of the discovery of the oldest known leather shoe, dated to about 5,500 years ago. Inside the cave, the international team of archaeologists found a shallow basin, measuring about 1m (3ft) across, that was positioned to drain into a deep vat. The basin could have served as a wine press where people stomped the grapes with their feet, Mr Areshian said. The team also found grape seeds, the remains of pressed grapes and dozens of dried vines. 'Domesticated' vines The seeds were from the same type of grapes - Vitis vinifera vinifera - still used to make wine today. The wine-making facility was surrounded by graves and the team says the wine may have been intended for ceremonial use. Mr. Areshian said that already-known evidence of wine drinking pre-dates the Armenian facility. "The evidence argues convincingly for a wine-making facility," said Patrick McGovern, scientific director of the Bio-molecular Archaeology Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania Museum in Philadelphia, who was not part of the research team, Associated Press news agency reported. He said such large scale wine production implied that the Eurasian grape had already been domesticated 6,000 years ago. The earliest comparable remains to those uncovered in Armenia were found in the tomb of the ancient Egyptian King Scorpion I, dating to around 5,100 years ago.

GYMNASTICS: Yerevan State Linguistic University gymnastics instructor David Fahradyan received Guinness World Records certificate in recognition of his second record, thus becoming the first Armenian sportsman to have broken a record twice. On November 13, Fahradyan performed 76 high bar giants on left hand to set Guinness world record at Olympic Champion Hrant Shaninyan Sport School. Fahradyan broke the first record having performed 350 high bar giants within 10minutes.
