The weekend of 11 to 14 October, His Grace Bishop Vahan Hovhanessian, Primate, led a group of nine young men and women, members of the Armenian Church Youth Fellowship (ACYF) of Great Britain and Ireland, on the first “ACYF Annual Service Project” to the Armenian Monastery of San Lazzaro in Venice, Italy. The Service Project included volunteer work at the musical library of the Monastery, Bible Study sessions, general discussions, participation in the worship and liturgical life of the Monastery and tours of the various historic and cultural sites in Venice. The group, with the Primate and the Very Revd Fr. Garegin Hambartzumyan arrived Marco Polo Airport in Venice late Thursday night, 11th October, 2012. The entire day Friday was spent visiting historical sites in Venice, including the famous Cathedral of St. Mark, and enjoying the fellowship of the members of the group. Early Saturday morning, 13th October, the ACYF volunteers arrived by boat at the Mekhitarist Monastery. Under the supervision of the French-Armenian Maestro Alexandre Siranossian, the 9 ACYF volunteers helped in organizing the large and impressive collection of musical manuscripts, early musical publications, songbooks, disks and CDs of the Monastery’s library. Several of the collections were relocated from a section within the library to another and a list was prepared of the monastery’s collection. That Saturday, the ACYF members were the guests of the Monastery for lunch and dinner at the historic and impressive dining hall. The ACYF members were so inspired by their work and the fellowship at the Monastery that the same evening they offered to help even in the kitchen-work and in cooking! Sunday morning, the volunteers returned to the Monastery to participate in the Divine Liturgy (Badarak) where His Grace Bishop Vahan delivered the sermon. The ACYF group members had the honor of meeting with the General Abbot of the Mekhitarist Monastery, Rt Revd Elia Kilaghbian, who welcomed them to the monastery and expressed his gratitude and appreciation of their work and programme. Fr. Krikor, a monk of the Mekhitarist brotherhood, led the group through an inspiring guided tour of the various facilities of the monastery including its Museum and Manuscript Library. The weekend included recreational activities as well. Following Sunday Badarak the ACYF members were invited to a football match with the seminarians. Also, as an extra bonus, the group was treated to a ride on the historic “Armenia” boat in the vicinities of Venice. The Service Project ended with a fellowship of all involved which included the spontaneous singing of patriotic Armenian songs, enjoying delicious Armenian coffee and more importantly the inspiring fellowship with the monks. The ACYF members returned home inspired and uplifted by their work and the many things they learned about this beautiful Armenian island and monastic community as well as the many nice people they got to meet. For further information about forthcoming ACYF events or future “ACYF Service Projects” E-mail ACYF or check their Facebook. - VideoClip
