1) JACKIE KANCHELIAN SPEIER ELECTED TO U.S. CONGRESS

WASHINGTON, DC – Armenian American Jackie Kanchelian Speier swept to a resounding victory last night, receiving close to 80% of the vote in a special election in California’s 12th Congressional District, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA.) Speier will be joining Rep. Anna Eshoo (CA-14) as the only other Armenian American legislator in the 110th Congress.

“We are encouraged to see Jackie Speier, a tremendously talented public servant and proud daughter of the Armenian people, elected to represent the citizens of California’s 12th Congressional District,” said Aram Hamparian, Executive Director of the ANCA. “She comes to Washington with a proven track record of legislative achievement in California, and we look forward to working with her on issues of shared concern.”

Speier won the special election on April 8th, which was scheduled after Rep. Tom Lantos’ untimely passing earlier this year when he succumbed to esophageal cancer. In a field of five candidates, Representative-elect Speier won an impressive 77.9% of the vote, with the remaining candidates receiving less than 10% each. Read More. . .

2) ANCA OUTLINES 13 BUSH ADMINISTRATION FAILINGS ON ARMENIAN AMERICAN ISSUES

WASHINGTON, DC – The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), in a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, has outlined the Armenian American community’s concerns regarding the Bush Administration’s seven-year record of largely counterproductive, frequently unfriendly, and, at times, antagonistic policies toward Armenia and the Armenian American community.

The April 4th letter, signed by ANCA Chairman Ken Hachikian, listed thirteen areas in which the President and his Administration fell short of both their own commitments and our nation’s basic human rights standards, retreated from America’s historic commitment to Armenia, and strained – through a series of ill-advised policies and often hostile actions - the enduring ties that have long bound together the American and Armenian peoples. The following points are covered in significant detail in the 6-page letter, the full text of which is provided below:

1) The President’s broken campaign pledge to recognize the Armenian Genocide 2) Opposition to the Congressional Genocide Resolution 3) The Evans firing and the Hoagland nominations 4) The waiver of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act 5) Reduction in aid to Armenia 6) Abandonment of the military aid parity agreement 7) Mistaken listing of Armenia as a terrorist country 8) Lack of U.S.-Armenia Presidential visitations 9) Failure to confront the desecration of the Djulfa cemetery 10) Failure to maintain a balanced policy on Nagorno Karabagh 11) Taxpayer financing of the Baku-Ceyhan bypass of Armenia 12) Failure to effectively pressure Turkey and Azerbaijan to end their blockades 13) Neglect of relations with the Armenian American community. 3) MASSACHUSETTS MUNICIPAL ASSOCIATION ENDS SPONSORSHIP OF NO PLACE FOR HATE

-- Cites ADL’s Ongoing Denial of the Armenian Genocide

Watertown, MA – The Massachusetts Municipal Association voted unanimously this week to end its sponsorship of the No Place for Hate program due to the Anti Defamation League’s (ADL) continued ambiguity about the Armenian Genocide and its active opposition to its recognition, reported the Armenian National Committee of Massachusetts.

The action by the nonprofit, nonpartisan association of Massachusetts cities and towns, comes after at least 12 Massachusetts communities, including just recently the city of Peabody, have already withdrawn from the NPFH program, concluding that their constituents' human rights needs are best served by dissociating themselves from the ADL. As of Wednesday evening all references to the No Place for Hate program had been removed from the MMA’s official website.

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 8, the MMA affirmed that, “the inconsistency between the National ADL’s position on the Armenian Genocide and the human rights principles underlying NPFH is a matter of great concern to MMA Board members and the municipalities they represent. The MMA feels strongly that it is imperative to speak with absolute clarity on genocide and that, due to the NPFH program’s association with the National ADL, the Association will no longer be a sponsor of the program.”

“The MMA made the right decision today, sending a clear signal that the ADL simply cannot be entrusted with the task of promoting tolerance and diversity in communities while it engages in the ultimate form of hate speech: genocide denial,” stated Sharistan Melkonian of the Armenian National Committee of Massachusetts. 4) PRESIDENT BUSH TO NOMINATE NEW U.S. AMBASSADOR TO ARMENIA

WASHINGTON, DC – President George Bush today announced plans to nominate career diplomat, Marie L. Yovanovitch as U.S. Ambassador to Armenia, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

According to a personnel announcement posted on the White House website, the President’s candidate “currently serves as Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic. Prior to this, she served as Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Political Affairs at the Department of State. Earlier in her career, she served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Kyiv. Ms. Yovanovitch received her bachelor's degree from Princeton University and her master's degree from the National War College.” http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2008/03/20080328-6.html

The Associated Press (AP) today quoted ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian as saying: “It's important to have an ambassador in Yerevan, but it’s also important to have the right ambassador. Being able to speak truthfully about what we all acknowledge is the historical record, is an important part of a U.S. ambassador's ability to effectively represent our nation's values and interests in Yerevan."

WASHINGTON, DC – University of Michigan Armenian American students learned about career and internship opportunities in the nation’s capital, last week, during a special presentation by Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) Capital Gateway Director Serouj Aprahamian, organized by the University of Michigan Armenian Students Cultural Association (ASCA).

New York, NY - On March 27, Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) Capital Gateway Program director Serouj Aprahamian lectured to a group of young Armenian-Americans about ANCA internship opportunities in Washington, DC.
