House of Commons Debate - 23 March 2015
What follows is a personal view.
Listening in the House of Commons to the David Liddington, the
Minister for Europe, respond with the government's line was a
profoundly depressing experience. Despite two recent visits
to Armenia and laying flowers at the memorial, nothing has
changed in the government's policy even in the centenary year.
The UK will only recognise the genocide if an international court
decides so. It appears theories have to do this.
The only steps that the UK will take is to facilitate people to people
exchanges as a low level, such as journalists visiting each other's
country.
No minister will go to Yerevan on the 24th. The MP chair of the British
Armenian All Party Parliamentary Group will be present but it was
not clear to me if he will represent the government as well as the
group.
Just imagine the scene on the 24th.
The presidents of France, Russia and Poland (and any others I've
not read about yet) in the front row.
Somewhere in the back, a solitary MP with the British ambassador.
This is the way the UK will "endorse the views of the then government"
referring to the Tripartite May 1915 Declaration. There's no substance
behind those regularly repeated Foreign & Commonwealth words.
The different levels of representation will be painfully noticed, and the
UK will suffer reputational damage.

Some literary texts will be presented by Armenian authors killed during
the Genocide (Daniel Varuzhan, Siamanto, Ruben Sevak) or wrote
about the Genocide (Yeghishe Charents, William Saroyan, Paruyr Sevak).
The organizers also proposed “The Book of Whispers” by Romanian-
Armenian author Varujan Vosganian, published in 2009, which has
been translated into numerous languages. Since 2013, it has been
nominated for three times for the Literature Nobel Prize by the
Writers’ Union of Armenia (in 2013 and 2014, it was nominated by
the Writers’ Unions of Romania and Israel, too).
You can find the translated versions (chapters 7 and 8) here
