90th Anniversary News

An evening of Armenian Music, Poetry, Dance & Singing
St. Sarkis Church 90th Anniversary celebrations continued last Saturday, 3 November, with a unique cultural-social evening in the Gulbenkian Hall. The theme of the evening was "Dinner with Poet Lola Koundakjian".  Despite the cancellation of the flight because of hurricane Sandy, Lola Koundakjian joined the gathering live from New York via Skype. She was introduced by Prof. Theo van Lint of Oxford University. The hall was filled to capacity with young professionals and families who sang, danced and recited poetry - along with delicious homemade food and wine.  "Instead of talking about Armenian culture, we lived our culture" explained Hratch Tchilingirian, chairman of the anniversary organising committee and host of the evening.  The previous very successful dinner on 3 October was with Poet Paruyr Sevak.

Anniversary Concert in St. Sarkis Church
Anaïs Heghoyan (mezzo) and Sipan Hakobyan (tenor) presented a special concert on 13 October in celebration of the 90th anniversary of St. Sarkis Church.  This was the first of a series of concerts in St. Sarkis, with an impressive programme of classical composers, included Mozart, Verdi, Komitas, Ganachian, and others. The anniversary committee chairman opened the evening by welcoming Armenia's Ambassador, H. E. Karine Kazinian and introducing Anaïs and Sipan to the packed church.  He said they are not only parishioners of St. Sarkis Church, but are young professional artists with an impressive record of performances.  Anaïs Heghoyan is a graduate of the Royal College of Music’s International Opera School and has performed in many Operas and Oratorios/Concerts.  Span Hakobyan holds a degree in Choir Conducting from Yerevan Komitas State Musical Conservatory and has taken part in concerts in various cities in Armenia, Russia and Europe.   The next concert is on 17 November by Levon Chilingirian and Alexander Chaushian.
