A shoe so old it’s 5,500 years out of fashion

The world’s oldest shoe may have suffered the fate of cutting-edge design down the ages
— falling out of fashion.

A 5,500-year-old soft-soled plain leather moccasin with laces found in a cave in Armenia is
from a previously unknown culture that flourished with the first farmers. It is 1,000 years older
than the Great Pyramid of Giza. The right shoe — the left has not been discovered — is in
good condition, with no sign of why it was discarded.

Ron Pinhasi, of University College Cork, believes that it may simply have gone out of style.
“In societies that are no longer egalitarian you have the wealthier showing they can afford
things,” he said.

The shoe was preserved by the cool, dry cave and a layer of sheep dung that sealed it from
the air. It was stuffed with grass, probably to maintain its shape, researchers say in the Public
Library of Science One.

It is similar to the pampooties that were worn in parts of Ireland until the 20th century.
ISRAELI STUDENTS TO SEND FLOTILLA TO AID TURKEY'S OPPRESSED KURDS,
ARMENIANS
Asbarez
Monday, June 7th, 2010
TEL AVIV (A.W.)

Israeli students are planning a "peace flotilla" to Turkey with
humanitarian aid for two nations that have suffered under Turkish
imperialism-Kurds and Armenians. The initiative comes in response
to the world's sharp criticism of Israel's lethal raid on the Gaza
flotilla, which left nine activists dead and many wounded, reported
ynetnews.com.

The organizers are currently seeking a suitable vessel and are trying
to recruit other students to the cause. No date has yet been set, but
a skipper has been found: Arik Ofir, a member of the navy veteran's
union and owner of a private business. They have also obtained medical
supplies, and hope that by the end of the week they will be able to
set out.

"The whole world saw the flotilla and thought Israel is a terrible
state, which comes to shoot people who call themselves peace
activists," said chairman of the National Students Union Boaz
Torporovsky, who is also involved. "It's absurd that they always put
the Israeli occupation in the headlines and don't talk about extreme
Islamic terror. There's a lot of hypocrisy in the world.

"Turkey, which leads the campaign against Israel and makes all sorts of
threats, is the same Turkey that carried out a holocaust and murdered
an entire nation of Armenians, and oppresses a minority larger than
the Palestinians-the Kurds-who deserve a state, who have demanded a
state for longer than the state of Israel has existed."

"For this reason," he continued, "we have decided to help that minority
and show up the hypocrisy of the Turkish government. We are sure that
they won't care if we send humanitarian aid. It'll be a peace flotilla
without the knives or stones that hurt IDF soldiers, without violence,
which is intended for all those oppressed by the Turkish government."

"If [Prime Minister Recep Tayyip] Erdogan's heart is where his mouth
is, which we all know isn't so, he has no reason to prevent the
flotilla from arriving."

And what about the practicalities? "For the flotilla to work, we need
three elements: money, logistics and balls," he said. "We're bringing
the balls and some of the logistics, but we need lots of money."

HOW CAN ONE BE PART OF 'ARMENIAN LAND' WHO DOES NOT
SPEAK ARMENIAN?

Re-opening of foreign-language schools in Armenia continues to kick
up emotions.

At a press conference today We are Against Opening Foreign-Language
Schools civil initiative one more time unveiled its concerns over
the issue.

Armen Hovhannisyan, member of the initiative, said they raised the
issue to the prime minister at an IT event held on Sunday, adding
that Tigran Sargsyan could not dispel the worries they had.

"I am familiar with the prime minister's theory of 'Armenian Land'
far long ago. One more time Mr prime minister affirmed that and said
that the 'Armenian Land' is not only in Armenia, and that it is not
only the Armenians that should be part of that 'Armenian Land,' that
is to say, someone, who does not live in Armenia, may become part of
the 'Armenian Land', " Hovhannisyan told Tert.am.

Further he said they are against even the recent amendments introduced
to the draft which propose organizing the teaching process in a
foreign-language as soon as the pupils are in their fifth form.

The reason they are against these amendments is that children will
obtain elementary knowledge in Armenian, but when they are supposed
to start learning more complex things and get familiar with the basis
of science, they are offered to learn it in a foreign language.

"In Armenia education must be in Armenian. This is our requirement,"
said Hovhannisyan.

On June 9, the Armenian National Assembly discussed a package of bills
on introduction of amendments to the RA Laws on Education and
Language. Presenting the legislative initiative of the government,
Armenian Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotyan said that
the amendments are needed for introduction of international programs
in schools and establishment of foreign language schools in Armenia.

According to Ashotyan, education at these schools will start from the
7th class. `In other words, school students will be attending Armenian
schools until the seventh class, after which they will have the
opportunity to enter foreign language schools,' said Ashotyan.

The Minister noted that under the package of bills, the total number
of foreign language schools will make 15. `But these schools will not
be established on the basis of existing educational institutions of
Armenia and will not be financed by the government,' stressed
Ashotyan.
