Victory

BBC suspends partnership with NTV! Thank you to the nearly 10,000 people who signed the petition and helped keep the pressure on the BBC. Thank you to the journalists from the BBC Turkish service who, by preparing the report on Gezi Park and press freedom (which NTV then blocked), demonstrated to the BBC's management what independence and impartiality really mean. Thank you to the Gezi protestors for revealing and protesting the biased agenda of the mainstream media in Turkey. For two weeks BBC management did nothing while NTV censored the protest outbreak, doctored images of protest banners and failed to interview protestors on screen. They stood by NTV and only acted when it would have been impossible not to. To help make sure that the suspension is permanent and to ensure the BBC investigates why they ended up supporting NTV for so long we will be submitting the petition to the BBC Trust as a formal complaint. Thanks again, and please continue to support the Gezi protestors.
- BBC, NTV ile olan ortaklığını fes etmeli.
- We call on the BBC to cancel its partnership with NTV in Turkey.

WHY?
The BBC's relationship with NTV has become a joke:
1. NTV has now even censored the BBC's own news programme! It has refused to broadcast the BBC Turkce daily news on 14/6 because it included a report on Gezi Park and press freedom. This comes days after Peter Horrocks, Head of BBC Global News said: "the BBC sought and received assurances from NTV that BBC programming would continue to be broadcast in full and without interference."
2. NTV has shown blatant bias throughout the protests. The BBC's own coverage says NTV has "steered clear of covering the demonstrations" and is "loth to irritate the government because their owners' business interests at times rely on government support."
3. Even NTVhas admitted that its lack of coverage of the outbreak of large scale and unprecedented protests in the centre of Turkey’s largest city was in direct response to political pressure.
4. The BBC guidelines clearly state: "Any external relationship must not undermine the BBC’s core values of impartiality, editorial integrity, and independence."

  4. BBC says NTV partnership under ongoing review

The BBC has stated that its partnership with NTV is "under review" in response to our petition that has now been signed by over 3500 people!
This is still NOT good enough as the BBC has said that "at present" it has made the "difficult decision" that "it is better for our audiences that the BBC is broadcasting via NTV in Turkey than if it were not."
NTV bias continues - help put further pressure on the BBC and NTV by tweeting and sharing these messages:

We have asked the BBC for a further response.
