Armenian National Committee - SUMGAIT 'Massacres'

Dear Friends,

Please join the San Francisco Bay Area ANC and St. John's Church in honoring the victims of the Sumgait massacre with US Congressional candidate Jackie Speier.

This Sunday, February 24th marks the 20-th anniversary of the anti-Armenian massacre in the Azerbaijani city of Sumgait, where hundreds of Armenians were killed by the marauding Azeri-Turkish mobs. This tragedy laid the grounds for a series of pogroms and the mass exodus of half a million ethnic Armenians from the cities of Azerbaijan, which was followed by the Azeri attack on the Armenian province of Karabakh, and the full scale war of 1991-1994 between Armenia and Azerbaijan. These events are widely commemorated every year in Armenia, Karabakh, and the Armenian communities world-wide.

Armenian-American Jackie Speier is running for US Congress in California's district 12 (covering the southern part of San Francisco and the northern part of the Peninsula) which is home to hundreds of refugees from Azerbaijan and much of the Bay Area Armenian-American community. All community members are encouraged to participate in the memorial dedicated to the victims of the pogroms in Azerbaijan.

The memorial is located at the St. John Armenian Church, 275 Olympia Way, San Francisco.

The schedule of the event on Sunday, February 24th:

10:30-11:20 - Commemorative Church Service

11:20-12:20 - Speech by Jackie Speier and Memorial Ceremony

12:20-1:30 - Reception in the Small Community Hall

1:30-2:30 - Memorial concert in the Main Community Hall
