Turkey's Stance `Helps' Armenian Genocide Recognition
Syria -- President Bashar al-Assad meets with his Armenian counterpart
Serzh Sarkisian in Damascus, 22Mar2010

23.03.2010

Turkey's reluctance to unconditionally normalize relations with Armenia
is only facilitating a broader international recognition of the Armenian
genocide, President Serzh Sarkisian suggested in a newspaper interview
published on Tuesday.

Sarkisian spoke to the Syrian daily `Al Watan' during an official visit
to Syria that began on Monday. He was asked, in particular, to comment
on a resolution recognizing the 1915 mass killings of Armenians by
Ottoman Turks as genocide that was adopted by a U.S. congressional
committee on March 4.

`One thing is obvious to me,' he replied. `The longer the process of
normalizing our relations [with Turkey] lasts, the larger the number of
states adopting such resolutions may become.
'

It was a clear reference to Ankara's failure to ratify the
Turkish-Armenian normalization protocols signed in October. Turkish
leaders link the ratification with a resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict that would satisfy Azerbaijan. They also say that the genocide
resolutions adopted by the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee as well
as Sweden's parliament this month have further complicated
Turkish-Armenian reconciliation.

By contrast, Yerevan has welcome both resolutions. `I don't find right
attempts to link that [normalization] process with the recognition of
the Armenian Genocide by other countries,' Sarkisian told `Al Watan.'

Sarkisian, who held talks with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad in
Damascus, is scheduled to visit the northeastern city of Deir ez-Zor on
Wednesday. The eponymous desert surrounding it was the final destination
point of hundreds of thousands of Ottoman Armenians forced out of their
homes in 1915-1918. The Armenian community in Syria built there a
memorial complex dedicated to them in 1990.

Speaking at a joint news conference with Sarkisian on Monday, Assad
offered Syria's help in establishing cordial relations between Armenia
and Turkey for the sake of regional security and stability. `Syria is
ready to play a role... for the establishment of Turkish-Armenian
relations that can ensure normal stability and security in the region,'
he said, according to AFP news agency.

`I think... officials in Armenia have given us their full confidence,
which is why we are starting immediate steps, especially since President
Sarkissian encouraged us' to do so, he said. Assad also praised
Yerevan's decision to normalise its relations with Turkey despite `many
difficulties.'

THE GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT IN THE ARMENIAN-TURKISH PROCESS

Our neighbors have found themselves in a tight corner after
President Serzh Sargsyan's last proposal to sign an agreement on
non-use of force, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee
on Financial-Credit and Budgetary Affairs Gagik Minasyan told a press
conference today.

The MP reminds that the principle of non-use of force is one of the
main points of the Helsinki Final Act, which Azerbaijan has also
signed. The refusal to sign an agreement on non-use of force clearly
demonstrates Azerbaijan's real stance in the negotiation process,
Gagik Minasyan says.

As for the Armenian-Turkish relations, the Republican MP says Armenia
is still winning in the situations. A vivid example of this was the
proposal of an opposition Turkish party to finally discuss the issue
of ratification of the protocols. The Turkish opposition says that
in case the issue is not considered, it will be impossible to prevent
the process of international recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

Gagik Minasyan is confident that the Parliament of Bulgaria will also
adopt a bill on the Armenian Genocide next week. According to the MP,
"the greatest achievement in the Armenian-Turkish process is that
all layers of the Turkish society were informed of their history:
there are no more taboos."
ARMAN KIRAKOSYAN: TURKEY CONTINUES TO BE GUIDED BY
OTTOMAN VALUES

Yerevan (Yerkir) - Speaking about Armenians, who have left for
Turkey, Mr. Erdogan forgets about the millions of Turkish migrants
who make their living in different countries of the world, Armenian
Deputy Foreign Minister Arman Kirakosyan has said when commenting on
Turkish prime minister's statement on intention to deport Armenians
from Turkey.

It's a pity that on the eve of the 95th anniversary of the Armenian
Genocide perpetrated by Ottoman Turkey the authorities of the
contemporary Republic of Turkey continue to be guided by the values
of the Ottoman Empire, not Europe, he added.

I don't think that anyone has forgotten anything, said US Secretary
of State Hillary Clinton in an interview with Vladimir Pozner of
Russia's First Channel, while responding to a question by a viewer
on why President Obama has forgotten about his campaign promise to
recognize the Armenian Genocide and thus, support House Resolution 252.

"I don't think someone forgot something. But what has happened that
is of great import is the work going on between Turkey and Armenia,"
she said.

The US State Secretary recalled that she had been in Zurich last fall
with the foreign ministers of Turkey, Armenia, Russia, France, other
countries to witness the signing of a set of protocols to normalize
relationships between Armenia and Turkey. "In those protocols, there
was an agreement between the two countries to establish a historical
commission that would look at all of the issues that are part of the
past," Secertary Clinton said.

"And I think that's the right way to go, I think, to have the two
countries and the two peoples focusing on this themselves. I have said
many times we cannot change the past we inherit. All we can do is try
to have a better future," Clinton said, adding that the Turkey and
Armenia are currently working to create the commission of historians
