TOO POOR, TOO BIG, TOO MUSLIM |
Chancellor Merkel's meeting with Prime Minister Erdogan in Ankara on Monday was anything but harmonious. Merkel may have attempted to smile the troubles away, but the rift between Germany and EU-candidate Turkey is growing. Commentators say Germany must finally provide an honest answer to Ankara: Yes or no. Click here for the article |

BULGARIAN PARLIAMENT TO DISCUSS ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RESOLUTION |
Azg Daily, Armenia - By Hovik Afyan - "Azg" daily has already informed that the Bulgarian Parliament will again discuss the resolution on the Armenian Genocide committed in the Ottoman Empire. The discussions are initiated by the Bulgarian Order, Law and Justice Party. The Armenian resolution submitted to the Bulgarian Parliament asserts that "the Genocide committed against Armenians is one of the severest crimes of the modern history; it is a crime against all mankind". The resolution underlines that "the Ottoman Empire worked out and implemented a government initiative to annihilate the Armenian ethnos and expatriate from their historical motherland stretched from Ararat to Anatolia". The resolution asserts that in 1915-1917 the Armenians were severely killed, exiled and plundered by the Ottoman authorities. "The Armenian peaceful population was forcibly exiled, and the authorities took their property. A physical, economic and spiritual genocide was committed against the Armenian ethnos, and as a result about 1,5 million Armenians were killed. Taking into account the above-mentioned, the Bulgarian Parliament recognises the irrefutability of the facts about the Armenian Genocide committed in the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1917 and joins all the international institutions and countries (EC, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Holland and other countries) that have already recognised this fact". At the end, the resolution states that Bulgaria doesn't agree with the Turkish official position that denies the Armenian Genocide. "We call on Turkey to review its position on the real picture of the World War I. We qualify the forcible exile and mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as Genocide. We consider necessary that this document should be compulsory for all state institutions and mass media of Bulgaria. We assume that Bulgarian and Armenian national monuments in Turkey that are a part of the European civilisation need more serious preservation. We demand for taking into consideration the Bulgarian authorities' position during EU-Turkey negotiations - Turkey should recognise the Armenian Genocide in order to be a member of the EU". |
ISRAEL'S KNESSET TO CONSIDER AN ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RESOLUTION NEXT MONTH |
|
armradio.am 27/03/2010 - Next month the leader of Israeli Meretz faction Haim Oron intends to re-table the discussion of Armenian Genocide resolution in the Knesset, IzRus reports. Since the 1990s, the recognition of Armenian Genocide has been a matter of heated discussions. According to the source, this year the issue is in focus of state organizations inside and outside Israel more than ever. For a number of reasons, the issue is no more considered in the context of relations between two states or two nations, but obviously gets geopolitical colouration. Firstly, the process is affected by increasing Israel-Turkey tension. Other regional processes, such as Ankara's shift in foreign policy line, namely change from close ties with West to convergence with Muslim world, Armenia-Turkey reconciliation, strengthening of Armenian-Iranian strategic partnership, as well as intensification of Azerbaijani-Israeli cooperation play role as well. Washington's aspiration to resume Israeli-Palestinian talks by all means urged some officials to recall `Armenian factor' in the context of final determination of Jerusalem final status. The point is Armenian Apostolic Church fully or partially controls many Christian sanctuaries in the city (including part of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher). Besides, Armenian block is located in the heart of Old City, thus western actors of `negotiation process' consider that Jerusalem's future re-division might to some extent depend on stance of Armenians, the source says. |

BRITISH GOVERNMENT SHOULD RECOGNISE THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE |
Baroness Caroline Cox, 23/03/2010 - Baroness Cox writes for ePolitix.com ahead of her oral question on the Armenian Genocide. I am asking HMG whether it will reconsider its position on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide – sadly, without any hope of a change in the British government's consistent policy of refusal to acknowledge the truth. However, the question is timely for three reasons: Read the rest of the article here |

News in Brief by Sevag Devletian |
- The leader of Armenian community in Turkey, who was received by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, described the incidents of 1915 as "mutual affliction of close friends who were made hostile to each other," saying there was no need to rake up the past. Following his meeting with Erdogan in Ankara, Bedros Sirinoglu said, "my grandfather died during the incidents of 1915. But there is no need to rake up the past and call it a genocide."
- Following the lead of the United States and Sweden, a number of European states activated discussions over the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Armenian Genocide resolution is pending to be included in the Serbian parliament agenda. Serbian Radical party (SRS) press secretary Zoran Krasi stated in Belgrade that their party has drafted the motion officially recognizing the massacres in Ottoman Empire in 1915 as Armenian Genocide.
- Turkey is to allow members of its tiny Armenian minority to conduct religious services once a year at an historic church in a gesture of reconciliation, officials said last Thursday. Armenians will be able to hold prayers at the 10th-century church in the eastern Van region in September when they mark their Feast of the Holy Cross, said provincial governor Munir Karaloglun.
- European diplomats in Yerevan presented on Friday details of new, stricter visa rules for citizens of Armenia and other countries planning to travel to the European Union. Under the rules effective from April 5, consular services of EU countries making up the Schengen zone will not consider visa applications from those Armenians whose passports were issued more than ten years ago and/or will expire less than three months after their planned return home. Additionally, Armenians seeking to enter the Schengen zone will have to sign special statements in which they will pledge not to overstay their visas.
- Director General of the Yunus Emre Foundation, Ali Fuat Bilkan, said on Friday, once the protocols signed between Turkey and Armenia went into effect, they desired to open a Yunus Emre Turkish Culture Center in Armenia.

The Cross: Life beyond the comfort zone - Hrayr Jebejian |
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Mark 15:34 These were Jesus Christ’s last words on the cross. His outburst exemplifies the fear, limitedness and fragility of humankind. This very nature of the human being constructs a so called comfort zone where humans feel relaxed and secure. It is perfectly legitimate for a person to look for security which will provide them happiness and contentment. But, is security an adequate platform to build lives on? The so called comfort zone can easily lead to stagnation and self-centredness, rejecting the need for change. “We have always done it this way” becomes a rooted slogan, which hinders efforts for change. The new life contains many obstacles and unknowns, including pain and hardship. It is this same life, though, that will eventually lead to what Paul referred to in 2 Timothy 4:7, “Fighting the good fight”. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the living example of this warrior who fought the good fight. He left his heavenly comfort zone, became flesh and came down to earth. He did so because of His great love for humanity. Jesus Christ’s life on earth is a living example of one who lived life out of the comfort zone. He was born and raised in a poor family. He was a carpenter, a job that requires hard work. He didn’t even have a proper home. He was a lonely person, as He was misunderstood. In spite of all these, He lived His life beyond the comfort zone, preaching and establishing the new life. Jesus went even beyond the comfort zone. He lived the contrast of people who called him “King” and others who called out “Crucify him”. He went through the agony of both and finally burst out, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” (Mark 15:34). This was, indeed, the price of life beyond the comfort zone. Christ’s physical death was just the beginning. It paved the way to His resurrection, victory over death and evil. It was, indeed, the victory of the good fight that created the new life for all. The challenge of our Armenian nation goes far beyond security. It is the building of the new life for the new generation based on our heritage that focuses on our national and Christian identities, a heritage that confronts and navigates through postmodern times and values. The Cross of Jesus Christ paved the way for the new life that goes beyond the comfort zone. It is a life where we need to be prepared to fight the good fight, determined to finish the race and committed to keep the faith (2 Timothy 4:7). Are we willing to go down this road? Krisdos Haryav i merelots. His Resurrection is the power that can help us to live the new life beyond our comfort zone. |
