Turkey constructs special boats for a religious mass to take place in
an Armenian church on Akdamar Island in Van, local ship constructer
said

Turkey constructs special boats for a religious mass to take place in
an Armenian church on Akdamar Island in the eastern province of Van,
a local ship constructer said on Wednesday.

Boat owners in Van are not only working to increase the security and
comfort of passengers they will carry to the island for the religious
mass on September 19, but also constructing new boats in European Union
(EU) standards.

"I have almost constructed two boats, and I have been asked to
construct another," local ship constructer Suat Belek said.

Belek said there would be a lavatory, kitchen and a lounge on the
boats.

It takes more than two months to construct a boat, which costs around
65,000 Turkish liras-TL (42,000 USD).

Also, the head of Akdamar Island Motorized Vehicle Cooperative said
they would allocate almost 40 boats for the religious ceremony.

Moreover, Van's Governor Munir Karaloglu told reporters about
preparations for the religious mass, and said local executives would
inform the Armenian community, who had laid down some demands, about
which demands they would meet.

Karaloglu said the the patriarch of Armenian in Turkey would conduct
the religious mass.

The governor said local executives would do everything in their power
to host people who came for the religious mass in the best way.

The 1,100-year-old Akdamar Church was opened in 2007 at a ceremony
that hosted officials from Armenia and Turkey after it was restored
by the Turkish government. The restoration costed some 1.7 million USD.

The Akdamar Church was constructed by architect bishop Manuel between
915 and 921 A.D. under the supervision of King Gagik I. Among the
important pieces of Armenian architecture, the church draws attraction
with its stone workmanship and the relieves on its walls.

Earlier this March, Turkish government gave permission for a single-day
religious that would take place once every year at the church upon a
proposal by the Van Governor's Office and approval by Turkish Minister
of Culture and Tourism Ertugrul Gunay.

The rite at the Akdamar Church will take place each year in the second
week of September.
Annual Festival Puts Armenia On World Cinema Map
Armenia -- Canadian-Armenian director Atom Egoyan (L) and Italian
actress Claudia Cardinale open the annual Golden Apricot film festival
in Yerevan
14July 2010.

An annual international film festival kicked off in the Armenian
capital at the weekend, giving a rare opportunity for the country's
cinemagoers and critics to enjoy a variety of films brought to Yerevan
by some noted names in the world of cinema.

Golden Apricot, held in Armenia every year since 2004, opened last
Sunday with a grand ceremony attended by several star guests,
including renowned Italian actress Claudia Cardinale.

Observers say the Yerevan festival has lately been turning into quite
a distinguished boutique event due to attendance by some renowned
artists and a special atmosphere created by sideline events such as
jazz performances, cocktail parties and others.

Symbolic stars honoring several noted Armenian cinema artists, such as
renowned French-Armenian filmmaker Henri Verneuil, were inaugurated at
the Hall of Fame in front of downtown Yerevan's Moskva Cinema House,
one of several main venues for the festival's film shows.

Participants and guests of the festival were also received by
President Serzh Sarkisian, while the main opening ceremonies were
attended by Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian and Yerevan Mayor Gagik
Beglarian, which only underscored the significance of the festival in
Armenia's cultural life.

`I am happy to be in Armenia,' said Cardinale at a press conference on
Monday.

The 72-year-old actress was in the principal cast of Verneuil's 1991
film Mayrig (Mother), which tells about the struggle of an Armenian
immigrant family in France who had fled the horrors of Ottoman-era
massacres of Armenians at the beginning of last century. The show of
the film opened the Yerevan festival on July 11.

`I was lucky to play the part of the mother in Verneuil's film and get
acquainted with Armenian history,' added Cardinale, who received a
tribute award and a commemorative festival medal for her contribution
to world cinema.

About 120 films selected from some 500 applications coming from around
70 countries are to be shown during the Yerevan festival, which ends
on July 18 Festival organizers say they have spared no effort for this
year's events to prove a success.

Speaking to reporters on July 11, Festival President and renowned
Canadian-Armenian director Atom Egoyan said: `Golden Apricot is not
only a cultural but a political event, as it helps reflect upon
various international issues.' `The festival gains popularity year by
year. It's a unique brand of Armenia,' added Egoyan.

Armenia -- Armenian and Turkish filmmakers meet in Yerevan, 12July
2010.

The Toronto-based filmmaker enjoys worldwide recognition and is
critically acclaimed for his 2002 movie, Ararat, set around an
historical epic involving Armenians in Ottoman Turkey and presenting
their mass killings at the beginning of the 20th century as a
systematic genocide.

Among the remarkable parts of the festival this year is also the
so-called Armenia-Turkey platform, a meeting point of sorts for
Armenian and Turkish filmmakers. The platform is the fruit of a series
of Armenia-Turkey cinema workshops organized within the frameworks of
the Armenian-Turkish Cultural Initiative. The initiators of the
program are the Anadolu Kultur Association from Turkey and the Golden
Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival from Armenia.

Fatih Akin, a 37-year-old German-born filmmaker of Turkish origin,
said of the Turkey-Armenia relations that the conflict between the two
neighbors is primarily based on fear that he said `must be overcome.'
`This is the fear of truth. And cinema is that force that can help
overcome this fear, just like rock-and-roll once managed to clear lots
of barriers,' he underscored.

French-Armenian film director Serge Avedikian, who won a Short Film
Palme d'Or at the Festival in Cannes this year for his 15-minute
`Barking Island' animated documentary, also spoke of ways of
overcoming fear between Turks and Armenians.

Armenia -- Fatih Akin, German film director of Turkish origin at a
press conference in Yerevan, 13July, 2010
At a cocktail party for the press on Tuesday Avedikian said joint work
is possible with certain Turkish organizations that genuinely wish to
cooperate and overcome this fear.

`There is a great fear not only among artists, but also between the
peoples about how normal relations can be established,' he said. `I
think art and especially cinema could play a great role, because
politicians are doing their bit, and artists, if they are really free
and do not work under government pressure, are doing theirs, which I
think can be very useful.'

Avedikian's film closes the festival program this coming
Sunday. `Barking Island' tells about 30,000 street dogs in Istanbul,
Turkey, that were rounded up and slaughtered by the Young Turks
government in 1910, which is also an indirect reference to the
genocidal policies of Ottoman rulers against Armenians.

Drug addictions on the rise: Isn't 5000 too much?
12:37 • 15.07.10

There has recently been an increase in the number of drug addicts who
turn to Psychiatric Medical Centre LLC drug addiction clinic, the
Arthur Potosyan, a doctor from this centre told Tert.am.

In his words in 2001 only 7 drug addicts had been treated in the
centre, while in 2009 that number had already reached 1000.
Potosyan pointed to various factors as reasons for this increase.

"A [process] of Europeanization is taking place, the youth are
behaving more freely. Besides, there are more people now who turn to
the clinic for treatment. If they were previously afraid of and were
thinking that the drug clinic is part of the police, and a way of
punishements, then today that mindset has already disappeared,"
explained Potosyan.

According to Potosyan expertise data show that there are 5000
intravenous drug addicts in Armenia.

He also said that among drugs widely used in Armenia are those made of
marijuana and hemp.

ARMENIAN PSYCHOLOGIST: ABSENCE OF SUPPORT BY
THE STATE IS THE MAIN REASON OF DIVORCE IN ARMENIA
ArmInfo
2010-07-14 12:56:00

ArmInfo. Absence of support by the state is the main reason of
divorce in Armenia as the state does not deal with social and economic
problems of the society, psychologist Seyran Amiryan said at today's
press-conference.

He also added that the state does not provide its citizens with
minimal means for more or less normal life. This leads to raising of
financial problems in the families. It is already for 10 years that
the tendency of growth of the number of divorces has been noticed in
Armenia, but this tendency has reduced a little over the last 5 years,
which may be explained by tolerance in the Armenian families. He also
said that people divorce in Armenia mainly in 5 years after marriage.

The main reasons of divorce are disagreements in family and difference
of viewpoints and ideology.

He also added that true Armenian families are born and live in villages
and thanks to villages families in Armenia preserve their identity.
ARMENIA RAISES GREAT INTEREST AT "SHANGHAI 2010"
EXHIBITION
ARMENPRESS
JULY 14, 2010
YEREVAN

YEREVAN, JULY 14, ARMENPRESS: The "Shanghai 2010" exhibition, opened
in the Chinese town of Shanghai and held from May to October, Robert
Harutyunyan, director general of the Armenian Development Agency,
described as exclusive and unprecedented. This assessment is agreed
with the number of participants - more than 100 million people. At
a press conference in "Armenpress" press center, Robert Harutyunyan
said the number of participant-countries is 200, including Armenia.

Together with a number of European countries Armenia is represented
in one general pavilion. The participant countries were trying to
present their ideas about town of future under the slogan - "Better
city, better life". The solutions vary: many referred to ecological
issues, many to infrastructures.

"We have put the accent on a better city based on the reconciliation
and friendship, where people of different religion, sex and nation
may organize their everyday life," Robert Harutyunyan said.

He particularly pointed out the interest of foreigners toward Armenia's
pavilion, adding "the expectations exceeded twice." Instead of the
expected 10 000 visitors a day, 20 000 were visiting the Armenian
pavilion. The Armenian pavilion has also privilege to change and
import novelties during six months.

Each of the participant countries has an opportunity to mark one
national day within the framework of the exhibition. Armenia will
mark that day September 11.

The speaker said after the Shanghai exhibition there is an intention
to bring what was shown there to our country and present here as well.

Shanghai exhibition is also being used for developing economic
relations. It is viewed as a good opportunity of export of the
Armenian products. Initially there was a fear that it is senseless
to enter Chinese market as it is difficult to compete there taking
into consideration their low prices. R. Harutyunyan said success has
been registered. Armenian wine, brandy, juices, jams, teas and even
chocolate were sold there. "There was an opinion that Chinese do
not eat sweet and chocolate will not have demand. While the product
intended for a month was sold in 3-4 days," R. Harutyunyan said.

As about the Armenian-Chinese relations, the speaker pointed out the
university sphere. Many Armenians are leaving for studying there and
vice versa.
