ARMENIAN CHURCH BISHOP SYNOD IN HOLY ETCHMIADZIN
Under the presidency of HH Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians and HH Aram I, Catholicos of the House of Cilicia, 58 bishops from around the world gathered in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, 11-13 November 2014, to participate in the second Bishop Synod of the Armenian Church. A historic and key decision made by the Synod was the confirmation of the canonization of the martyrs of the 1915 Genocide which will take place on April 23, 2015 at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. The Synod adopted a statement, calling on world Christians to join the prayer on the 100th commemoration of the Genocide. The Bishops’ Synod expressed concern over the ongoing conflicts in different parts of the world, especially Syria, Iraq and Ukraine, and criticized the military actions incited by Azerbaijan at the border of Nagorno Karabakh, the most recent demonstration of which was the downing of the Armenian helicopter. Other items on the agenda included the finalisation of new Baptismal service text and the acompaying booklets.

A MAGNIFICENT OPERA GALA AT ST YEGHICHE CHURCH
Excellent performances by jewels of opera singers marked the third annual Opera Gala of the Armenian Church. Last Saturday, 8 November, St Yeghiche Church hosted the Opera Gala with an impressive programme including pieces by Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, Khachaturian, Tigranian & others. The Opera gala, an initiative of Mezzo Soprano Anais Heghoyan, was first held three years ago in celebration of the 1st anniversary of the episcopal ordination of the Primate, HG Bp Vahan Hovhanessian. Since then, the concert has become one of the most anticipated events in the cultural life of the Armenian community. Before the intermission the artists surprised the Primate and all by celebrating the Primate's birthday. The birthday cake was then shared among the audience during intermission. One of the mainstays of the concert is the pianist and composer Arthur Bobikyan from Manchester who, along with famous classical pieces, performed his own music. As the concert was drawing to its end, the church-packing audience demanded encores and the artists presented four more pieces not included in the programme, earning standing ovations.
