ARMENIAN INSTITUTE

WORKSHOPS

Saturday, 26 June 2010, 11 am to 2 pm

Brunei Gallery, SOAS, Russell Square WC1H 0XG (Tube: Russell Square)

An array of arts workshops run by artists inspired by the current exhibition at the Brunei Gallery. My Dear Brother: Armenians in Turkey 100 Years Ago, documents social life and landscapes of historic Armenia through postcards while the ground floor exhibition is a moving display of objects from people’s homes from the same era and region.

Participants bring their own personal “ingredients”, we will provide paper, drawing materials, needle and threads, etc.

11.00-13.00 Our first “Scan-athon”! Digital collage/montage: bring along old photographs (landscapes, portraits, social occasions) to scan and use in the creation of new pieces of art. Professional artist, Will Maw is a fine artist who works in collage, printmaking and unique works on paper.

11.00-13.00 Creative fabric: any pieces of fabric, old lace or crochet you have lying around will be re-invented into works of art you are proud to display and use in the contemporary world. Workshop leader Alex Watson is an upholsterer who works exclusively with vintage furniture, re-purposing fine pieces to give them a new lease of life. Alex works with a variety of recycling fabric projects and is prepared to inspire and instruct the adventurous in ways to use the treasures lying in drawers at home.

11.00-13.00 Children's Workshop: Storyteller and artist Taline Haytayan will perform The Talking Fish and then help the audience to become the performers as they create puppets and props and re-tell it themselves. The new version will then be performed for friends and family. Parents are welcome to stay and take part.

12.00- 2:00 Armenian Antiques Roadshow: Bring your household treasures and share stories about your Armenian antiques and perhaps discover more about their origins and uses.
