What threat does Turkey's Ccaos pose of Armenia?
Naira Hayrumyan, Political Commentator
10 September 2015,
Armenia Must Be Big and Powerful to Survive: 95th Anniversary of
Treaty of Sevres
As the parliamentary elections in Turkey are drawing nearer, the wish
of this country's leadership to cause a panic in the country to cover
up domestic and foreign political failures becomes obvious.
Armenia is closely following the developments in Turkey where the
level of democracy is retreating from the previous level. However, the
ongoing developments are evidence that democracy in Turkey was not
irreversible.
Attacks on the offices of the pro-Kurdish parties which have a lot of
Armenian members have begun. In an interview with the Agos Newspaper
Member of Parliament Garo Paylan, People's Democratic Party, announced
that the attacks on party offices are provocations leading to a coup.
"During innumerable incidents policemen and agents of special services
attack our offices under the name of nationalists," Garo Paylan said.
Though the border is closed, there is communication between Armenia
and Turkey. The territories lying beyond Ararat are still called West
Armenia. Besides, the Armenian economy is related to Turkey. There are
a lot of Turkish products in our shops, and apparently changes in the
lira rate affect the prices in Armenia as much as the rate of the
ruble.
There are some other circumstances that make Armenia follow the
dramatic developments in Turkey closely. The Kurdish movement in
Turkey unfolds at a high rate, and the prospect of establishment of a
Kurdish state are becoming more realistic.
This is highly important to Armenia. This still hypothetical formation
will include the historically Armenian territories. Besides, the most
painful processes in Turkey are going on at the border with Armenia
and may pose a serious threat. Moreover, nobody knows what territories
the Kurds want. For example, is Nakhijevan among these territories?
The Turkish-Kurdish clashes at the border with Nakhijevan are the most
intensive ones. In this conflict Azerbaijan which includes Nakhijevan
supports the Turkish government. However, hardly anyone will be able
to predict how the population of Nakhijevan will behave if the events
take another turn.
All these scenarios may seem fantastic but the developments are very

ARMENIAN PATRIARCHATE OF CONSTANTINOPLE URGES
TO REFRAIN FROM STATEMENTS TARGETED AT ARMENIAN
COMMUNITY
10 September, 2015
YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 10, ARMENPRESS. Armenian Patriarchate of
Constantinople has released a statement condemning the ongoing
terrorist acts in Turkey urging to withhold from making statements
and announcements targeted at the Armenian community in Turkey.
"Armenpress" reports, referring to Anadolu news agency, that the
Patriarchate informs in the statement that they pray for the cease
of terrorist acts threatening the unity and integrity of Turkey and
establishment of long-term peace.
The Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople expressed its concerns
that very often different articles can be found in Turkish media
targeted at the Armenian community in Turkey.
"From time to time expressions of some writers targeting our community
and identifying it with that terrorist group deeply insult the
Armenian citizens who have always been committed to this country
and possess civic consciousness. Using unjust expressions referring
to the Armenian citizens considering themselves a part of Turkey is
an attitude not fitting in the frames of goodness. We are convinced
that the majority of our nation does not agree to these alienating
expressions.", reads the statement.
Patriarchate strongly condemns any terrorist act in the country
expressing their condolences to the families who had losses during
these days.

Armenia Presses For Free Trade With Iran
Sargis Harutyunyan
10.09.2015
The Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) has accepted an Armenian
proposal to explore the possibility of seeking a free trade agreement
with Iran, a senior official in Yerevan revealed on Thursday.
Armenia and Iran have for years discussed ways of removing or at least
reducing tariff barriers in bilateral trade. Armenia is no longer
allowed to negotiate bilateral free-trade deals due to its membership
in the EEU, effective from January 2015. It can enter into such
arrangements only together with Russia and the three other ex-Soviet
members of the bloc.
"About three months ago, we formally appealed to the Eurasian Economic
Commission and all member states, proposing the start of a process of
creating a more liberal trade regime between the EEU and Iran," Deputy
Foreign Minister Shavarsh Kocharian told journalists. He linked the
proposal with Iran's landmark nuclear agreement with the United States
and other world powers envisaging a gradual lifting of international
sanctions against Tehran.
Kocharian said that the EEU's executive body and member states agreed
to set up a task force that will weigh up potential economic benefits
and risks of free trade with the Islamic Republic. "Iran has always
shown an interest in this matter," he stressed.
Yerevan's initiative is clearly motivated by a desire to facilitate
Armenian manufacturers' access to the vast Iranian market that has
long been protected by very high import duties.
According to official statistics, Armenia's trade with Iran stood at a
relatively modest $291 million last year. Armenian imports of Iranian
goods accounted for 70 percent of that figure.
