      According to Jewish author Judith, King Tigran II’s army included chariots and 12,000 cavalrymen.  The Armenian king also had 120,000 infantrymen and 12,000 mounted archers. But the bulk of the army were the foot soldiers. Roman-Jewish historian Josephus talks of 580,000 men in total. As a result, the marching Armenian army was a “huge, irregular force, too many to count, like locusts on the dust of the earth.” The Jewish historians of the time might have been exaggerating the size of the Armenian army because the Hasmonean Jews had lost the war against King Tigran, known as “Medzn” Dikran by Armenians
