Dear Friends,

Today marks the 98 anniversary of the beginning of the Armenian Genocide. The government of Turkey's denial of the historical facts about the Armenian Genocide shows its complicity in this crime against humanity started by Turkey's Ottoman predecessors that aimed to annihilate the Armenian nation. Genocide Watch cites denial as the final stage of genocide. We remember the Armenian Genocide to fight Turkey's denial and the open threat it represents. Noted scholar Deborah Lipstadt has written, "denial of genocide strives to reshape history in order to demonize the victims and rehabilitate the perpetrators." We remember the Armenian Genocide to honor its victims and to secure justice for this crime. Philosopher George Santayana wrote, "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." We remember the Armenian Genocide to learn from the past and to prevent future genocides.

On Tuesday, April 23, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution proclaiming April 24, 2013 as "Santa Clara County Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923" during a meeting that opened with the Invocation prayer offered by Rev. Fr. Datev Harutyunian, Parish Priest of the St. Andrew Armenian Apostolic Church in Cupertino. Supervisors Joe Simitian and Dave Cortese presented the resolution, and in his remarks, Supervisor Simitian spoke of the cause, effect and repercussions of the Armenian Genocide. He remembered all those who have been victims of genocide, stressing the importance of "not looking away" when such crimes occur. Raffi Charekian, Parish Council Chairman of the St. Andrew Armenian Apostolic Church accepted the proclamation on behalf of the American Armenian community of Santa Clara County.
